Practice Report 7/26: McVay Focused on Establishing Culture

    Clarence Dennis
    https://www.therams.com/news/practice-report-7-26-mcvay-focused-on-establishing-culture

The 2018 Los Angeles Rams opened the first practice of training camp at 3 p.m. sharp on Thursday. The University of California Irvine practice field was lined with Rams fans and media members excited for the first look at the reigning NFC West Champions and many of the new numbers in blue and white.

    GOALS FOR CAMP

Second-year head coach Sean McVay was equally eager to get football underway with his brand-new cast of Rams. Following practice, McVay had positive things to say about his group, applauding his team’s overall attitude entering Day 1.
“I think you just like getting back out here with the guys again and the way that they competed. There are things that we can certainly clean up, but I think it was a step in the right direction,” McVay said. “Until we go back to look at the tape, it’s hard to know [what he liked most] exactly, but I thought guys were competing hard and there’s a lot of energy and enthusiasm out here.
”Still a few days before practices in pads, McVay stressed the importance of his group jelling. The Rams return 10 of 11 starters on offense and welcome a handful of newbies on defense. Although early practices are neither full-contact nor padded, McVay believes his team can make strides.

“The biggest thing that we’re looking to do is establish our culture, establish what we identify as our football philosophy, and just most importantly, come together as a team. Those things will always remain the same and if we are able to do those things one day at a time, we feel like good things will happen for us,” McVay said.

    NEW TEAMMATES SHARE APPRECIATION

Veteran cornerback Aqib Talib participated in his first practice as an L.A. Ram on Thursday, rejoining his former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips on the practice field. Talib, who broke up a Goff pass today, aligned with his new head coach on how he believed practice went.
“I think it went good — it went well — energy was good — that’s important on the first day — you got to come out with a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm and that was definitely there,” Talib said.
The 32-year-old Super Bowl 50 Champion was complimentary about his new teammate, quarterback Jared Goff — specifically of Goff’s mental strength.
“Confident guy, man,” Talib said of Goff. “You can see his confidence is rising through the roof with coach Sean [McVay].”
Talib also commented on Goff’s arm.
“Super accurate deep-balls man — he throws deep-balls and it lands in the perfect spot. That’s huge in the NFL. A lot of guys can’t throw deep balls, so you find a guy who is super accurate with those deep-balls, you stretch the defense…” Talib said.
Goff returned praise, calling Talib a “ball-hawk” following his first training camp practice against the two new corners, Talib and Marcus Peters. The pair will pose a new daily challenge for Goff and McVay’s offense
“It’s really fun and challenging everyday to go against those guys — Aqib does stuff that’s unusual that you don’t see everyday — that’s the reason he’s an all-pro and 10-year guy…” Goff said.

When asked what specifically about Talib’s game causes headaches for quarterbacks, Goff credited Talib’s creativity and ability to think like good corners do — outside of the box.
“I think just the way they understand route concepts and the way they understand the quarterback position, they don’t just go by the book every single play. There’s a little bit of feel here and there and that’s what makes those players really good,” Goff said.
The in-house battle between Talib and Goff should be fun to watch throughout camp.

An interesting observation from #Rams camp: CB’s Marcus Peters & Aqib Talib – who are roommates – seem joined at the hip. Talib has clearly taken Peters under his wing, and it’s obvious Talib is happy to oblige as he’s already raved about Peter’s love & respect for football

Also, Jared Goff talked about working against Peters and Talib in practice, and how good they are not just talent wise but their savvy understanding of the position and how they’ll cleverly go off script to mess with QB’s/WR’s

That said, Goff dropped some dimes today against an aggressive e and competitive secondary

10 Observations from Day 1 of Training Camp

    Myles Simmons

    https://www.therams.com/news/10-observations-from-day-1-of-training-camp

    1) First observation is uniform related: The Rams got new practice jerseys. Gone are the royal blue practice jerseys the offense has been wearing for the last few years. In are darker navy blue jerseys with white numerals. The defense is still wearing white.
    2) There’s also a new feature at camp — a small video board on the far end zones closest to the biergarten. It displays a high view of the plays just after they’re completed for on-field review.
    3) After beginning with a special teams period — where the club appeared to be working on kickoff drills — Los Angeles’ offense began the session with ball security work. Head coach Sean McVay often began offensive sessions this way during the offseason program, too, signifying the importance of keeping possessions.
    4) A McVay practice doesn’t seem to really start until the head coach gets on the field and starts covering receivers when they’re running routes against air. McVay did that early in the season on Thursday afternoon, seeming to work against crossing routes in particular to get his steps in.

