    What Cardinals Fans Are Saying

    ————-

I’m a glutton for punishment. Go cards
    ————–
I hope the Cardinals win, but… The more likely outcome is we get destroyed and Bradford gets both his legs broken off.
    ———–
watching the raiders/rams…gruden has a perfect gameplan for rams d…tough runs, quick passes-crossing routes to te and a couple of deep shots-to me sounds kinda like what we thought cards were gonna do on offense..

this is how cards beat rams

    -ol must play great

-McCoy must have larry and rsj run crossers and seam routes

-there must be some 50/50 balls thrown larrys way

-dj and Edmunds have to get some short passes but dj should run some of the deeper wheel routes that he excels at

-dl has got to play their gaps and Reddick and buc must do a better job at outside containment

-its time for some exotic blitzes-cj cant do it all

    -dbs have gotta tackle

-pp should be able to handle brandin cook so other dbs have to handle rush and woods

-special teams must produce 2 big plays

    -must win turnover battle

-hopefully cards feel angry and embarrassed and will play with a mean^%$S attitude

-imho cards should take ball if they win toss…falling behind will spell disaster
    ————-
They are bringing in linebackers and tight ends in for workouts. I wonder who. Hmmmmn I hope it’s bowman
    ————
Wilks’ losing to the Ramz and going 0-2 to start the 2018 season doesn’t have to happen. But….over 80% of the Vegas money says he will lose.
    ————-
It’s time for us to go back to a 3/4 and man press coverage. CJ and PP won’t look absolutely lost. Get Rosen his first start and figure out a way to get the ball down the field. If you have to split DJ out wide and get Nelson on the field do it.

It’s time to stop making it easy on the opposition. Bradford will retire both LF and DJ if given a chance. We have to make the Rams cover more room and we have to allow CJ to get off the ball and rush Goff.

Our OL doesn’t completely suck. Rosen is the franchise. Get him in until he proves he’s not ready. Everyone knows Bradford isn’t the answer including the players, the organization and now the fans. This franchise needs a straight out bolt of electricity rammed right up their collective butts. Wilks can either define himself as a company man and loser or he can look at the tape and make the adjustments needed to try and turn this sinking ship around.

Anyone thinking this team is beating the Rams dinking and dunking the ball down the field with Bradford and without CJ having a monster game is out of their minds.
    ————–
That Rams pass rush will be too much. Carr wasnt getting any time in the pocket so you damn well know they will be up in Bradfords grill. Cole is gonna have his hands full with Donald. Pray Bradford’s legs dont fall off this Sunday.
    ————–

Sunday’s game between the Cards and Rams will look like a fight between an 8th grader and a 3rd grader.

I honestly will be shocked if midway through the 3rd the Card faithful have all turned the slaughter off.

Wilks quote of the day, ‘guys were trying to do too much.’ Yea not the total ineptitude of the coaching staff to call plays that might actually work.

The only hope the Cards got is the Rams are tired from the MNF game.
    ————-
Donald and Suh may hasten the Rosen era.
    ———-
We will learn all we need to know about the 2018 Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. I’m not gonna lie. I already have this as an L, but what I need to see is some damn pride and fight out of the team.

This season’s not over, but if they play like they played on Sunday, we know to cool any talk of playoffs, and a surprise run at a chip. (see Philadelphia eagles) Everyone expects us to get mopped, but prepraration and pride make a huge difference. Ask the Bucs.
    ———–
As of right now, Ryan Fitz-Magic > Sam Boring-ford.
    ———–
100% agree! If Sam and Co don’t show any movement Sunday vs the Rams….which is a tall order….It’s time to cut bait and see what the future holds. Worst case we give Sam through the Bears game…if they’re 0-3….call it quits then and it’s Rosen time.

I’d be interested to see the odds on the Rams game….guessing Rams +13, but I’d put it at Rams +20.

Cardinals are gonna need to find a lamp that offers three wishes to change this season around.
    ———–
opening line on cbs sports is 10… seems low to me
    ———–
Rams by 14 at Yahoo. Not sure where they get their line. WOW. 2-touchdown NFL lines are rare nowadays, usually involving somebody like Cleveland.
    ———–
Worst thing is I’m going to have to watch the game with my Rams fan buddy I grew up with that I see basically twice a year to watch the games. He’ll be calling soon. He’s alot easier to get a hold of now that the shoe has switched feet.
    ———–

I will watch the Rams game and see if we should start praying now
    ———–
I am seeing a blueprint for playing these guys:
run-heavy schemes to take Donald and Suh off the game they want and play best.

Of course, having a great OL to grade the road and two powerful backs does help.

