EARTH CITY, Mo. — At his end of the year news conference, St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher said he didn’t anticipate any changes to his coaching staff, offering an endorsement of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer in the process.
The key word there is anticipate. In other words, it’s possible a change could be made if a coach decided to leave for a different opportunity. On Sunday, the Athens (Georgia) Banner-Herald reported that Schottenheimer might be in line to make just such a move.
The University of Georgia is in need of a new offensive coordinator after Mike Bobo left to become the new head coach at Colorado State. Schottenheimer is one of three names that’s been mentioned as a possible replacement.
Technically, the Banner-Herald cites Schottenheimer’s name as having come up on Scout.com but either way his name has popped up.
The question that this begs is why, exactly, Schottenheimer would go to the college ranks for a coordinator job he already holds in the NFL? A college head coaching job, sure, but why a lateral coordinator job?
It remains to be seen how much validity there is to the connection between the sides here but one could argue that perhaps Schottenheimer might be looking for a fresh start somewhere considering that another poor offensive season could have his and every other coach on the current staff in a shaky spot moving forward.
Schottenheimer was in the mix for the Vanderbilt head coaching job a year ago but that gig ultimately went to Derek Mason. It seems unlikely Schottenheimer would move on for this type of a job but given the crazy things that happen in the coaching world on a consistent basis, it’s probably not wise to rule anything out.