    5) Another staple of a McVay practice is tempo. The head coach was encouraging the quarterbacks and wide receivers to keep moving quickly in order to make the most of the allotted time in each drill.
    6) For the first one-on-one drills of the year, Los Angeles’ quarterbacks and wideouts seemed to get the better of the secondary. Jared Goff completed passes short passes to Brandin Cooks, Cooper Kupp, and Robert Woods against Marcus Peters, Nickell Robey-Coleman, and Aqib Talib, respectively. Each time, Goff had to fit the ball into a tight window, and he did.
    7) Also in one-on-one drills, wide receiver Mike Thomas went up and snagged a pass over cornerback Sam Shields down the left sideline. It was a nice play for the third-year wide receiver out of Southern Miss.
    8) It’s a small detail, but in 7-on-7 drills, Peters tried to rip the ball out of Cooks’ hands after a pass that would have moved the chains for a first down. It was a short throw — the offense needed only three or four yards — and Cooks had enough for it and had secured the ball. But it’s that kind of effort on the first day of camp in 7-on-7 that makes Peters such an elite defender. He does have five career forced fumbles — including three in 2017.
    9) Also during 7-on-7 drills, linebacker Ramik Wilson made an athletic, juggling interception on a pass from Goff to tight end Tyler Higbee down the seam. The ball was well thrown, but safety Lamarcus Joyner, Wilson, and Higbee all converged toward the ball at the same time. With the ball tipped, Wilson nearly picked it off, couldn’t secure it, fell to the ground, and still couldn’t quite secure it. Though Talib almost picked up the still-live ball and ran with it, Wilson finally secured the pick.

    10) It’s difficult to evaluate the run game when the team doesn’t have on pads. But there were a couple runs in 11-on-11 drills where Gurley burst through a solid hole from the offensive line and sped down the field for big gains. Goff joked in his press conference that there’s maybe a reason Gurley’s had a touch more pep in his step over the last couple days.

I spent a lot of time watching the DB group yesterday. lt looks elite. And keep in mind, there is a belief in the #Rams building that Troy Hill was playing every bit as good as Trumain Johnson was down the stretch last year.

#Rams were very comfortable with the prospect of Hill as a starter this year, had it played out that way. They believe they have starting quality players in reserve.

Rams’ offense had to run sprints at the end of practice after losing a competition to the defense. Andrew Whitworth, age 36, was out front. Sean McVay said, “That’s kind of par for the course for him. That’s why he’s ‘Old Faithful.’”

Ndamukong Suh said he’s looking forward to playing with Aaron Donald but hasn’t talked contracts with him. Suh: “He deserves more than I got, so I’ll leave it at that.” Suh signed for 6 years and $114 million with Miami in 2015.

Rookie report from Day 2 of Rams training camp: Offensive tackle Joseph Noteboom, a third-round pick from TCU, took some reps at second-team right guard — which means the rookie, at times, lined up across from Ndamukong Suh. Noteboom and Austin Blythe are competing to replace Jamon Brown as Brown serves a two-game suspension. Defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers, a fourth-round pick from Stephen F. Austin, got some reps with the starters. “He’s shown the ability to move across the front,” coach Sean McVay said. “He’s got a natural rush ability, he can really work edges on people.”

Quote of the Day on Thursday came from defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh on Aaron Donald: “He’s a guy that I’ve watched from afar and hopefully have an opportunity sometime soon to get on the same field and be on the same side of the ball… I spoke to him at the very beginning of everything. I’ve obviously stayed out of contract stuff and things of that nature, it’s really none of my business. I wish him all the best, he deserves more than what I got, so I’ll kind of leave it at that.”

Aqib Talib was impressed by Jared Goff’s deep ball accuracy on Day 1 of Rams training camp. Day 2 showed more of the same. Goff’s chemistry with Brandin Cooks is well on its way as Cooks caught a couple of mid-range throws in tight space as well as a deep pass from Goff. “They’ve got a good rapport,” coach Sean McVay said. “It’s day two, like you mentioned, so there’s a lot of work that we still have to get done, but I thought it was a step in the right direction.” Goff also connected on a deep ball to Robert Woods as he was covered by Marcus Peters.

