I was wrong. I was pretty happy when the Rams picked up Watkins. For years, the Rams lacked a #1 WR, and the year he was drafted, he was the consensus best WR, and considered a #1. I excused his slow start with the Rams because he didn’t have camp.

But he never really took over. He made some very good plays, and had some highlights, but he was also invisible much of the time. Still…I hoped the Rams would keep him, and a year in camp would make the difference.

Well, they let him go, and got Cooks.

I was…”Who?” I remember a couple plays he made in the Super Bowl before getting hurt, but I’m not sure I had heard of him before. McVay was high on him, so I was like…”Okay. McVay knows what he’s doing, and he may be a better scheme fit, so fine.”

So far…the guy has proven to be worth every penny of his extension, and looks to be a great add, a big improvement over Watkins.

Watkins, btw, has 1 reception for 31 yards in two games for the highest-scoring offense in the league right now. With a full camp behind him.

    I will take Cooks.

    I will take Cooks.

Just 2 games against weak opposition, but still…

right now Cooks ranks against other wide receivers this way:

    4th in yards

6th in yards per reception (20.5)

    4th in yards per game

That’s with a 70.6% catch percentage, which is the highest for a Rams wide receiver with 30 or more receptions in a season since Torry Holt in 2007.

And his 20.5 yards per catch is the highest for a Rams wide receiver with 30 or more receptions since Flipper Anderson in 1994 (who also had 20.5, though that was for a whole season).

Just 2 games so far but a nice start.

Cooks reminds me of a GSOT WR. Ike, Torry, that kind of thing. Quick. Hard to cover. Wiley. Unafraid to go over the middle.

    Sammy was/is a different animal.

Sammy might be better in the redzone, i dunno.

At any rate, Cooks and Goff seem to have a good chemistry and are on the same page. Their timing is impressive after being together for such a short time.

Sammy was great in the red zone. He would just run a slant, and basically receive a handoff from the QB, and TD.

Hopefully Everett can become that guy, but he sure hasn’t done it yet.

I like Cooks better than Watkins.

But what the Rams may miss is Watkins’ downfield blocking ability. I think one of the reasons Gurley rebounded last season and broke off all those long open field runs was because of the improved blocking of his receivers – namely Sammy Watkins. It’s only been two games but he has yet to break off a big run.
