Rams have cut offensive lineman David Arkin, who was promoted from the practice squad late last season and appeared in two games.
May 2, 2017 at 9:22 pm #68297AgamemnonParticipantMay 3, 2017 at 9:34 am #68315sanbaggerParticipantI think they are gonna have some interesting cuts this year at couple of different positions.
I think they keep 6 WR’s on the 53
WR locks – TA, Woods, Kupp, Reynolds
WR bubble guys – Spruce, Thomas, Cooper, Marquez
WR’s cuts – McRoberts, ShippenMy thoughts on the bubble guys – Spruce had better come to camp healthy and show great hands and an ability to get open or he’ll find himself cut.
Thomas has big play ability and was a beast on ST’s….I think he makes the cut.
Cooper is an enigma to me. I have never been as over the moon on this guy as some, to me he’s just a guy and now that Fish, who loved him, is gone…he just might meet the Turk.
Marquez is a beast on ST’s…if there is a spot for a pure STer he might get that but I don’t think so.
At the end of the day I think Thomas and Spruce are the leaders in the clubhouse to land the 5th and 6th spots.

Getty ImagesThe 49ers cleared space for rookie additions to their roster on Tuesday by parting ways with 13 players, one of whom they may be seeing a couple of times during the 2017 season.
The Rams have claimed defensive tackle Mike Purcell off of waivers.
Purcell signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2013 and spent most of two years on the practice squad before playing two games late in the 2014 season. He played 23 games and started eight times the last two years, recording 42 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in those outings.
Purcell played in a 3-4 base defense during his time with the 49ers and the Rams are moving to one with Wade Phillips at the helm this season. That experience may help Purcell as he competes for a role up front in L.A. this year.

49ers roster breakdowns, 90-in-90: DT Mike Purcell
Breaking down the 90 players on the 49ers offseason roster in 90 posts (over 90 or so days). We move on to defensive tackle Mike Purcell.
Jun 6, 2016
http://www.ninersnation.com/2016/6/6/11869354/49ers-roster-breakdowns-90-in-90-dt-mike-purcell
Each year, we run a series of post called “90-in-90” here at Niners Nation. The idea is that we’ll take a look at every single player on the roster, from the very bottom to the top and break them down a few different ways. This is to help give everyone a basic understanding of a roster. Of course, this roster will change, and some days we’ll have more than one so it’s not strictly one per day but you get the idea.
The San Francisco 49ers have an extremely talented nose tackle in the form of Ian Williams. He earned more playing time in sub packages last year, but this offseason, the big red mark on his career popped up again. Williams had to have surgery on his ankle, with reports suggesting multiple surgeries. He played an entire 16-game schedule, but the surgeries are a big concern.
Enter Mike Purcell. The 49ers signed Purcell as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He spent the 2013 season and most of the 2014 season on the practice squad. The team promoted him to the 53-man roster on December 19, 2014. He finished out the season on the roster, and then earned a spot on the roster in 2015 training camp. He was inactive for the 49ers first eight games, but then was quickly worked into the rotation in Week 9. He got his promotion into game-day action before Glenn Dorsey tore his ACL, but added further snaps after Dorsey got hurt. He finished the season with 15 tackles and one sack.
Basic info
Age: 25Experience: 3 seasons (2 on the practice squad, 1+ on the 53-man roster)
Height: 6’3
Weight: 303 lbs
Contract status
Purcell signed a three-year deal when he was promoted from the practice squad in late 2014. He is entering the final year of that deal. If he makes the 53-man roster, he will have a base salary and cap hit of $525,000. He would then be an exclusive rights free agent after the season. Why he might improve
Last year marked Purcell’s first consistent playing time in the NFL (aside from the preseason). After sitting the first eight games, Purcell got more and more playing time over the final eight games. If he is going to take a step forward, it will be in part because of that significant opportunity. He did some good things in those eight games, and while he was not a star by any means, it was a step forward. He could see more playing time because of injuries to Ian Williams and Glenn Dorsey. If he can consistently get on the field, he could get a chance to put it all together. Why he might regress
Purcell sometimes feels like one of those players that home team fans love, but also probably overrate. He’s not a bad player, but it’s possible we have seen his ceiling. Considering the 49ers are implementing the philosophy of a new coaching staff, it’s hard to say what any of this means. However, Purcell can be re-directed at times, and so consistency is going to be something to watch.Odds of making the roster
The 49ers added a lot of defensive line talent this offseason, drafting DeForest Buckner and Ronald Blair, and signing Demetrius Cherry and Darren Lake. Purcell is likely strong bubble at worst, and considering he is getting first team work in place of injured Ian Williams and Glenn Dorsey, I imagine some might argue he is a lock. His role this fall remains up for debate though. If both Williams and Dorsey are unable to play Week 1, I would be surprised if anybody but Purcell was the starting nose tackle. Darren Lake is talented, but I see him most likely spending this season on the practice squad. There is some suggestion of Quinton Dial at nose tackle. We could very well see that, but open practices have seen him at defensive end in the 3-4.Purcell’s playing time will be something to track once Ian Williams is healthy. Barring any setbacks, Williams would seemingly return to the starting nose tackle role. Purcell could find himself in a tough position competing for playing time at defensive tackle. The 49ers will need the depth given the injuries that have taken down Glenn Dorsey and/or Ian Williams in recent years. But once Williams (and then Dorsey) are healthy, what exactly is Purcell’s role? Is he the new Tony Jerod-Eddie?