10 Observations from Day 2 of Training Camp

    Myles Simmons

    https://www.therams.com/news/10-observations-from-day-2-of-training-camp

    1) Friday’s session was closed to Rams season ticket holders, but Crawford Field at UC Irvine was still packed. There was plenty of energy following the big announcement that Los Angeles has changed its primary “color” uniform to the iconic royal blue and yellow for the next two seasons.
    2) Rams Hall of Fame offensive tackle Jackie Slater was in attendance for Friday’s practice. He spent some time talking with the defensive linemen before the session began, particularly defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. “It’s great, obviously, to have them around, be able to pick their brains, be able to talk to them, interact with them,” Suh would say of the interaction after practice.
    3) With such a large crowd, fans got audibly excited when quarterback Jared Goff hit wide receiver Brandin Cooks with a deep pass down the left sideline. It was a nice ball, but it should’ve been — the offense was going against air. Those are the plays that should work, and in this case they did.
    4) The defensive line spent a good portion of individual drills practicing ripping the ball out from a ballcarrier. Players partnered up, with one playing the part of running back with the other tasked to create a takeaway running up from behind. On one of Suh’s reps, he punched the ball out so hard that it landed in a hospitality tent. Sources say Suh is a pretty strong guy.
    5) During one-on-one drills, cornerback Kevin Peterson nearly picked off quarterback Sean Mannion on a short out route. Peterson read the route perfectly and got his hands on the ball, but just didn’t complete the catch.
    6) Also in one-on-ones, wide receiver Robert Woods made a nice move to shake cornerback Marcus Peters and then made a nice catch in the middle of the field. That’s not easy to do with an elite man coverage player like Peters.
    7) Later in the session, Goff connected with tight end Gerald Everett on a ball deep over the middle. Everett had to stretch out to make the catch, which was fit into a tight window to evade double coverage. Everett has flashed a bit over the first two days of camp, making a number of receptions on the first- and second-team offense.

    8) During 11-on-11, Cooks made a nice catch over the middle that also drew some cheers from the crowd. This one was a bit more impressive since Cooks had some competition aside from the air — Peters was draped all over him. An “iron sharpens iron” situation, to be sure.
    9) Head coach Sean McVay is known for using different tempos to try to keep a defense off guard. With that in mind, the offense did get in some no-huddle work during the second 11-on-11 segment of the day. Goff connected with wideout Robert Woods on a deep crossing route for what would’ve been at least a 20-yard gain.
    10) Finally, linebacker Ramik Wilson has flashed over the first two days, consistently getting his hands on the ball. On Friday, Wilson nearly picked off two passes in the flat during separate 11-on-11 drills. Wilson has received the bulk of playing time at inside linebacker alongside linebacker Cory Littleton early in camp.

Practice Report 7/27: Defense Runs the Offense

    Clarence Dennis

    https://www.therams.com/news/practice-report-7-27-defense-runs-the-offense-wade-phillips-is-the-man

The newly covered bleachers surrounding the UC Irvine practice fields were nearly full of Rams season ticket holders, who were invited to an exclusive practice on Friday. One-on-one matchups and 7-on-7 action yielded several “oohs” and “aahs” from the Rams most faithful.
Practice ended with a bit of a competition between head coach Sean McVay’s offense and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ star-studded defense, in which both the offensive and defensive first and second units faced off in a small situational scrimmage.
Just yesterday, quarterback Jared Goff said he was “excited” to face the Rams’ new and improved defense on a daily basis. And on Friday, the defense came out on top.
Fans applauded McVay’s offense as it paid the price of losing the friendly competition — one cross-field ‘gasser’ (which was lead by veteran offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth). McVay’s offense couldn’t get the job done under defensive pressure and quick pass-game coverage, highlighted by the Rams’ (physically) largest addition on defense, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who made an impression on McVay.
“We finished up with some competitive, kind of unscripted stuff and I thought it was a good back and forth. Defensively, you could feel Ndamukong — his presence up front with some good rushes,” McVay said. “I thought our back-end was contesting throws, making things difficult… it’s exciting seeing those guys compete against each other.”