But PI killing the Raiders so far. Curse that spot-of-foul! Lousy calls too.
    ————–
Watching the raiders and rams offense
Makes me sad. I don’t think i saw one creative offensive play by McCoy and Bradford. I hope the cards offensive coaching staff are watching these games and taking notes
    ————-
Frosty Rucker is getting mauled by the Rams
    ————-
I noticed that the Ram’s repeat the same play over and over.
Wilks needs to watch the tape.
    ————-
Well. Time to skip this Sunday.
They are going to get demolished.
    ————-
I didn’t think the Rams looked all that
It was a tied game until the last second of Q3.

They looked weak at LB, and at the Edge. They couldn’t cover TE. A bit like us on Sunday but not as awful.
    ————
Rams were just slow out of the gate due to resting their starters most of preseason
They throttled Oakland in the 2nd half. Raiders had something like 17 total yards in the 3rd quarter. Too much talent on the Rams. I don’t see another team winning the division.
    ———-
They throttled them in Q3 as well, Oakland had 17 total yards and the Rams outscored them 10-0. Yeah the Rams have some weaknesses but the same can be said about any team. I still see the Rams winning at least 10 games and the division. I don’t think the division runner-up will have more than 8 wins.

The Cardinals were already without A.Q. Shipley (for the season) and therefore starting a rookie center against the #LARams. Now, they’ll be without starting RT Andre Smith who will miss Sunday with an elbow. #ARIvsLA

    from PFF: https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-pff-press-pass-nfl-previews-for-every-matchup-during-week-2

ARIZONA CARDINALS @ LOS ANGELES RAMS

Plenty of targets for David Johnson

In their first game of the season against Washington, the Cardinals targeted running back David Johnson eight times. The Cardinals would be wise to increase Johnson’s targets against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2, as the Rams allowed the Raiders running backs to catch 13 of their 15 targets on Monday night. Johnson last faced the Rams in the season finale in 2016 and earned his second highest receiving grade ever in the NFL (90.7) and his highest graded game overall (80.0).

    Rams wide receiver distribution

Rams’ quarterback Jared Goff has three excellent wide receivers to throw to in Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and newly acquired Brandin Cooks. Cooks is among the league’s top deep threats and while it did not show up in the box score, Cooks’ presence was felt on offense as he racked up 87 receiving yards in Week 1. Woods often lines up on the outside opposite of Cooks, and he is also a reliable downfield threat as he drew three targets on passes of 20 or more yards downfield last week. Kupp is known for his ability in the slot and was able to haul in five catches for 52 receiving yards and a touchdown from the slot in Week 1. Goff had a near even target distribution last week as Cooks saw eight targets, while Woods and Kupp both had nine. It will be interesting to see if the even distribution trend continues against the Cardinals, due to the fact that the Rams will be going up against all-pro cornerback Patrick Peterson.

Injury Report 9/14: Barron Listed as Doubtful, Thomas Declared Out for Sunday

    Myles Simmons

    https://www.therams.com/news/injury-report-9-14-barron-listed-as-doubtful-thomas-declared-out-for-sunday

The Rams appear likely to be without inside linebacker Mark Barron once again for Sunday’s contest against the Cardinals, as he did not practice on Friday and is officially listed as doubtful for the contest.
Barron (ankle) has been dealing with an achilles issue dating back to the end of the 2017 season. Though Los Angeles had Barron on a regimented program to bring him along slowly until the regular season began, Barron’s achilles has been painful enough to hold him out of practice for each of the last two weeks.

“There’s not a tougher person than Mark Barron,” McVay said last week. “So, you know if he’s not able to go, then it’s bothering him.”
Barron was No. 2 on the team with 108 total tackles last season, also recording four tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, three quarterback hits, seven pass breakups, and three interceptions.
Last week, inside linebacker Ramik Wilson and safety Marqui Christian split time in Barron’s stead. Wilson played more on early downs and Christian in more known-passing situations.
Also on the injury report for Los Angeles, wide receiver Mike Thomas (hip) has been listed as out. McVay said earlier in the week that Thomas would likely miss a few weeks with a groin injury, which was part of the reason why L.A. re-signed wide receiver JoJo Natson to be the club’s returner in Pharoh Cooper’s stead. Cooper — an All-Pro returner last year — was placed on injured reserve earlier this week after suffering an ankle injury that required surgery, and Thomas was his backup.
“Mike’s going to be out. He had to, actually, have a procedure on his groin, unfortunately — get that thing fixed up,” McVay said Friday. “So, he’s going to be out for some time right now.”
Below is the full injury status report for both teams.

