SIMMONS: “One area for targeted improvement this week is the club’s third-down efficiency. Through two games, the Rams have converted just six of their 27 opportunities”.
—
Rams have been low-ranked in 3rd down efficiency since 2006 when they were 18th.
Though of course if you do the raw “Third Down Conversion Percentage” stat that’s not all passing.
Anyway given that, the highest they have been ranked since 2006 is 24th.
So that’s 4 head coaches (including Haslett) and 7 coordinators.
It;s also a long list of qbs starting with Bulger.
What that stat suggests to me is very simple. It’s an OL issue. Rams have a long series of very injured up OLs from 2007 on.
On third down you need to be able to run with power on short yardage and pass protect when the defense knows you will be passing. With a long series of beaten-up OLs (and now a relatively inexperienced one) they are not good at that. This time, it means they are not good at it yet. As a rule that takes both a qb and a decently coherent, relatively healthy AND at least decently experienced OL.

September 22, 2016 at 1:29 pm #53558wvParticipantWell, i think its mainly the OLine, but i also
think the talent at the TE/WR positions have been mediocre.
Not terrible, but hardly scary to a good nfl defense.
And this year, Keenum is part of the problem. Is he or is he not one of the worst starting QBs in the NFL? Yes. He is.Next year, i assume, a priority will be a talented WR.
Unless Spruce and/or Cooper really become a force.edit: heres the list of starting QBs, btw. Where would we rank Keenum?

Well I think of it this way. He’s not a starting qb. Or, not starting caliber. So to me the question is, is he better than Shaun Hill or Chad Henne? If so by how much?

Yeah, ok. I think he’s a ‘little’ better than Shawn Hill.
At any rate, he’s the best they have right now, at this juncture.
Do you think Goff will start this season?
I do.

vSeptember 22, 2016 at 8:05 pm #53571HerzogParticipantI feel for Mannion. I think he outplayed all other qb’s in the pre-season. And when the starting QB has a horrible game one, he gets demoted through no fault of his.
I think that old phrase “We don’t care where they were drafted” does not apply here

I have thought the same thing, but Mannion played against worse players remember. He has always intrigued me, but mostly because of his numbers in college. I have seen little of him in action. I assume the coaches do not seem his a superior to Keenum.

vYes I think he will play this season.
And to give you the honest truth, though I doubt it happens this year, I cannot wait until he is up and going, confident in the offense and playing as if all the mechanical stuff and head games before the snap stuff were just 2nd nature.
Cause that guy is going to throw some of the prettiest passes we have seen as Rams fans. Even in the preseason, in the midst of the chaos and Deepwater Horizon stuff, he threw 4-5 passes that were just things of beauty.

September 22, 2016 at 10:53 pm #53584InvaderRamModeratori’ve said this before. i’ll say it again. coming out of college, i see more potential in goff than i did in sam. and sam’s turned out to be a pretty good qb!
not only that, i think goff’s supporting cast has more potential than the supporting cast sam took on as a rookie. especially if cooper and spruce are as good as i think they are.
i think he start against buffalo week 5.

I agree with all that.
In Goff we trust.
Hope he doesn’t have a rough start this year, but he looks like the real deal longterm.

September 25, 2016 at 2:50 pm #53814InvaderRamModeratori’m sure this had been posted before but i’ll post it again.
this is from early last year. not sure how goff’s season went after this article.