Suh, who happily went over the pronunciation of his first name with newly acquainted reporters after practice, said he’s “enjoyed” his time learning a new defense and “believes the sky’s the limit” for his group if they come together as a unit.
“I think at the end of the day we’ve got a lot of talent, but talent means nothing if you’re not going to put it together, it’s as simple as that,” Suh said.

VETS WILL GO EASY ON DAY 3

Both McVay and Talib confirmed high energy entering the first day of practice on Thursday. On Friday, the energy at practice seemed a bit lower, with higher temperatures and less of a breeze in Irvine.
McVay said shortly after practice that he expects Saturday to be a bit easier on many of his veteran guys, as this is the most football played in a while and he’d like to avoid “wearing guys out” early on.
“That’s the plan. Plans are pads on Sunday. We anticipate a little bit of a de-load day tomorrow. Kind of our third day in a row, we’ll give some of the veteran guys a little less work. They’ll get a majority of their work in the walk-thru. Day 4 will really represent a chance for us to ramp it back up again,” McVay said.

Pharoh Cooper said he had shoulder surgery after last season. He didn’t want to say it, but it seems he was playing through major issues at the end of the year, including his fumble in the playoff game. More to come on that.

    German reporters to Wade Phillips:

“Now you are 71 years old…”

    Wade: “At least, yeah.”

Germans: “It is a big accomplishment, to still be in the league…”

Wade: “To still be alive, yeah.”

10 Observations from Day 3 of Training Camp

    Myles Simmons

    https://www.therams.com/news/10-observations-from-day-3-of-training-camp

    1) Los Angeles began the session with special teams and Johnny Hekker launching a number of punts. Hekker was routinely making his kicks at least 45 yards, working to move the ball in a number of different directions. During the offseason program, special teams coordinator John Fassel said one of Hekker’s goals for 2018 was to get better at directional punts.
    2) As head coach Sean McVay said would be the case, many of the Rams veteran players received practice off. Among others, the list included the Rams’ longtime veteran offensive linemen — Andrew Whitworth, Rodger Saffold, and John Sullivan — along with defensive linemen Ndamukong Suh and Michael Brockers, and cornerback Aqib Talib. With his heavy use rate, running back Todd Gurley also received a vet day.
    3) During individual drills, the tight ends came over to work with the offensive line on a pair of sleds. Most linemen and tight ends worked in pairs to push the two-man sleds. But others went solo to get in some good work.
    4) On the defensive field, safeties spent time working on deep drops and interceptions. On one throw, safety John Johnson showed his considerable vertical, leaping up to make a pick. The play came against air, so take that for what it’s worth. But the raw athleticism is real.
    5) McVay often talks about the need to maximize each moment during practice because there’s limited time. On Saturday, Los Angeles did that by splitting a field in half and running two-on-two, or three-on-three drills with quarterbacks, wide receivers, and the secondary. During that period, quarterback Jared Goff connected with wideout Brandin Cooks on a deep ball down the left side of the field.
    6) The first 11-on-11 period of the day started with a nice touch pass from Goff to wide receiver Cooper Kupp. The Eastern Washington product caught the pass one handed over the middle of the field on a crossing route.
    7) With many of the veterans resting on the offensive line, rookies Joe Noteboom and Jamil Demby received an opportunity for some extended reps. On one play in 11-on-11, Noteboom and Demby made a solid double-team block at the point of attack to spring running back Justin Davis for a solid five-to-six-yard run. The rookie duo slapped hands after the run in recognition of solid teamwork.

    8) One reason Los Angeles wanted to re-sign slot corner Nickell Robey-Coleman this offseason was his ability to always be in position to stuff quick screens and swing passes in the flat. Robey-Coleman displayed that ability on Saturday, when wideout Pharoh Cooper received a swing pass from quarterback Sean Mannion and the slot corner out of USC was right there to make a play. He didn’t, of course, since the Rams weren’t in pads. But it was clear that he would have.
    9) With McVay making Saturday’s practice a bit of a lighter session, some reserves got more time in 11-on-11 than they normally would. Quarterback Brandon Allen was able to take advantage of the opportunity, making a nice downfield completion to wide receiver Fred Brown off play action during a period.
    10) Finally, it was nice to see kicker Greg Zuerlein nail four of his field-goal attempts during the later stages of practice. It was the first time Zuerlein’s kicked in an open practice during camp. Zuerlein — who was placed on injured reserve with a back injury requiring surgery after the Week 15 victory over Seattle — hit his longest field goal of the day from 45-yards out. In his daily press conference, McVay said Zuerlein “looked like the old Greg” with the successful kicks.

