I’ve never been a fan of the genre, so it’s pretty unusual for me to watch a supernatural/horror flick, period, much less enjoy it. But I did. It was really, really good.

Surprisingly moving in parts, too. Some truly excellent moments of family interaction/dynamics, weirdly enough, and these were vital to the plot and “organic.” Earned, etc. Shouldn’t have been. But there it was. Though the acting was uneven at times, likely due simply to the subject matter, it had more than its share of strong highlights. Not sure if it won awards, but I’m betting it won a slew.

Haven’t read the novel, but the series apparently veers away from it on most counts. It was more of a riff than an attempt to translate it to the screen. But it works on its own terms, IMO. Ten episodes, and they got better, almost without fail, each time.

I recommend it highly. Though it probably shouldn’t be the last images you choose to see before bedtime. Not for the faint of heart.
