It does sound a bit strange.

January 7, 2015 at 2:37 pm #15731znModeratorBrian Schottenheimer leaving Rams to become Georgia’s offensive coordinator
By Katie Sharp
The St. Louis Rams will have a new offensive coordinator next season. Brian Schottenheimer has left the team to become the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Georgia, as first reported by Seth Emerson of the Macon Telegraph and since confirmed by Georgia.
Schottenheimer was the Rams offensive coordinator for the past three seasons, during which the Rams ranked 28th in total offense (316.2 yards per game) and 25th in scoring offense (20.2 points per game). The team ranked in the bottom third of the league in most offensive categories each season, and showed little improvement statistically during his three-year tenure with the Rams. Prior to coming to St. Louis, Schottenheimer spent six seasons in the same position with the New York Jets, where he had more success as their offensive coordinator thanks to a strong ground game. The 2009 Jets led the league in rushing yards and ranked fifth in yards per carry.
If there is one hole in his resume, it is that Schottenheimer has never overseen a dynamic aerial attack. Although admittedly he has not worked with an elite quarterback during his time in both New York and St. Louis, his teams never ranked in the top half of the league in passing yardage.

I think this is a friendly firing.
Hey I am not going to fire you, but…find a job.
Or at least I will think that until we find out something different.

Funny thing is Josh Heupel(Bradford’s Old OC) Resigned from his job yesterday.

I like Schott actually. But either way, they ain’t gonna hire Martz, I bet. Anyway, onward and upward…we’ll see what they do.

I didn’t like Schotty. What OC takes forever getting a first round draft pick (Tavon Austin) into the offense? Into an anemic offense at that.

Brian Schottenheimer to Georgia
By Edward Aschoff
ESPN.comGeorgia’s search for its new offensive coordinator ended Wednesday, as coach Mark Richt announced the hire of veteran NFL coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
Schottenheimer, who spent the past three years serving as the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, replaces longtime offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who took over as head coach at Colorado State on Dec. 22.
Brian Schottenheimer
Brian Schottenheimer, who played at Florida in the mid-1990s, returns to the SEC as Georgia’s offensive coordinator.“I’m excited to have Brian join our coaching staff,” Richt said in a statement through the school. “His NFL experience will be a perfect fit for how we like to play offensive football here at Georgia. He’ll be excellent in developing our players in both the running and passing games, which will benefit them while they are at Georgia and for their future.”
Schottenheimer, the son of longtime NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, will also coach Georgia’s quarterbacks.
Before his three seasons with the Rams, Brian Schottenheimer was the offensive coordinator for the Jets (2006 to 2011) and the quarterbacks coach for the Chargers (2002 to ’05) and Redskins (2001).
The Rams finished the regular season ranked 28th in total offense (314.7 yards per game) and 21st in scoring (20.3 points per game).
Schottenheimer doesn’t have any coaching experience in the SEC, but he did transfer from Kansas to Florida, and he played for the Gators from 1994 to 1996. He graduated from Florida in 1997 with a degree in exercise and sports science.
“This is a great opportunity to become a Georgia Bulldog for both my career and my family,” Schottenheimer said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to be part of an elite program with such national tradition and a great staff already in place. I look forward to working with young men and being a positive and significant influence on their lives as we develop them athletically, academically and socially.”
Before moving to the NFL, Schottenheimer, 41, was an assistant coach with USC and Syracuse.

Schottenheimer leaves Rams for Georgia coordinator’s job
21 minutes ago • By Jim ThomasBrian Schottenheimer has interviewed for jobs in each of the previous two offseasons, only to return to St. Louis.
This time he’s leaving.
After three seasons as offensive coordinator for Jeff Fisher in St. Louis, Schottenheimer is leaving the Rams to become offensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Rams general manager Les Snead confirmed Schottnheimer’s departure during a previously scheduled media session with reporters on Wednesday,
Schottenheimer, 41, interviewed with Jacksonville after the 2012 season for the Jaguars’ head coaching job, which went to Gus Bradley.
Following the 2013 season, he interviewed for the Vanderbilt head-coaching job, which went to Derek Mason.
Snead said the Rams only became aware of Schottenheimer’s interest in the Georgia coordinator’s job within the past few days.
So Fisher, who said at his season-ending press conference Dec. 30 that he anticipated no staff changes, now has an important hire to make.

I don’t doubt it for a second, myself. LOok at Brian Quick, for one. And in college Tavon was never really a receiver. Remember he said the playbook in 2013 was like it was in Spanish. I doubt he can run more than a handful of routes at the pro level with any real effectiveness, at least so far. That’s one reason I always saw him, before they even drafted him, not as a receiver but as something else (combined yards weapon). He’s just not a natural receiver type…it isn’t what he is. And I was for drafting him. Plus I never bought this “lack of creativity” mantra on Schott. I always thought it was just this automated mantra.

I’m not automated and such mantra about Schotty is deserved. Whether TA was worth a first round pick is on others.

I like him too… look at the last game against Seattle, he did the best with what he had…… Hill throws a pick at a DL. …. Cook drops a sure TD in the endzone, on the same series, Cunningham gets the ball swatted at the goal line. Game was winnable, not Schotty fault at all.
Too bad.

Yeah that “automated” phrase came off wrong. But I also really don’t buy the “creativity” thing on Schott. How “creative” were Bevell and Roman? Heck one of the reasons Seattle let Harvin go–according to them–is that there is only so much you can do to fit a guy like that in. And IMO there’s no problem with Tavon or with picking him, it’s just that he should never be thought of as a (pure) receiver. And when he was a slow learner in 2013, I didn’t see any reason why that would change overnight in 2014. Heck it took Dante Hall 3 years before he caught more than 30 something passes. I just think that as a receiver, Tavon is in the same boat. I think he will learn a lot more than he knows, if people are patient, but so far he is more or less what many thought he would be–a multi-purpose, combined yards guy.

Harvin was a cancer in the locker room. That is why he had to go. Good move by Carrol. Harvin was also injured too much and at the end refused to play. I wish the best for TA but in real progress I like what his WV teammate Bailey has shown this year in what shortened season he had.

But, I do wonder if this was a “friendly firing,” as zn put it. Just smells fishy.

Yes that was said about Harvin too. It was also said there was only so much they could do with him.
…Harvin was difficult for offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell to integrate into the Seahawks’ offense. He’s not your average receiver that runs the entire route tree and can get open on his own. Seattle had to scheme plays to get him the ball, and they were struggling to do so.
I agree that Bailey looks good.
January 7, 2015 at 6:52 pm #15777InvaderRamModeratoror maybe there’s something wrong with the wide receivers coach? i don’t know.
or maybe bradford was injured, and they had to get by with spare pieces.
or maybe schotty is holding them back.
or maybe the oline was in tatters. as per usual.
or maybe they’re young and still developing.
or maybe they’re just not good enough.
or maybe it’s all of those things.
i just hope that.
1. they have a healthy starting qb next year.
2. they get a competent oc.
3. they get a revamped and healthy oline.
4. they continue to get better.
5. they are as good as the rams think they are. -
