Matthew Stafford’s new contract details (per @Jason_OTC):• Agreed to a new 2-year, $80M contract in 2025
• New contract has $56M in guarantees
• This is a $26M raise from his prior contract with $17M coming in the first year
• Multiple option bonuses worth up to $24 million in both 2025 and 2026
• Multiple void years for salary cap purposes
• Stafford’s cap number in 2025 decreased by $8.7 million as a result of the new contract…
Me: As of right now there’s contradictory info on this: Stafford’s cap number in 2025 decreased by $8.7 million as a result of the new contract
According to OTC.com, it’s more like 2-something M less against the 2025 cap. But we shall see, we’ll get more consistent info soon enough.

InvaderRamModeratorso. i’m confused. if we’re to believe that post above the rams have 25 million in cap space.
but if we’re to believe otc, it’s only 19 million in cap space?
April 30, 2025 at 6:41 pm #156280
InvaderRamModeratorand then there’s the rookie pool. either way it looks like the rams could make a move possibly? a trade for ramsey? i don’t know how much cap space they’d need to do that though.

From what I could tell, earlier OTC.com has a bigger number (ie. for how much cap space the Rams have after the MS contract). So a buncha tweeters circulated that number. But then apparently OTC.com corrected itself, and at that point (when I posted the above stuff), the OTC.com numbers weren’t being discussed by the twitter.ville types yet.

oh wow. hahahaha. that’s gotta be the biggest gap in the league.
i wonder if a ramsey trade is possible with this amount of cap space.

To be honest? Doubtful. Unless they did it this way—low salary in 2025 with most of the contract in year one going to a signing bonus, so the hit is less this year but goes way up next year.

ZooeyModeratorThat game against the 9ers in the rain where Stafford kinda sucked is the game where his shoulder(?) got banged up, and all the subsequent games were sketchy because of that injury.
But. I think he has a point. And so does Cowherd, even though I didn’t agree with him the first time I saw that bit from him.
You get it while you can. And I even sort of left that door open in my own celebration of the opportunity to draft a QB next year when I acknowledged that they might trade one of those picks this coming season to get a Von Miller/OBJ kind of “put ’em over the top” player.
Ideally, of course, they would win now, and set themselves up for prolonged competitiveness down the road. But like the Rams said, they aren’t going to be able to sign Young, Turner, Fiske, and Verse to second contracts. The NFL is Now. Among all the top sports, the NFL is the one where you have to play like there is no tomorrow. You have 17 games, and a one-and-done playoff format. Every single game matters. All the other sports have the luxury of a longer view.
Cowherd may be right. Get an OT and a CB. That just may be where the Rams find themselves.

znModeratorRams’ Matthew Stafford ‘definitely excited’ to have Davante Adams on board in 2025: ‘He fits right in’
https://www.nfl.com/news/rams-matthew-stafford-definitely-excited-davante-adams-he-fits-right-in
An offseason of change in Los Angeles included the departure of Matthew Stafford’s close friend, Cooper Kupp.
Don’t worry: They still stay in touch. But as the Rams quarterback admitted Wednesday, it has required some adjusting.
“Yeah, I’ve been texting with him some, just checking in on him,” Stafford said of Kupp, now with the rival Seahawks, on NFL Network’s Schedule Release ’25. “He’s a few miles away in a different colored jersey and all that kind of stuff, but when we get to talking and texting it’s the same old stuff, just giving each other a hard time and having fun. I did ask him about this, I was like ‘Am I going to be able to say what’s up to you pregame? What’s the deal?’ He’s like ‘I’m going to give you a big bear hug.’
“So I’m excited. Obviously it’s tough when you’ve played with a guy and had as much success as we’ve had together and then move on, but you play this game long enough you understand it’s part of the business, and I think he gets that too. But at the same time, I’ll be happy to see him. Hopefully he plays great, and we come away with a win. I’m always pulling for him, always pulling for Coop, but always want the Rams to be coming out on top.”
The Rams didn’t simply let Kupp walk without finding a replacement for him, signing Davante Adams to a two-year, $44 million deal that provides Stafford with a fully capable veteran who brings a well-established reputation for being a playmaker. The hope is the two quickly establish a rapport and Adams ends up producing at a rate higher than Kupp did in his final season, in which he effectively disappeared from the offense for stretches.
If Adams can rediscover some of the form that once made him the top receiver in the league, he’ll fit in nicely opposite Puka Nacua. Stafford believes the new partnership will go well.
“Absolutely, he’s been great,” Stafford said. “Obviously played against him in the division [when Stafford was in Detroit], have been a fan of his from afar on the other sideline for a long time, and what he’s been able to do in the league kind of speaks for itself, but then getting to be around him personally every day, working with him, throwing to him, just seeing the kind of professional that he is, he fits right in.
“That’s the kind of guys since I’ve been here in L.A. we’ve had, I’ve been lucky enough to throw to a bunch of guys that take the game seriously, love going out and competing and trying to find a way to get better. He’s no different, and we’re definitely excited to have him and I know for me as a quarterback I feel lucky for all the guys I’ve been able to throw to, and he’s definitely up there.”

