now i’m not trying to say that watkins will be as good as jones. but i thought it’d interesting to compare the two because jones had faced some injury woes at the beginning of his career before he really got going.

    julio jones’ first three seasons
    2011 – 13 games 54 rec 959 yards 8 tds 6 ru 56 yards
    2012 – 16 games 79 rec 1198 yards 10 tds 6 ru 30 yards
    2013 – 5 games 41 rec 580 yards 2 tds 1 ru 7 yards
    total – 34 games 174 rec 2737 yards 20 tds 13 ru 93 yards

    sammy watkins
    2014 – 16 games 65 rec 982 yards 6 tds 2 ru 8 yards
    2015 – 13 games 60 rec 1047 yards 9 tds 1 ry 1 yard
    2016 – 8 games 28 rec 430 yards 2 tds
    total – 37 games 153 rec 2459 yards 17 tds 3 ru 9 yards

in the three seasons since, jones has been dominant. and let me also say he’s had stability which watkins has not enjoyed his first three seasons. jones has had matt ryan, who’s been anywhere from good to great, as his qb his entire career. watkins also played in a very run-heavy offense for most of his career.

again. this is not to say that he can reach jones’ level. it’s just to say that his career trajectory is not set in stone. he’s young with potential. the second half of his 2015 season was dominant. like dominant. and then the next season he had the foot injury. much like jones missed significant time his third season with a similar foot injury.

i should also add that jones’ stats in 2013 came before the surgery.

watkins’ stats in 2016 came AFTER the surgery. i think that makes a little bit of difference.

i also want to clarify one thing about watkins’ injury history. i just read on turf show times. there was some bit about watkins’ having “season ending injury after season ending injury”.

let me clarify. he’s NEVER had a season ending injury.

his rookie year he played all 16 games. his second year. he had some injuries at the beginning involving the calf and ankle. and he had a little bit of a meltdown on the internet. but he recovered. and he finished strong that season. he was dominant. then before his third season even started, he broke a bone in his foot. had surgery. tried to come back. had a setback and was placed on injured reserve. but he came back to finish the season. he’s finished ALL THREE SEASONS he’s played. i think that’s important to note.

I like what you are thinking here.

That was some quality work on your part. Thanks for doing that.

Yeah, this trade was not on anybody’s radar. If the Rams and Bills have talked about it since May, they both did a great job of keeping a lid on it.

I badly wanted Watkins in 2014. It strikes me as kinda funny that Robinson is gone, and they have Watkins now.

I don’t think he’s Beckham, either. Or even Jones. But if he is in that next level of players, that’s good enough for me.

i agree he’s one tier below. but laram from the herd had this to say. i almost never see him be this effusive.

He wants the ball…he expects the ball…because he’s a playmaker!

Don’t watch him against scrubs like Sean Smith.

Go watch him retire Darrell Revis.

I sat there and watched a corner who I admired above all, who was as fundamentally sound as anyone get completely dismantled.

If Sammy can stay healthy dare I say he could surpass Ike in Rams lore.

    He’s that good!