Day 3 of Rams training camp and again, it’s Jared Goff and Brandin Cooks who continue to impress. Goff connected with Cooks on a deep pass for a touchdown in seven-on-seven, then in team play they connected on two-of-three deep balls. The miss came on play-action deep over the middle, the ball fell inches beyond Cooks’ reach at the goal line.

Not saying they’ll contribute right away, but I liked the way Micah Kiser, Justin Lawler and John Franklin-Myers looked in OTAs and minicamp. Also Temarrick Hemingway has a shot to carve out a nice role for himself as the backup at the Y.

I’m also going to watch closely how Josh Reynolds works to get targets, how specifically coach Phillips is going to use those DLs and what the secondary depth looks like.

They’re in thud, which means no going to ground despite wearing pads. That said, not always easy to hit the breaks. Cory Littleton and Justin Davis end up on the ground after a big collision in the hole. Think JFM was in there too.

After a couple incompletions in a row in 11 on 11s, including one caused by an Ethan Westbrooks pressure, Jared Goff hits Cooper Kupp for a big play on a screen. Then finds Robert Woods over the middle.

Troy Hill tries to undercut a Brandin Cooks route across the middle. Forces a juggling catch out of Cooks. Draws oohs and ahhs from the crowd. And Hill gets a low five from cornerback coach Aubrey Pleasant.

Sean McVay said he initially thought John Sullivan’s injury might have been a mild arm issue. No other injuries today that he knew of. Rams will be back in pads tomorrow.

Today was the first time #Rams CB Sam Shields has been in full pads since 9/11/16, He’s been an early hit in training camp although he said he’s still in the process of getting re-acclimated. If he stays healthy, he really lengthens an already deep CB group.

Practice Report 7/29: First Padded Practice

    Clarence Dennis

    https://www.therams.com/news/practice-report-7-29-first-padded-practice

It seems fitting that the Rams first padded practice of 2018 came on a Sunday.
The first padded practice of camp provided a bit more of a realistic look at the what this year’s Rams might look like on Sundays that count.
Throughout the first few days of training camp, head coach Sean McVay has mentioned how it’s easier to evaluate practices once players are in pads.
On Saturday, McVay said his team won’t go full-tackle football during camp, but padded practices will allow the team to “thud.”
“I think we’ve got a lot of guys that know how to practice [with] pads on,” McVay said following Saturday’s practice. “Want to try to make sure we’re getting that physicality, but also limiting the risk for injury with some of things that can occur when guys are going to the ground, consistently getting rolled up on.”
Veteran center John Sullivan exited Sunday’s practice early, but McVay said he expects Sullivan to be “OK.”
Overall, McVay considered Day 1 in pads a success.
“For the first day, the biggest thing is great energy. Guys were competing but doing it in a smart way and that’s what we like,” McVay said.

    PHYSICAL DEFENSE

McVay got his desired physicality and maybe more in some instances on Sunday afternoon. Some of the first “thuds” of the season could be heard when the defensive linemen, led by Michael Brockers and Ndamukong Suh, joined veteran Andrew Whitworth’s offensive line for a series of drills to start practice.
Once scrimmage was underway, fans reacted to a handful of hits that may have surpassed McVay’s definition of the word “thud” — kicked off by a strong defensive effort by defensive back Isaiah Johnson on tight end Gerald Everett.
The tough hits on tight ends continued just a few minutes later, when safety Marqui Christian laid the biggest hit of the day on tight end Temarrick Hemingway. Christian rounded out his big day with an interception.
Big hits and all, McVay praised his teams’ now-padded defensive effort.

“I thought the defense did a great job, came out with good energy, matched a lot of our concepts, played the run really well, and the offense found a way to have a little bit of success,” McVay said.

