wvParticipantbill barnwell at espn makes a good case for maye.
basically he says that while the rams had a more difficult schedule, that doesn’t hold true when you focus on just the pass defenses they faced..
it’ll be close.
Yeah, I’ve seen that argument, but to me its not persuasive. I dont even look at just ‘the defense’. For example, Maye played the Browns. The Browns have a good defense. But they are a bad team. And bad teams just make everything easier for quarterbacks, in my opinion. In a lot of little ways.
The Rams played good defenses on good teams. Playing the Seahawks is not the same as playing the Browns. Playing the Texans and Eagles is not the same as playing bad teams with ‘good pass defenses’. The pressure is different, the situations QBs find themselves in are different, etc.

wvParticipantIf it is “that close,” then sentiment will win out. And it probably should. If you can’t really distinguish between the two players this season, then you let the body of work over a career decide. I dunno, but I think Stafford will probably get it. Seems to me he is the Default…
One of the unsolvable problems is — its a stupid award. It just is. Its nebulous. WTF does ‘most valuable’ mean? And how can you compare offensive players and defensive players and different systems, and different schedules, etc etc.
There’s no way to take the silliness out of the award.
I still like it. I dont care. I like the tradition, the history.
Apparently, only QBs or RBs can be ‘most valuable’. If you look at the list of past MVPs its about 90 percent QBs and 9.5 percent RBs.
There is an oddity or two:
1987 L.Taylor
1982 Mark Moseley (Kicker
1971 Alan PageThis was a nice stretch:
1999 – Kurt
2000 – Faulk
2001 – KurtAlso: 1969. Roman Gabriel

Yeah.
It’s the same with all the stale arguments about “greatest ever” in one sport or another. You can’t tell objectively. Across the years, the games’ rules literally change. To say nothing of variables like modern conditioning and medical care, facilities, surrounding talent, coaching advantages, level of competition, intangible influences on teammates and games, and so on. These arguments can be interesting, and even illuminating, but they aren’t definitive.
So give it to Stafford. He’s fucking earned the Honor.

Saturday was Matthew Stafford’s fourth straight road playoff game with 300+ passing yards. That broke a tie with Tom Brady and Drew Brees for the most consecutive such games in NFL history.

Depends on what “greatest” means. He’s the most talented for sure. But it’s still debatable.
Warner took the Rams to two Super Bowls. Stafford has a chance to match that this season.
Gabriel won the most games at 74. Stafford has 52 including playoffs. He would have to play another coupla’ seasons to have a chance to surpass that.

The stats in question, though, were about the postseason only.

InvaderRamModeratorso stafford’s hof score is currently 93.11. which currently puts him at hof level.
first team all pro which he already got puts him at a score of 95.7.
mvp puts him at 105.6.
this is a link that the post refers to.

Ramily,
With all that’s going on I forgot to update on this.
Matthew Stafford was at 87% chance to make the Hall of Fame when the season started. He earns about .20 per game and with his pro bowl (1.5) and (wAV) he moved to 93.11% chance to make the Hall.

Right but I don’t think playoff stats alone are enough to conclude that Stafford is the greatest QB in franchise history.
Postseason stats, regular season stats, wins, losses, clutch performances, game winning drives, TDs, turnovers, etc are all part of the rich tapestry that must be considered before you can anoint a QB “the greatest in franchise history”.

InvaderRamModeratorin regular and postseason stafford is at or near the top in almost every significant passing category only including his numbers as a ram.
if he plays three more productive seasons, he could easily be at the top of all of them.
interestingly. and i’m sure a lot of you already know this. bulger is second in yards and fourth in tds. first in game winning drives.
stafford is fourth in yards and third in tds. second in game winning drives. tied for second in wins.
as already mentioned he is at the top already as far as postseason records go.

InvaderRamModeratorone crazy thing i looked up. stafford is first in passing yards for the lions. if he plays two more seasons in la, he should take the top spot in passing yards for both the rams and lions. i believe no other player had held the top spot in passing yards for two different teams in nfl history either simultaneously or at different times. that’d be crazy. he needs 4352 yards. most likely would need at least two seasons to accomplish that. or could do it with one really good season.
he would need 14 tds to take first in passing tds for the rams. he already is number one for the lions.
he would need 29 more wins to get the most wins for the rams which he already has with the lions. he’d need most likely three more seasons to even have a chance at breaking this record for the rams.
in terms of game winning drives he would need three more with the rams. again he leads the lions in this category.
i believe if he could get all four records in the regular season this would be unprecedented. granted this might also say something about the history of qbs for both teams. but still an impressive achievement.

InvaderRamModeratorWith Matthew Stafford’s 1st-Team All-Pro added:
He is now the 18th highest QB on the Pro Football Hall of Fame monitor at 95.61
Literally every QB ahead is in the HOF or will be inducted when eligible.
If he wins MVP that will put him at 108.

This is absolutely amazing.
Matthew Stafford is also ranked 22nd in approximate value.
That is 22nd out of any player in NFL History.

Since becoming a regular starter in 2011, Matthew Stafford:
1st passing yds (61,714)
2nd passing TD’s (404)
His best throws this year are some of the best throws you will ever see. Period.20 yd completion to Puka. Insane difficulty on this throw. Did it all season. Routinely. Nobody throwing the ball better than Stafford. Nobody. pic.twitter.com/2rgdhPSXCZ
