People know what the Spags D is, right? It’s the defensive system run by Jim Johnson under Andy Reid for the Eagles from 1999 to 2008. That D was ranked top 10 6 times. Rams fans might remember it from the opening game of the 2001 season when the Eagles beat up Warner all game though the Rams won in OT. Spags was Johnson’s DB coach and then LB coach from 2001-2006. He then took that defense to the Giants from 2007-8. That NYG D under Spags was ranked 5th one year and 7th the next. It was the D that beat the undefeated Patz in super bowl 42.
We know about the Rams. Spags joined the Chiefs in 2019, so this is his 2nd go-around under Reid. In 2023 the Chiefs D was ranked 2nd in yards and 2nd in points.
Spags was a poor head coach but some Rams fans disliked him so much they used to argue he was never a decent coordinator either. This year, it’s his 5th super bowl as a DC.
January 29, 2024 at 5:12 pm #149121znModeratorroberto clemente@rclemente2121the chiefs defense was the most underrated unit in football this season, it finished #2 in offensive points allowed, an eyelash away from #1, and has come up big in the postseason, including holding the ravens #3 scoring offense to just 10 today. tip of the hat to spags.January 29, 2024 at 7:03 pm #149126wvParticipantIts a good matchup. Seems to be a consensus that SF has the most stars of any team in the NFL and maybe the most overall talent player for player.
But the Chiefs have the best defense and the best player on the planet.
Two great coaches.
I have no idea, but i lean toward that KC defense and that Mahomes guy.

Purdy keeps playing like a real QB, but he isn’t Mahomes.
It would be terrible if Purdy ended up being the “next Brady.” A draft afterthought who keeps on winning.
I will be rooting for the KC Chiefs, even though I am tired of them.

better to be lucky than good.. Purdy boy had 2 picks dropped vs GB, one of those should’ve been a pick six. His overthrown ball in the Lions game bounced off a Detroit mask and landed in his receiver’s hands.
When you win games like that, it seems like it’s destiny for him….. Taylor and her Swifities better put a stop to this in Las Vegas.

Yup.
I think i saw that the 49ers were favored by a point or so. I dunno how you make Mahomes, Kelsey and that defense an underdog.

January 30, 2024 at 6:26 pm #149135wvParticipantInteresting take by Baldinger. Sez Purdy throws INTs because Shanahan likes to attack the middle of the field ‘the way Martz did with Kurt’
January 31, 2024 at 1:16 pm #149143wvParticipantTwo centrists discussing maga, taylor swift, the effect of paywalls on news-gathering, Mahomes, Super Bowls, and other matters.
February 3, 2024 at 3:40 pm #149186wvParticipantTravis Kelce was drafted in the 3rd round.
George Kittle in the 5th round. Not bad, eh.
Fred Warner – 3rd round.
Deebo – 2nd round.
Purdy – 7th round
49ers have 8 players on the team who are 1st rounders. (counting the backup QB)
I dunno if that is a lot or about average, or what.
Aiyuk, Armstead, Bosa, McCaffrey, Trent Williams, Kinlaw, Ferrell, Sam Darnold

I thought this was interesting.
My first SB that I remember watching was SBIII. Jets over Colts. I guess, in retrospect, that wasn’t a bad place to start.

I got started in NFL interest later than most. My first super bowl was 13, in 78, Steelers/Cowboys. The game that included the famous Jackie Smith endzone drop. I was pulling for the Steelers (though to this day I feel bad for Smith).

Super Bowl 5. Colts vs Cowboys with O’Brien’s game winning FG.
BTW, NFL Network replayed 30 min NFL Film highlights of each Super Bowl this past weekend. I binged SB 3 through SB 9, then binged SB 50 through 56.
When I grow up, i want to work for NFL Films.
February 5, 2024 at 2:02 pm #149223wvParticipantHeard a snippet on the radio, i thot was funny. Some Raider official was talking about how this super bowl is a nightmare for the Raiders. The Raiders absolutely hate two teams: Chiefs, San Francisco.

Roger Goodell said at his press conference today that the league sent experts out to UNLV, and declared the fields “playable” despite the Niners’ protestations. https://t.co/xIp6KXaFtk

February 7, 2024 at 9:45 pm #149262ZooeyModeratorI will win $255 if the 49ers win, and lose $100 if they lose. Bets I placed while in Vegas.
I hope they lose.
And I’m never betting on football again for the same reason I don’t play fantasy football anymore.
I have my loyalties, and I don’t like these outside forces affecting that.
Fuck the money.

February 8, 2024 at 2:11 pm #149280wvParticipantSome of us would like to see Shanahan suffer another post-season meltdown. SF blew the ten point lead against the Rams in the NFC title game. They blew a ten point lead to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. And of course the Falcons blew the 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl.
I would like to see SF blow a 31 point lead in this game.
Does that make me a bad person?

February 9, 2024 at 1:20 am #149295znModeratorAnother max blitz in the Red Zone by the Chiefs vs. the Vikings.
The 49ers offense is hard to pressure on early downs because of the movement & run game.
Getting SF into passing situations will be critical for KC, because that opens up Spags ability to use pressure.#ArtofX pic.twitter.com/MzQ5htfUtz

February 9, 2024 at 3:12 am #149301znModeratorThe @Chiefs use more three-tight end sets than any other team, and equally in the run and pass games. The @49ers haven't defended 13 personnel well this season, and Matt Nagy said something to me about 13 that could be big in Super Bowl LVIII. @gregcosell and I get into it. pic.twitter.com/aGFDO2d5Dc

February 9, 2024 at 10:01 pm #149310ZooeyModerator49erland is confident.
My sportsradio attention is pretty limited, but from what I gather, all the local talkers think the 9ers have this. I do not sense Homerism as a factor. They talk like we talked in 99.
You know the whole, “Rams haven’t played anybody yet” thing that we endured all year long? These guys have a bit of that. Especially when it comes to Brock Purdy. They have watched every game he has ever played, and they aren’t having any of the “Purdy is a system guy” bullshit. There isn’t even any debate about it, afaik, within the ranks of the sports talkers. There aren’t any skeptics. Across the board, 9er-watchers believe Purdy is Legit.
If JoeMad is around, I’d love to hear what he’s hearing. He’s also a Bay Area NoCal guy, and Ozone. I dunno if they watch/listen to anything, but that’s my 2 cents from where I’m standing.