    ARIZONA CARDINALS
    OUT
    OL Andrew Smith (elbow)
    DT Olsen Pierre (toe)
    QUESTIONABLE
    DE Markus Golden (knee)
    TE Jermaine Gresham (achilles)
    LB Haason Reddick (ankle)

    LOS ANGELES RAMS

Arizona Cardinals at Los Angeles Rams: Scouting report, prediction

    Arizona Republic

    https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/nfl/cardinals/2018/09/14/arizona-cardinals-los-angeles-rams-scouting-report-predictions/1295334002/

    Who has the edge?

    Cardinals on offense

Coach Steve Wilks and quarterback Sam Bradford each said the Cardinals must do a better job of getting more out of their wide receivers involved in passing situations. Rookie Christian Kirk was the only wide receiver other than Larry Fitzgerald to catch a pass in last week’s season-opening loss to Washington, and he only caught one for four yards. The receivers could have a problem getting open against the Rams’ secondary, specifically their two talented cornerbacks, Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters. That’s not the only place where the Cardinals could run into trouble. The Rams’ defense starts up front with three tremendous disruptors in Michael Brockers, Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh. As one member of the Cardinals’ offensive line said, those three aren’t elite pass rushers, but they do cause confusion, clog up the middle and make you double-team them. That might make it difficult for running backs David Johnson and Chase Edmonds. They may have to get more outside looks to be effective if the offensive line can’t get a push against the Rams’ defensive front. However they decide to attack, the play-calling on offense has to be a little more adventurous and far less predictable. Getting veteran tight end Jermaine Gresham back from an Achilles’ injury will help, if he’s able to play. The Cardinals also weren’t sure about the status of starting right tackle Andre Smith, who’s dealing with a sore elbow.

    Edge: Rams

    Cardinals on defense

Coordinator Al Holcomb has to make stopping running back Todd Gurley priority No. 1 and then bring whatever he has left to try and knock quarterback Jared Goff around and make him uncomfortable in the pocket. That’s probably easier said than done, but it’s the only way the Cardinals will avoid falling to 0-2. Any chance at all of an Arizona victory will depend on being able to slow down the Rams’ offense. They’ve silenced Gurley before, but he’s playing at an incredibly high level and has the blockers in front of him to open holes and allow him to get some separation and speed. The Cardinals’ defensive line has to be better than it was last week against Washington. Ditto with the linebackers. Neither unit tackled very well. Chandler Jones needs to have an outstanding game at both rushing the passer and sealing the edge against the run. Deone Bucannon, meanwhile, needs a bounce-back game in the biggest of ways. As for the secondary, they’ll have their hands full with covering receivers Brandin Cooks, Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods. This is a game where the Cardinals likely are going to have to force a few turnovers to help them win, so keep an eye on cornerback Patrick Peterson and safeties Budda Baker, Tre Boston and Antoine Bethea.

    Edge: Rams

More: Larry Fitzgerald, Mike McCoy, Al Holcomb know about resilience

    Special teams

One of the lone bright spots from last week’s game was punter Andy Lee, who had a 52.6-yard average on five kicks and downed three of them inside the 20-yard line. For the Cardinals to have any chance on Sunday, Lee will need another strong game, kicker Phil Dawson will have to be near-perfect and returners Kirk, T.J. Logan and J.J. Nelson must help flip field position with some hefty returns. The Rams have two of the best legs in the business in punter Johnny Hekker, who posted the third-best net average (44.3) in NFL history last season, and kicker Greg Zuerlein, who was 38 of 40 a year ago on field-goal attempts before landing on injured reserve. The bad news for the Rams is their primary returner, Pharoh Cooper, just landed on IR with an ankle injury. But Kupp and Michael Thomas are very capable replacements.

    Edge: Rams

    Bottom line

Add it all up and this one just smells like a loss for the Cardinals. They’d have to really buckle down on defense in all three areas, show some creativity and splash-play ability on offense, and definitely win the turnover battle to have any shot at all against a very good Rams team that is the favorite to win the NFC West for a second straight year. Could they pull off an upset? Certainly, but only if last week’s season-opening loss was a fluke and not an accurate portrayal of what kind of team they really are in 2018. Until they prove otherwise, I’m guessing it’s the latter.

    Prediction: Rams 30, Cardinals 17

Arizona Cardinals injury report: Andre Smith injury forces change on offensive line

    https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/nfl/cardinals/2018/09/14/arizona-cardinals-injury-report-andre-smith-john-wetzel-los-angeles-rams/1307094002/

Andre Smith has been ruled out of Sunday’s game at the Rams because of continued elbow soreness, meaning John Wetzel will get the start for the Cardinals at right tackle.

Wetzel has started 19 games the past two seasons, mostly at left tackle, and will have to play one of his best games as a pro if the Cardinals hope to contain the Rams’ ferocious defensive front of Michael Brockers, Ndamukong Suh and Aaron Donald.

