Three Things to Know about Rams HC Sean McVay

    Posted 2 hours ago

    Myles Simmons Rams Insider @MylesASimmons

The Rams have a new head coach in former Washington offensive coordinator Sean McVay, the organization announced on Thursday. Here are three things to know about the 23rd full-time head coach in franchise history.

    1) Grew up around the game

The Rams’ head coach is a football lifer, as his grandfather was one of the architects of the 49ers’ championship teams of the 1980s and 1990s.

After coaching the Giants from 1976-1978, John McVay spent 21 years with the 49ers, mainly as the club’s vice president/director of football operations. He was recently inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame for his contributions.

But with the younger McVay born in January 1986, he grew up spending plenty of time around the 49ers organization in its heyday, connecting with legendary players.

“I can remember being around those guys, being around Jeff Garcia and Terrell Owens,” McVay told the MMQB last year. “They were always so great to me. At the time I was so young, you don’t realize what a unique and neat experience it was.”

    2) Groomed by the Grudens

McVay got his NFL start in 2008 as an assistant wide receivers coach for the Buccaneers. At that point, Jon Gruden was Tampa Bay’s head coach. After that season, however, the club parted ways with Gruden, so McVay needed another job. He found it with someone who knew his former boss well, Jon Gruden’s brother, Jay.

McVay became the wide receivers coach and quality control coordinator for the United Football League’s Florida Tuskers, where Jay Gruden was the offensive coordinator. The club went an undefeated 6-0 in their regular season that year.

In 2010, McVay made his way back to the NFL, this time in Washington under head coach Mike Shanahan as the club’s tight ends coach. There he worked with players like tight end Chris Cooley, who raved about his former position coach to ESPN back in 2014.

“He had the highest understanding of an offense of any position coach I’ve ever been around,” Cooley said. “We’d go back and forth in meetings on scheme, why and how. There was always an answer. I love that in a coach. … Two years ago I said if anyone becomes a head coach on this staff it would be Sean McVay.”

That January, McVay was promoted to offensive coordinator under his former boss, Jay Gruden, who had just been hired as Washington’s head coach. Knowing McVay as he does, Gruden gave the 30 year old a nice endorsement at the beginning of the month.

“He’s done a great job and deserves an opportunity to interview, and [we’ll] see what happens,” Gruden said, via CSN Mid-Atlantic. “He’s brought a lot to this football team as far as offensively, and done a good job calling plays, and utilizing the people that we have.”

    3) Helped lead one of NFL’s top offenses, develop Cousins

While Jay Gruden and offensive line coach Bill Callahan have significant input on Washington’s game planning, McVay has been the one to call the plays for the club’s offense for the last two years. In 2016, Washington finished No. 3 in total offense (403.4 yards per game), No. 2 in yards per play (6.40 yards), and No. 2 in passing offense (297.4 yards per game).

McVay has also been instrumental in the development of Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has become one of the NFL’s more accurate passers. In 2015, Cousins led the league completing 69.8 percent of his passes. In 2016 that mark was 67 percent, with Cousins finishing with 4,917 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions at 8.1 yards per attempt.

“I could be here a long time talking about Sean’s help in my development and his ability to call plays for our offense and lead our offense,” Cousins told the MMQB in last summer. “In the 2015 offseason I was coming off a year when I had been benched halfway through and was going into the next year with the chance to really only compete as a backup. I was a little disappointed with that and Sean was a great encourager through that process, challenging me to stay the course. I think his belief in me and his support and his encouragement was what enabled me to eventually have the opportunities that I had.”

McVay’s experience in developing offenses is likely what made him a strong candidate to be the Rams’ coach.

Rams hire Sean McVay as their new head coach

    Gary KleinGary KleinContact Reporter

The Rams on Thursday hired Sean McVay as their head coach.

McVay, 30, was the Washington Redskins’ offensive coordinator for the last three seasons. He becomes the youngest NFL head coach in modern history.

McVay was offered the job after his second interview with the Rams on Wednesday. Owner Stan Kroenke was at the meeting.

McVay initially interviewed last week and reportedly wowed Rams executives before doing the same in an interview with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday.

Though he has no experience as a head coach, McVay fulfills the Rams’ perceived need for an offense-minded coach to fix what has been the NFL’s worst offense for two consecutive seasons.

The Rams were searching for a coach who could nurture quarterback Jared Goff directly or with the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

McVay, who turns 31 this month, is credited with developing Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins, a fourth-round draft pick, into a front-line starter.

