NFL rumors: Raiders release Rodney Hudson in surprising, strange move

Report: Raiders release Hudson in surprising, strange move originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

The Raiders made a surprising move Tuesday.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported, citing a source, that the Raiders are releasing Pro Bowl center Rodney Hudson.

Not only is this surprising, but the timing also seems strange. The Raiders actually lost $2 million in salary-cap space by making the move.

The Raiders are completely overhauling their offensive line this offseason. Along with cutting Hudson, they reportedly have released guards Gabe Jackson and Richie Incognito, and are trading tackle Trent Brown to the Patriots.

Just so happens I was a-listnin to sports chatter on my drive home today, and Peter King was saying that the release of Hudson raises questions because Hudson is good, and it is one of his top 5 mysteries.

it doesn’t make any sense. the raiders don’t even save any money by cutting him.

for what it’s worth da silva thinks he’d be a great fit for the rams.

There is going to be a bidding war for him, and we don’t have enough money to sign Mr.Hudson.

    from https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/31076785/source-las-vegas-raiders-release-former-pro-bowl-center-rodney-hudson

Hudson, who turns 32 in July, signed a three-year, $33.4 million extension, with $24.4 million guaranteed, on Aug. 30, 2019, which made him the highest-paid center in the NFL in terms of annual pay per year at $11.13 million a season. He restructured his contract for cap purposes last summer.

Per ESPN’s Dan Graziano, $3.5 million of Hudson’s $9.55 million salary for this year was guaranteed, giving the Raiders a $6.05 million savings in cash this year, $10.5 million in cash next year. But in terms of the salary cap, Las Vegas will take a cap hit of nearly $2 million unless the Raiders designate him as a post-June 1 cut. Cutting Hudson now would incur a $15.614 million dead-money hit (higher than his salary-cap number of $13.637 million).

Designating him a post-June 1 cut would save the Raiders $6.4 million against the cap this year but would leave them with dead-money hits of $7.237 million this year and $10.737 million next year. Plus, they could not use those cap savings until June 2.

Hudson, a four-time winner of the team’s Commitment to Excellence Award as voted on by teammates, has been solid, if not spectacular by center standards for the Raiders since signing as a free agent in 2015 after four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. Pro Football Focus charged Hudson with three sacks allowed in 3,445 pass-blocking snaps with the Raiders.

Wtf? Just saw report Raiders are trying to trade Rodney Hudson? Yesterday it was announced he was released. So the reporters jumped the gun on the report, or the Raiders leaked they were releasing him IF they couldn’t trade him & in the process hurt his trade value. Weird.

The Raiders had said they would release Rodney Hudson but before the transaction was processed they have decided to seek a trade instead. I wonder if the Raiders saw the interest in him, or if a team gave them a quick call and said “don’t release him, trade him to us”

Raiders are trading C Rodney Hudson and 7th-round pick to Arizona for a 3rd-round pick, per sources.

Smh….a third. Just a third for one of the best centers in the league. Arizona making moves today also added AJ Green they going for it. Now more protection for Murray..

    Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
I’ve gotten five texts from NFL people saying this was tremendous value in this market.

The #Raiders offensive line was their biggest strength. A few weeks later and Trent Brown, Gabe Jackson, Richie Incognito and Rodney Hudson are all gone. Completely dismantled.