    THROWING AND CATCHING

In a padded practice that seemed heavily focused on the run game, many of the highlights from Day 4 — for better or worse — came with the ball in the air.
Third-year quarterback Brandon Allen took the majority of snaps on Sunday. Fellow QB Sean Mannion was away from practice for the birth of his child.
Starting quarterback Jared Goff seemed to take fewer snaps on his fourth consecutive day of work in Irvine. The pair combined to throw three interceptions, two of them from Allen.
Following practice, McVay addressed Goff’s passing into Wade Phillips’ newly remodeled secondary.
“I think those windows close up a little bit faster with some of those guys that are on defense. We always talk about reading with your feet and sometimes it’s appropriate to be able to try to fit those in those tight windows and sometimes the coverage dictates, we need to progress and do it a little bit faster manner,” McVay said.
Even though many of the windows slammed shut on his quarterbacks, McVay had good things to say about Goff’s ability to bounce back, and elaborated on just how difficult the quarterback position can be.

“But, what he’s done such a good job of is being receptive where he’s able to kind of – he’s seeing it real well right now. Even whether it be good or bad he’s able to kind of correct himself immediately after,” McVay said. “When you’re looking at 11 bodies on defense, rush is coming at you, different coverages — it’s a lot for a quarterback. I think, really, our group as a whole has done a nice job. But always, always striving to improve.”
While Goff and Allen, throwing in pads for the first time, struggled at times on Sunday against a physical backfield, a few of the Rams’ wide receivers wowed fans with some impressive catches.
Tight end Gerald Everett had undoubtedly the catch of the day during some red-zone work. Everett turned just in time, leaping to snag an Allen pass over his defender.
First-year Ram Brandin Cooks also showed off his hands, reeling in well-paced pass that Cooks bobbled across the middle of the field amidst tight coverage. He then showed off his speed, racing to the end zone for what likely would’ve been a touchdown.

10 Observations from Day 4 of Training Camp

    Myles Simmons

    https://www.therams.com/news/10-observations-from-day-4-of-training-camp

    1) Pads.
The Rams went through their first padded practice of the year on Sunday afternoon, which brought up the energy for the fourth consecutive day of practice. Football season always starts to actually feel like it’s approaching when you can hear the sound of pads popping on the field.
    2) During the individual portion of practice, wide receiver Robert Woods made a nice catch on the left sideline on a pass from quarterback Jared Goff. It was one of those plays where the catch was made against air, so take it with a grain of salt. But it was still a nice display of Woods’ soft hands and athleticism.

    3) After individual drills, Los Angeles moved on to half-field drills with the offense and defense going against one another. The first play was a 4-on-3 scenario, with Goff hitting running back Todd Gurley deep down the seam with what would’ve been a touchdown pass.
    4) Los Angeles had the starting defense up first in 11-on-11 drills and safety John Johnson had the first pad-popping hit of camp. The safety came up and had a nice thud on running back Justin Davis to stuff a run.
    5) Safety Isaiah Johnson also had a nice thud early on in team drills. He came up to hit tight end Gerald Everett, who caught a pass in the flat from quarterback Brandon Allen off of play action. Johnson was right there to make a play for what would’ve been a tackle for loss.
    6) Cory Littleton appears to be developing well into his role of middle linebacker and defensive signal-caller. He crashed down hard inside to hit an inside blocking tight end during 11-on-11 drills, disrupting a run. And a few plays later, he set the edge well on the defense’s right, forcing an end around to cut back inside where another defensive player was waiting for a thud.

    7) Later in practice, Everett made an outstanding catch in the end zone for a touchdown. The tight end went up over a defensive player to make the catch at the front corner of the end zone, using his strong hands to pull the ball in. He secured the ball, maintaining possession as he also got two feet in for a touchdown. The pass came from Allen.
    8) During a two-minute drill, cornerback Marcus Peters nearly intercepted Goff in a ones-vs-ones situation. With Goff facing some pressure while releasing a pass, Peters jumped a route, got his hands on the ball at a high point, but couldn’t reel it in as he came back to the ground. As head coach Sean McVay often says, Peters is certainly someone whose presence the offense can feel on a play-to-play basis.
    9) Goff, however, did connect with wide receiver Cooper Kupp on a pass in the middle of the field to end that segment of practice. Goff did well to step up in the pocket and hit Kupp coming out of his break on his route over the middle. The way the field was set up at the time, the play likely would’ve ended as a touchdown.

    10) Finally, cornerback Kevin Peterson — now sporting No. 25 — made a pair of strong plays, one of which came at the end of practice. Earlier in the session, he nearly intercepted Allen on a pass in 11-on-11. He had nice coverage on his receiver on the defense’s right, leapt, and got his hands on the ball. He just couldn’t reel it in.
He got his interception later, though, making a pick six to end a period. Peterson undercut a route, made the pick on the defense’s left sideline, and had no one in his path on the way to the end zone. It was a nice practice for the Oklahoma State product who intercepted a pair of passes in Week 17 last year.