Kwayde Miller
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-7.5 / 300
PROJECTED ROUND
FABio:
Two-year starter at left tackle who played in three games as a sophomore after sitting his entire freshman season. Moved from tight end to the offensive line during his junior year of high school.
Pos:
Large tackle prospect only effective in a small area. Stays square, keeps his feet moving and uses his hands to knock pass rushers from their angles of attack. Agile, displays a good degree of quickness in his game and can adjust to oncoming rushers. Correctly places his hands into defenders and steers them from the action.Neg:
Plays with little-to-no knee bend and poor pad level. Struggles finishing blocks.Analysis:
Miller possesses next-level size which he negates by blocking with no leverage. He offers a good degree of upside but will have no chance at making it in the NFL if he does not improve his mechanics.May 6, 2017 at 12:11 pm #68440May 6, 2017 at 2:32 pm #68445AgamemnonParticipantMay 11, 2017 at 5:10 pm #68645znModeratorThe Rams have waived QB Aaron Murray, per source. May 11, 2017 at 5:36 pm #68646AgamemnonParticipantWhether they add another arm or two for camp, I think they might go with only 2 QBs this year. There are too many FAs next year and I think they will try to find as many players this year as they can. I think they are shooting to complete the team for 2019. That would be McVay’s 3rd year. How long is his contract?

LOS ANGELES — Former Occidental quarterback Bryan Scott ’17 has been invited to the Los Angeles Rams Rookie Camp this weekend.
The 2016 SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year will participate in team activities and drills from Friday to Monday.
Scott, who has drawn interest from everyone from NFL, CFL and AFL teams, got the call late on Wednesday night.
“It’s a great and exciting time for my family and me,” said Scott, who will graduate in less than two weeks with a degree in economics. “Getting that call was one of the best moments of my life. I’m proud and honored to be a Ram and very thankful to their organization.”
During his career as a Tiger, Scott led one of the best NCAA Division III offenses in the country and broke most Oxy and SCIAC passing records, including becoming the SCIAC’s all-time leader in passing yardage.
Scott, who’s from Rolling Hills, threw for a total of 9,073 yards as a four-year starter, led the SCIAC in passing yards per game (339.8) and touchdowns (27), was second in completion percentage (66.4), and third in rushing touchdowns (8) in 2016. He also became Oxy’s single season passing yards leader (3,058) during 2016 and his 339.8 passing yards per game ranked in the top 10 in the country for NCAA Division III.
Scott has been making a headlines this spring ever since he began getting serious about playing football at the next level. In April, Oxy alumnus and legendary LA Times columnist Sam Farmer ’88 wrote about Occidental’s Scott Getting His Shot at the Big Time after an impressive day at the University of Southern California’s pro day.
“I’ve had a special and blessed journey starting when I was 5-years-old and to get invited to an NFL camp is a dream come true,” Scott said. “Also a huge than you to Oxy and the Foxhole for getting me to this point.”