“I feel great about Wetzel,” coach Steve Wilks said. “He had a pretty good camp, done some great things and has also played a lot of football for us around here so I’m very excited about him being in there. Again, those guys are going to work well together and I think we’re going to do a great job on Sunday.”

Smith’s injury isn’t considered to be too serious, Wilks said, adding the lineman likely will be available next week against the Bears.

The only other played ruled out against the Rams is backup defensive tackle Olsen Pierre (toe). Three players are listed as questionable for the Cardinals – defensive end Markus Golden (knee), tight end Jermaine Gresham (Achilles’) and linebacker Haason Reddick (ankle).

Wilks said Golden has had a great week of practice and that there’s a chance he could play.

“I think he can give us a spark,” Wilks said. “We’ve got to be smart and limit his reps, put him in situations where he can be effective. Will that be on third down trying to rush the passer? Those are things to think about, but again, he’s a lot like Jermaine that brings a lot of energy, communicates well, guys feed off of him, so he’ll bring a lot to us.”

MORE: Arizona Cardinals podcast: Bad Week 1, or just a bad team?

Running back David Johnson was limited earlier in the week with a back issue, but he said Friday he’s good to go after being a full participant in practice each of the past two days.

“The back is good,” he said. “I’m 100 percent and I’m ready to go for sure.”

For the Rams, wide receiver Michael Thomas (hip) will not play Sunday and linebacker Mark Barron (ankle) is listed as questionable.

Former Teammates to Face Bradford for First Time

    Myles Simmons

    https://www.therams.com/news/former-teammates-to-face-bradford-for-first-time

With how fast the NFL moves, it feels like an eternity ago. But there was a time in the recent past that Sam Bradford played quarterback for the Rams.
Back in 2010, the franchise drafted Bradford No. 1 overall out of Oklahoma — one selection before now-Ram Ndamukong Suh. Bradford compiled a 18-30-1 record as a starter with the franchise, but his tenure was certainly marred by injury.
In 2013, Bradford suffered an ACL tear against the Panthers in the Rams’ seventh game of the season. Then after working his way back, Bradford suffered another ACL tear during the team’s third preseason matchup against Cleveland in 2014.

That would be the last snap Bradford would take in a Rams uniform, as the club traded him to Philadelphia in March of 2015.
There are few players left in the organization who lined up with Bradford, which is part of why he said this week that there isn’t much emotion for him in terms of playing the franchise for the first time.
“If it would’ve happened sooner, maybe there would be more,” Bradford said this week, via azcardinals.com. “There’s just not a lot of connection that’s still there for me.”
It’s true — the franchise isn’t even in the same city where Bradford played, having relocated back to L.A. in 2016. And aside from Los Angeles’ special teams group of kicker Greg Zuerlein, punter Johnny Hekker, and long snapper Jake McQuaide, only offensive lineman Rodger Saffold and defensive lineman Michael Brockers played a regular-season game with Bradford.
In fact, Saffold came in the league with Bradford back in 2010 as the No. 33 overall pick. Because of that, Saffold agreed that it’s going to be a bit weird to see him on the opposite sideline.

“It happens, but I think this is maybe only the second meeting that I’ve had where Bradford was on the other team — whether he was injured or just with a different team,” Saffold said, referring to the Bradford being on the Vikings last season when Los Angeles visited Minnesota. “But I came here with him, so it is kind of crazy.”
Drafted in 2012, Brockers played with Bradford for 23 regular-season games. But he has plenty of memories of Bradford from the locker room.
“That’s my guy. We used to play card games, be in here playing Tonk and stuff — he owes me some money, so maybe I’ll hit him up,” Brockers said with a laugh. “But for the most part we’re just going to focus on the game plan and execute.
“Hopefully it just makes the game fun, you know?” Brockers added. “Maybe I can get back there and talk a little crap — get in his head a little bit. But for the most part, it’s going to be fun.”
While quarterback Jared Goff and Bradford are linked on paper by their draft status as two of the franchise’s No. 1 overall picks, Goff said this week that he and Bradford have never met. But the Cal product has long admired Bradford from afar.

“He’s a great player, I think he’s tremendous. I think he does a great job,” Goff said. “I have followed his career just through being a fan and being a fellow quarterback, and I think he’s a great player. The guy that our defense is definitely getting ready for and really preparing for as good as he can be.”
Defensive tackle Aaron Donald was only a rookie when Bradford suffered his second ACL tear in that preseason matchup with Cleveland, but he knows how effective the quarterback can be.
“He’s a good quarterback. If we don’t get to him and he’s back there comfortable, then it’ll be a long day for us,” Donald said. “Our job up front is to get him on the ground and get some hits on him and try to make him uncomfortable back there.”