DeSean Jackson confirms this about Rams QB Matthew Stafford
Despite the short amount of time playing together, Rams QB Matthew Stafford certainly made a huge impression on DeSean Jackson. How do I know this? When he appeared on the Green Light Podcast with Chris Long, Jackson was asked which NFL quarterback threw the most catchable ball. DeSean Jackson stated with conviction that Matthew Stafford throws the most catchable football in the NFL:

ESPN surveyed league executives, coaches and scouts to help us rank the top 10 players at 11 different positions, from quarterback to cornerback and all positions in between. This was the sixth edition of these rankings, and as usual, several players moved up or fell off last year’s lists.
[me note: the top 5 are Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, Jackson, and Daniels.]
…
6. Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams
Highest ranking: 4 | Lowest ranking: unranked
Age: 37 | Last year’s ranking: 5There’s a reason Stafford garnered significant trade interest when the Rams entertained moving him this offseason — only a few quarterbacks command the position like he does. Players come and go in Los Angeles, but Stafford makes it all work, a truly scheme-transcendent quarterback.
Why does he remain so high in the rankings each year?
“Cause he’s tough as s—,” an NFL coordinator said. “Elite poise and toughness in the pocket. The ability to throw with timing and location while he’s about to get hit in the chin is among the best.”
Stafford seems to manage injuries every year but plays through them … while winning games. The Rams last year became the first team in NFL history to make consecutive playoff appearances after having been three games under .500 earlier in those seasons (1-4 in 2024 and 3-6 in 2023).
Stafford is great in two areas:
After a break: He produced 39 touchdowns to nine interceptions over the balance of the 2023 and 2024 seasons in games that followed the bye week (including playoffs)
And on play-action, producing the third-highest QBR in the NFL off it in 2024 (81.5). His 10 touchdowns to zero interceptions off play-action mark the best performance since Aaron Rodgers in 2021.
Conversely, 17.6% of his throws were considered “off target,” the second-worst such clip among the quarterbacks who received at least one vote.
“A big factor for quarterbacks is what they can do on third-and-10 — Matt scares you more than almost anybody in that situation,” the coordinator said. “And he can make plays off-schedule.”

znModeratorwhat kind of season could stafford have this season? assuming jackson can stay healthy, this is the best group he’s played with since the superbowl?
This could be a better group than the super bowl team.
The super bowl team couldn’t run the ball. They didn’t have Avila or Dotson yet, which means they were still a zone OL. In the game itself they had only Kupp, though I would say that Nacua and Adams come close to being what Kupp and Beckham were before Beckham got hurt.
If Humphries works out–and they gave him a guaranteed contract so it looks like they’re expecting him to work out–then the OL ought to be fine with Humphries playing for a while before Jackson comes back.
I think Stafford can be at least what he was last year.
In terms of the defense, they are a year more experienced plus they added guys. That was a group that was tied for 3rd all time for sacks in the post-season with 16. They are also the only team in NFL history to put up 16 sacks combined in 2 consecutive games.

InvaderRamModeratorguys i’m most interested in watching this year.
1. verse. i know he won rookie of the year but can we expect him to make a significant leap in development. this typically happens in the second third years for d linemen.
2. fiske. see number 1.
3. forbes. cornerbacks are a little worrisome. so if the hype is real with this guy, then he could be one of the two final pieces of the puzzle which brings me to.
4. pooh paul vs dolac. paul jr would seem to be the better prospect since he was actually drafted and he played in the sec, but dolac’s athletic numbers and actual production seem to go be him the edge. i really like dolac, and i’m hoping for the next london fletcher. both have intangibles which are off the charts.
5. ferguson. even if they don’t run more 12 personnel, i’m worried about higbee, and how much he can contribute this year even though he should completely recovered from the acl.
6. josaiah stewart. i really liked this draft. even if he doesn’t start he should be a big contributor.
7. hunter. i really really liked this draft. can we finally get some more explosion in the running game? i still like williams and i’m sure he gets the bulk of the carries. but it’d be cool to see some explosives in the run game.
8. poona ford. i keep reading about what an underrated signing he was, but i’ve never seen him play.
9. adams. the obvious one. high profile signing. maybe the highest profile fa signing this year? he’s gotta be better than the 2024 version of kupp. and like that podcast from another thread states, adams and nacua could compliment each other better than kupp and nacua did. also haven’t seen him play much.
