When quarterback Matthew Stafford decided to stick with the Rams, the Raiders were SOL when it came to their quarterback situation.
Now, they’re apparently S-in-L.
The Seahawks will be trading quarterback Geno Smith to the Raiders, according to NFL Network. In return, the Raiders will send a 2025 third-round pick to Seattle.
There had been some chatter regarding former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll angling for Geno, but the Seahawks had been saying all the right things about Smith. Last week on PFT Live, both G.M. John Schneider and coach Mike Macdonald sang Geno’s praises. I specifically asked Schneider if there’s “any doubt” Geno is the guy. Said Schneider, “No. . . . I don’t foresee him not being with us.”
Macdonald has repeatedly said that Geno is their guy, at one point declaring that the team can win a championship with the 2013 second-round pick from West Virginia.
Hell, new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak said Geno was a “huge draw” to Seattle.
Now, Smith is gone. We’ll be digging into the various angles and ramifications on this one throughout the night. First, it’s time to attach the toupee for an emergency edition of #PFTPM.

Starting a new thread is no big deal. In this case I am just going to change the title.

Back story: Seahawks were working to extend Geno Smith’s contract over the past week. When progress was not being made, the Raiders stepped in and showed interest in acquiring Smith. With Seattle struggling to get a new deal done with Smith, they opted for the third-round pick instead.Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
Along with the likely scenario the Seahawks will sign Sam Darnold at QB, there’s some optimism this could alter the conversation with receiver DK Metcalf, who has requested a trade.March 8, 2025 at 12:52 pm #155349canadaram
ParticipantIf the rumours about the Seahawks wanting Maxx Crosby are true, I wonder if they will sign Darnold and then make a play for Hendrickson?

Sources: The #Seahawks, after trading Geno Smith to the #Raiders, have shifted their primary focus to Sam Darnold. He is their No. 1 option, and there is mutual interest on his behalf as well.It is highly unlikely that Darnold returns to the #Vikings, according to multiple sources.
The #Seahawks got a prime look at Sam Darnold in Week 16, when he threw 3 TDs (0 INTs), while leading a game-winning #Vikings’ drive that culminated in a 39-yard TD pass to Justin Jefferson.
Seattle has contingency plans at QB, but Darnold is their top choice.
Ed Werder@WerderEdNFL
I still recall a conversation with Pete Carroll in 2023 when he shared his opinion that Geno Smith throws it as well as anyone in football. Now reunited as Raiders following last night’s trade.
…
Me (at moi.com): Picking up on what Werder says in that tweet, what I don’t see mentioned enough in this whole discussion nationally about Smith and Seattle and LV is that Smith signed with Seattle under Pete Carroll, and Carroll had him for 4 years. Carroll went 12-4 in 2020 with Smith.

Moderator$40 million/year.
With Myles Garrett locking in at $40M per year, this ups the ante for the next “highest-paid non-QB.” Good news for Ja’Marr Chase, Micah Parsons and others.

ModeratorThe other shoe:
The rumblings coming out of the Geno Smith trade look to indeed have produced a deal. Sam Darnold is expected to head to Seattle as the team’s first outside QB1 addition since Russell Wilson 13 years ago.Darnold and the #Seahawks are finalizing a deal worth nearly $100MM, #NFL.com’s Ian…

So, the 49ers:• Traded Deebo Samuel (Commanders), and released Kyle Juszczyk
• Lost the following in Free Agency: Aaron Banks (Packers), Charvarius Ward (Colts), Talanoa Hufanga (Broncos), Dre Greenlaw (Broncos), Jaylon Moore (Chiefs), Elijah Mitchell (Chiefs), Josh Dobbs (Patriots)Must suck to start a rebuild without a ring to look back on…

It’s kind of sad. I hope for the 49ers’ sake that at least they over-commit and overpay Brock Purdy, and he turns into David Carr.

McVay has a real chance to sweep Shannahan again.
I am in favor of that.

vJust think: if McCaffrey continues to age disgracefully, and Kittle gets old, and Aiyuk gets zero votes for Comeback Player of the Year, then Purdy is going to look very pedestrian, and Shanahan will find his seat warming up.

Oh, boy.
Leonard Floyd just left the 49ers for the Falcons. Looks like a rebuild, and looks like they will be building around Brock Purdy.
