The New England Patriots are reportedly meeting with veteran free agent running back Steven Jackson on Wednesday according to Ed Werder of ESPN.
The Patriots are clearly exploring every option as they try to find an early-down back to replace LeGarrette Blount, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a hip injury. Per Werder, there is “mutual interest” between Jackson and the Patriots after Jackson played for OC Josh McDaniels during McDaniels’ one season serving as the offensive coordinator with the St. Louis Rams. Jackson is 32 years old and has been completely out of the league after the Atlanta Falcons released him in February. He made it clear then that he was not going to officially retire but would only play again for a contender after spinning his wheels for nine years with a woeful Rams team and two years in Atlanta.
Jackson is known for keeping himself in top physical condition so the idea that he could help the Patriots make another Super Bowl run is not as far-fetched as some might think. At least his legs would be fresh. The Pats’ flirtation with Jackson clearly shows that they are not as confident with Brandon Bolden as their main back as they proclaim.