Travis Wilson joins LA Rams as Tight End
39 comments
by Shane.Roberts Mar 1, 2017, 8:19pm MSTThe Bulldog is back! Former Utah quarterback, Travis Wilson is going to get his shot in the NFL, but at tight end, and not QB. Wilson signed with the LA Rams yesterday, and will have an opportunity to live out his dreams. Wilson was slated to go to Australia to play in a new football league there, but the league postponed their start until 2017 due to some stadium and visa issues.
This is a great move by Travis, as QB was never in his future at the next level, but with his size and athleticism, he may be able to make a career at tight end. I’m not sure how he is at running routes or catching the ball, but his size is definitely a major bonus. Travis showed a ton of athleticism during his career at the U, and people may forget that he was a big time volleyball player in high school in SoCal.
Here’s what Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham said about Wilson (via ESPN):
Rams surprisingly signed former Pac-12 quarterback to play tight end
“Obviously we only had experience with him as a quarterback and that’s all he ever played for us. He won a lot of games for us. But that’s a good question, where he fits in at the next level? There are probably a couple of places that would be possibilities outside of quarterback. He’s got the big frame. He’s got great hands. He can catch very well. That’s interesting if someone can put 10-20 pounds on his frame and make him a tight end.”
The same report explains that he also played wide receiver and linebacker early in high school.

Teidrick Smith: One of the front four
http://www.d3football.com/columns/around-the-region/south/2015/umhb-teidrick-smith-front-four
Teidrick Smith is one of the best defensive players in the nation, and with that distinction comes a tidal wave of accolades for the junior Mary Hardin-Baylor defensive end.
Smith is the reigning American Southwest Conference Defensive Player and Lineman of the Year in 2014 and he’s the frontrunner for the honors again this year. To top it off, he was a D3football.com honorable-mention All-American last season and is a preseason All-American this year.
But ask Smith about the recognition and he will tell you it’s not something he thinks about.
“I try to block it all out because I’m all about putting the team first,” Smith said. “I want to be a leader and do what I can to help our team succeed and compete for a championship.”
Smith is doing just that, ranking third on the team in tackles (24) and second in sacks (7.5).
“I’ve played well,” Smith said. “But I can always be better and I work to get better every week.”
It’s a scary thought that Smith can be better considering what he has done already, racking up more than 100 tackles (108) and close to 20 sacks (18.5) in his first two seasons. His success is no fluke.
“He has an incredible work ethic,” Crusaders coach Pete Fredenburg said. “He’s a great role model for our younger players because he works hard in practice and expects a lot of himself and his teammates.”
The Cru has lived up to expectations so far, winning its first five games and giving up 20 or more points only once. UMHB is holding opponents to an average of 255.6 yards per game.
“We have great players on our defensive line. The front four has done a tremendous job of getting pressure on the quarterback,” Fredenburg said.
Smith said the work he and his teammates put in during practice makes a difference as well in the Crusaders’ ability to be one of the best defensive teams in the country.
“We take a lot of pride in being a great defense,” Smith said. “We do a lot of drills in practice that prepare us for each game and the coaches put us in a good position to execute our game plan every week.”
Expectations are high for the Cru, who hope to make another playoff run and contend for the national championship.
“We’ve established high goals here that the players want to achieve and developing good team chemistry is big part of our success,” Fredenburg said. “The big thing is that we work to get better every week.”
Smith plans to do what he can to keep the Cru on the right track.
“We can’t be satisfied,” Smith said. “It’s all about providing good leadership and staying focused on each game.”

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports
One of Utah’s most controversial players over the past couple of seasons, Domo Hatfield, has been offered a contract with the LA Rams, per a tweet from his former position coach Sharrieff Shah. The former Utah corner was controversial for many reasons, on and off the field, but he will also be remembered as a trash talking playmaker, who jumped into the two deep early on in his career after switching from wide receiver. Although his senior season had some injury issues, and a less than ceremonious exit from the team, since he was suspended for the bowl game, his final game in a Utah uniform.
For his career, Domo had 101 total tackles, with 6 interceptions, 2 of which were returned for scores. His best year was his junior season, when he had 4 of those picks, and his sophomore seasons was also really good, with 10 pass deflections.
I’m a big fan of Domo, overall, although I wish he would have handled the end of his career on the Hill a little better. I’ll be cheering for him like crazy, and hopefully he can stay at home in LA and have a nice career.