Beyond Talib, Peters, Roby-Coleman, and Shields, we hear good things so far about Hill and Peterson.

They ain’t keeping 6 corners. Assuming they keep Shields, do they trade Hill or Peterson to someone? Like they did with Gaines last year?

Eventually the Rams will populate the entire rest of the NFL with their DBs.

Outside linebacker Matt Longacre has shown some progress since undergoing season-ending back surgery last December. Longacre participated in individual drills through the first two days of training camp, then took part in four plays of team work on Saturday and six on Sunday. Longacre, who had 5 1/2 sacks as a backup last season, is competing for the starting spot opposite of Samson Ebukam.

10 Observations from Day 5 of Training Camp

    Myles Simmons

    https://www.therams.com/news/10-observations-from-day-5-of-training-camp

    1) Before the first whistle of practice officially blew, punter Johnny Hekker was on the field practicing working on directional kicks to both the right and left sideline. The accuracy and precision with which he was punting the ball to equipment assistants 40-to-50 yards downfield was fairly remarkable — though not entirely surprising from the four-time first-team All-Pro.
    2) Center John Sullivan was back in pads for Monday’s practice. He left Sunday’s session with trainers after sustaining a minor arm injury. Head coach Sean McVay did say following Sunday’s practice that he thought Sullivan would be OK. Sullivan’s presence on the line is a key factor in Los Angeles’ offensive success.

    3) During individual drills, linebackers worked on securing tipped passes for interceptions. Linebackers coach Joe Barry would toss a pass for assistant linebackers coach Chris Shula to tip in the air about five-to-six-yards away. After the deflection, each linebacker would have to catch the pass for a pick.
    4) Also in individual drills, cornerbacks worked on jamming receivers in the red zone. Each corner would line up opposite another in his group posing as a wide receiver. The corner would then have to get his hands on the receiver off the line and react to where a popular goal-line route was going. As one might expect, veteran cornerback Aqib Talib excelled at this particular drill — expertly reading the movements of younger DBs.
    5) That particular cornerbacks drill is relevant because Los Angeles practiced red zone one-on-ones with quarterbacks, wide receivers, and cornerbacks. Notably from the period…
Talib performed well covering wide receiver Robert Woods, blanketing him in coverage to force quarterback Jared Goff into some uncomfortable throws.
Wide receiver Mike Thomas made an outstanding catch on the offense’s left. Goff delivered a back-shoulder throw, Thomas went up, secured the ball, and maintained possession and he hit the ground.
Cornerback Troy Hill and wide receiver Josh Reynolds had two decent battles. On their first rep, Hill batted away a fade route. On their second, Reynolds got the best of the matchup with a solid slant, catching a touchdown.

    6) In a later 11-on-11 period, Goff and Woods connected for what would’ve been a touchdown pass down the seam on the left. Woods was wide open on the play, as there may have been a miscommunication from the scout-team defense.
    7) Talib and fellow cornerback Marcus Peters are always communicating on the field. During one play in 11-on-11 drills against the first-team offense, wide receiver Brandin Cooks got behind the secondary and was open for what would’ve been a long touchdown reception. However, the pass was just a bit overthrown and ended up incomplete. Nevertheless, Talib and Peters stayed in conversation all the way to the sideline to dissect exactly what went wrong, correcting it for the next play.
    8) In a red-zone 11-on-11 period, Goff hit running back Todd Gurley over the middle for a touchdown pass. Not that there was any reason to expect something different, but it’s clear that Gurley will once again be a significant part of Los Angeles’ passing game in 2018.
    JL8_2244
    9) Kicker Greg Zuerlein nailed all six of his attempted field goals on Monday, with the longest coming from 50-yards out. Special teams coordinator John Fassel said following practice that Zuerlein is “full go” after the back injury that landed him on injured reserve late in 2017. Fassel added that Zuerlein is likely “feeling as good as he has in years.”
    10) After five straight days of practices, McVay shortened the length of Monday’s session and used the day’s last period to give younger players time for more 11-on-11 work. These plays didn’t quite feature “live” tackling, but the thudding was noticeable as players were probably trying to make a strong impression before the preseason games even begin.
