Stetson Bennett Lets Off Powerful Message In Response to NFL Scout
When thinking about some of the most powerful stories to come out of college football over the years, Stetson Bennett’s journey at Georgia is one of the first to come to mind. A former walk-on turned fourth-round pick in the NFL draft became an inspiration to many during his time in Athens.
Bennett was often commended for his continuous work and dedication, regardless of the circumstances. Not many players sit and wait for their turn to finally come for as long as Bennett did at Georgia, especially with the transfer portal now being a major player in college sports. But Bennett dreamed of playing quarterback at Georgia ever since he was a kid, so he stayed the course and stuck with it through the good and the bad. Even if he didn’t look the part of an SEC quarterback, Bennett never let that stand in his way.
The former Georgia quarterback is now considered one of the greatest players to ever wear the power “G” and is considered by many to be the greatest stories in college football history. Clearly, Bennett knows a thing or two about what it means to relentlessly chase after your dreams, even when the odds are stacked against you. So when NFL scout and Reese’s Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy, fired off a tweet about football being a game that is all about genetics, Bennett had something to say.
Bennett and Nagy have brief history. Bennett passed up on the Senior Bowl, only for Nagy to go on television afterwards calling Bennett a 6th or 7th round player, and mentioning that the only quarterbacks that don’t go to his event are No. 1 picks.
“The only quarterbacks in the last 5 years since I’ve been here that we haven’t gotten in the past were Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence. Those guys were the presumptive No. 1 overall picks,” said Nagy. “We called around before we started to reach out to Stetson’s people, and he was a 6th or 7th-round pick which is a lot better than he was going into the year which was a priority free agent.” Stetson Bennett would go on to be high 4th round selection.
“He never really gave us a reason why not, but I’m assuming with everything going on after the national championship, the highs and the lows and the ultimate low of losing a teammate might have played a part.”
Those that have followed Bennett’s journey in football over the years know that he is not one that often resorts to social media to speak his mind. So when he does, it typically means he has something powerful to say, and the tweet above is a perfect example of that.
A walk-on, a JUCO quarterback, third string on the roster, a player whose team wins in spite of him. Bennett has had a variety of labels slapped on him throughout his collegiate career. Yet today, he holds a roster spot on a professional football team and is one of the most decorated players in Georgia football history. Athletes are often looked up to by their peers, and there are a lot of valuable life lessons to learn from a player like Bennett.