Washington ranked third in the NFL in offense this season, averaging 403.4 yards per game. The offense was 12th in scoring, averaging 24.8 points per game.

McVay, who attended college at Miami (Ohio), got his coaching start on Jon Gruden’s staff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is the grandson of John McVay, a former San Francisco 49ers executive who was part of five Super Bowl titles.

McVay was the first assistant to earn a follow-up meeting with the Rams, who had conducted eight known interviews. Houston Texans linebacker coach Mike Vrabel was scheduled for this week.

The Rams also were scheduled to meet with Atlanta offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, architect of the NFL’s highest-scoring offense, after the Falcons’ playoff game Saturday against the Seattle Seahawks in Atlanta.

The Rams have not had a winning season since 2003 and have not made the playoffs since 2004.

They finished 4-12 this season, averaging only 262.7 yards and an NFL-low 14 points per game.

Jeff Fisher, who was hired as coach before the 2012 season, was fired with three games left in this season. Special teams coach John Fassel was interim coach for the final three games.

The Rams interviewed Fassel, Carolina secondary coach Steve Wilks, Arizona offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, New England defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, Buffalo offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn and Jacksonville interim coach Doug Marrone.

Jacksonville hired Marrone on Monday. Vance Joseph, Miami’s defensive coordinator, also was scheduled to interview with the Rams, but the Denver Broncos hired him as head coach Wednesday.

If this guy has 1/2 the success that his grandfather did in building the culture in SF then the Rams will be ok… SF was a mess when his Grandfather took over and changed that organization to a perennial powerhouse…..

Folks always talk about developing a winning culture.. it’s one thing to say it, but you have to be able to do it and implement it… it’s not about strategy, but developing a sustainable culture that breeds winning….

I think this guy can do it…. Is Wade Phillips part of the package?

BTW, his dad was the GM of the local TV Fox affiliate in SF….

Jared Goff was in on the initial McVay interview!

    This is per Mike Silver.

I’m underwhelmed. I agree with zn that we fans are not at all accurate when it comes to predicting how new HC hires will do, but I really was intrigued by Shanahan. It would be unfortunate if the Falcons success combined with bad weather were factors in the Rams missing out on a Shanahan if he turns out to be great. In the meantime I’ll just hope for the best with McVay. I’ll be interested to watch his staff come together.

    This is great.

McVay can coach the Rams for the next 40 years and make Tom Landry look like a temp.

It certainly was a bold hire. What is he, like, 17 or something?

This offseason Should be inter esting.

Lost in all this is the fact that Snead is still the personnel guy.
    Does he deserve to be?

Fine, but how many pillars is he? If it’s four pillars or less then I won’t be happy.

i just think this is a bad hire.

i think this amounts to demoff on a phone call with gruden with gruden telling demoff to hire this kid. and then demoff reading the si article on mcvay.

i don’t think for a second that demoff has any ability to evaluate a coach on his own.

i also worry that they missed out on a real opportunity to evaluate shanahan. but maybe they couldn’t wait. maybe they know something i don’t.

i do think shanahan should have been the first guy they interviewed.

    this hiring is too risky.

Now this makes me feel fucking old. McVay is a year older than my youngest daughter. Given this is still a pretty young team, he should get respect from his peers…the players.

But at least they went offense. Next up, Wade Phillips.

This kind of gives me thoughts about George Armstrong Custer. He was a real prodigy in the US Army back in the day. Kicked some ass and took names for a while. But his game-day decisions cost him in the end.

I just want to point out that Phillips is 40 years older than McVay. I dunno. I’m over 50, and I would have to “get over” being the boss of someone who is old enough to be my father.

Well, Napoleon was a captain by age 20, and a brigadier general by 24.

So my advice to McVay is, don’t invade Russia.

I’ve had bosses that were way younger than me. I have to admit, I watched them closely. Their every move. The “experience” thing weighed heavily on my mind, primarily in how they dealt with their reports. But being the team player that I am, I supported them and never tried to undermine or manipulate them. That said, I didn’t step in when the inevitable mistakes happened. Mostly, it was a flappy mouth.

well. reading about mcvay his strong points include his ability to connect with people. that’s an ability that vermeil excelled at. maybe shanahan is strong in x’s and o’s but not with the ability to form bonds. that’d be huge as a head coach i would think.

that’s also something fisher excelled at. players are fiercely loyal to him. i get that sense with mcvay.
