The strength of that seventh round pick almost does make up for the rest of it

If Massey had agreed to wear a glove when he started getting hand issues, I would have argued against trading him to the Giants.

Still, other than that, he was worth the expensive trade up they did to move up and get him in that draft.

I will never forget the coach’s immortal words from that year: “We will stand behind Chris Massey, and snap long hikes to kickers.”

Yeah, the 7th round was never the same after that.

Looking at the old Martz (2000-20005) drafts, makes me appreciate McSnead.

    Their drafting was fantastically terrible.

    The 1970s, though.

    1971
    1 Isiah Robertson
    1 Jack Youngblood
    3 Dave Elmendorf

    1973
    2 Cullen Bryant
    2 Ron Jaworski
    2 Jim Youngblood

    1975
    1 Mike Fanning
    1 Dennis Harrah
    1 Doug France
    2 Monte Jackson
    4 Rod Perry
    7 Pat Haden

    1976
    1 Kevin McLain
    2 Pat Thomas
    3 Jackie Slater
    5 Carl Ekern

    1977
    1 Bob Brudzinski
    2 Nolan Cromwell
    2 Billy Waddy
    3 Ed Fulton
    3 Wendell Tyler
    4 Vince Ferragamo

71 is definitely in the top five Ram drafts of all time, i would think. I cant make it number one, because i know Deacon was drafted in the four hundred and seventy first round in 1961.

Btw, who would you draft first Ohtani or Wembanyama?

The rest of the 71 draft, though, was a whole lotta nuthin. Doesn’t mean it was a bad draft by any means. But the Rams have not always had good hit rates after round 4. Honestly, the Rams don’t start to become great low round drafters until 2022.

From 71 through 79, they had 109 total picks after the 3rd round, and out of that got 8 very good to just good players: Larry Brooks, Cody Jones, Rod Perry, Pat Haden, Carl Ekern, Vince, Reggie Doss, and Drew Hill. That’s a hit rate of just over 7%.

How about the next century? In 2022 through 24, they got 6 very good to just good starters out of 23 picks after round 3: Lake, Kyren, Nacua, Evans, Whittington, and I think also Karty (I don’t blame the blocked kicks on Karty). That’s a hit rate of 26% Which is freaking phenomenal 20.8%, which is quite good.

Plus from 22 to 24 they also got good to decent depth guys like McClendon, Allen, and Davis.

    Had to amend that. 😎

Though it’s not all Karty. He was trying to avoid (ie. kick around) a block on the missed FG. Something is wrong with that unit.
