I think maybe Coach Boo underestimated the amount of struggle Greg Robinson would have with NFL pass pro. He really needed to NOT be flex and just lock in.
But Coach Boo gets paid the big bucks because he knows about a million times more about OL coaching than me, so I’ll just have to trust that he’s got to take the heat if he’s wrong in making this call.
Here’s what has me a little less concerned. Robinson doesn’t have to start right away. In the Cleveland game, Washington took all his snaps at LOT. At guard, there’s not just Saffold and Joseph, there’s Bond. I think Boudreau is a “sum is greater than the parts” kind of guy, and as long as they are not out there trying to pass without the opposing defense also thinking run the whole time, I really do expect them to get by. I don’t think I put that right. This OL will be okay as long as the D thinks it has to contain the run. If they don’t think that and load up against the pass, it will struggle. I base all this on the 4 games with Richardson from early last year.
Then of course Robinson gets worked in eventually, and it’s fine.
They could run the ball last year in the Seattle home game with Williams at LOG.
Heck early in 2012, they were all beat up, and it was just not good–but even then, they managed to do better than we had any right to expect with a line consisting of Hunter Ojinaka Turner Dahl and Richardson. We have seen worse Rams OLs (see 2007-2009). And that line included 3 guys who are flat out of football. Not just benched (Turner) or injured and so done with (Dahl), but flat out OUT of football.
Boudreau may also just be better with vets. Barksdales, and such.
But if they can run, or at least force the D to contain the run, they ought to be okay.
