Last year all the parts of the secondary played with great anticipation on the way to a #1 ranking.

Now when you ask how or why that happens, I think it starts with preparation in the film room on the part of the players, as well as great gameplanning by the coordinator. Last year Staley did that. Our defense was the best coached and most well prepared unit on the field in the NFL. This year it looks like we have a DC who is learning. Which, btw, should not be a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to his background and experience when paired with the Rams keeping the Fangio scheme.

Also we have some issues with personnel. Or at least it’s close enough to where I don’t know whether it’s mainly Morris or say Rapp. Is it how he’s calling things that aren’t in Rapp’s areas of strength? Or is is just Rapp struggling with the thinking in real time and it’s slowing his effectiveness. No idea.

On the good side, it seems like they are developing Young nicely. This past game is the first game where I actually approved of him starting for us. He made enough splash plays to earn that spot on the field and then some, even with some mistakes (missed tackles, and coverage faux pas).

The DL is playing lights out and looks to be greater than the sum of their parts which is the greatest compliment you can give a coach.

So it’s not like it’s all bad. Rams just have to fix some things and they don’t have time to mess around. In this league teams are going to see what they put up vs Tampa and attack that. Starting this weekend.

Matthew Stafford is one of the best quarterbacks on third down this year. His quarterback rating of 140.2 on third downs this year leads the league.

    3rd down stats:

    T-8th in comp. % – 70.4%
    3rd in yards and YPA – 10.3
    T-2nd in TDs – 3

The NFL defenses who have allowed the most first downs in 2021.

    1. Seahawks (84)
    2. WFT (77)
    3. Chiefs (76)
    4. Dolphins (73
    5. Rams (73)

The only team with a winning record here is the Rams.

Let’s be honest, teams have moved the chains on them this year.

The Bears and Colts blew it in the red zone, but moved all day. Brady had 432 yards against them.

They’ve held when they had to, but to do need to tighten up.

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
The Rams have designated OLB Obo Okoronkwo and OT Tremayne Anchrum for return, after their time on short-term injured reserve. Both have looked solid in working on the side with trainers these last couple weeks.

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams QB Matthew Stafford on the rapport between him and C Brian Allen:

“He’s been great. He thinks like me, which is great. Thinks like the quarterback and he sees things the way I see them. He’s making protection calls as I’m thinking them and saying them.”

Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury is kindly giving the LA beat writers some time this morning. A reporter asked whether it has gotten any easier planning for 3-time DPOY Aaron Donald over these years:

    “No. I wish it did.

    .

Darrell Henderson (ribs) and Leonard Floyd (ankle) DNP. Tutu Atwell (illness) and Robert Rochell (illness) DNP. Andrew Whitworth and Aaron Donald had rest days.

It seems like a matter of time before this comes back to bite the Rams on the butt. I thought for sure that Buccaneers offense would take it to the Rams D for a big win. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Murray, Hopkins and Green have big days this week. I’m still not sold on the run defense either.

    Rams Brothers@RamsBrothers
Three starting offensive lineman for the Cardinals are game-time decisions:
    • LG Justin Pugh – practiced fully yesterday
    • RG Justin Murray- limited
    • RT Kelvin Beachum – DNP

Their starting 5 has been excellent. But having even just 2 of 5 starters out vs. the Rams is shaky.

If Sean Harlow has to come in for Justin Pugh at any time — it’s not going to be good. Wouldn’t be fun to go against AD & co. in your second game ever.

Max Garcia (JM’s back-up) may see some time as well. Could be a reason why the lines moving in favor of the Rams again (-4.5)

These divisional games are primarily won in the trenches. The Cardinals would have a much better shot of beating the Rams in December IF their starting 5 can get fully healthy by then.

Emphasis on the importance of winning in the trenches/at the LOS. Advantage, Rams on paper

Imo Rapp is the biggest reason why Morris will have a hard time continuing to duplicate Staley succes in the offense. JJ > Rapp. Fuller isn’t playing at the same level as last yr either.

The Rams were watching Kupp since 2015, when he was an underclassman All-American receiver and record-setter at FCS school Eastern Washington

A win tomorrow could distance the Rams from the Cardinals. Next four games:

Rams – SEA, NYG, DET, HOU
Cardinals – SF, CLE, HOU, GB

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
The Rams waived safety JR Reed and elevated OLB Obo Okoronkwo from the 21-day window to the active roster, per team.

I hope Brian Allen continues on the trend of good play because man it’s been fun to watch.

From K1SZN2021 (@KSzn2021): Do you see the Cardinals somehow beating the Rams in week 4 to stay undefeated?

If it were in Arizona, I’d think hard about it. But the Rams are playing too well, and that game is at SoFi Stadium. So I’m gonna stick with Matthew Stafford & Co.

The Rams have sacked Kyler Murray 11 times in four games for an average of 2.75 times per game. That number likely won’t go down given Cardinals OL issues heading into Sunday.

Let’s give it up for the defense:

When Aaron Donald and J.J. Watt play one another in Week 4, it will be the first matchup in NFL history where 2 opposing players with 3+ AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Awards face each other

    aeneas1

rams rank 4th in opponent depth of pass average, meaning that teams have been throwing the ball short against the rams, which in turn can make it difficult to put up big qb pressure numbers.

all told, the rams defense also ranks:

    7th – qb rating allowed
13th – yards per pass attempt allowed
    23rd – completion % allowed (bend but don’t break)
    7th – offensive points allowed

If Donald breaks the sack record today, let’s not forget about Deacon Jones who would have 170+ and Jack Youngblood who would have 150+ sacks if the NFL would count these numbers. Donald will have the official record, but remember these two. Three of the all-time greats.

@RamsNFL@AZCardinals play today I’m reminded & grateful for the opportunity each gave me when few believed… and as a dad I’m praying that there are similar ppl out there for my kids (and the many others out there) to give them a similar opportunity to chase their dreams!

#Bucs TE Rob Gronkowski told @JayGlazer that his injury is much worse than what people know: He says he suffered a punctured lung, a broken rib and 4 cracked ribs last week vs. the #Rams. Essentially made it impossible for him to play in a game he desperately wanted to.
