The Rams’ usage of Skowronek — hinted at in various alignments throughout camp, and a noted part of his past in middle school and high school — lent dimension not just to their run game, but also the Falcons still had to account for 11 personnel looks even with the Rams showing 21 personnel pre-snap, because he’s a receiver and could release into various routes. It was completely different than anything the team had done previously under McVay, especially in such volume, and it was so totally 1980s-hair-metal neck-roll–gnarly.

“The Rams had a 28-3 lead with 5:38 left in the third quarter”

    😬

despite the focus here on stafford’s ints, he actually played a great game with the 4th highest qbr rating for the week and the announcers praising him for dropping dimes all day. to me what is concerning is lack of a wr3. skowronek playing fb really didn’t accomplish much of anything, wasn’t really involved in the blocking on the running plays. the next man up mentality isn’t working with the injuries to obj and jefferson. fix, this and the running game (a little better today) and offense will be just fine.

    .

Jourdan Rodrigue: I highly disagree that it didn’t accomplish anything; it changed the way the Falcons played defense/what personnel they deployed and the concepts they were comfortable using on about half of the plays, not to mention what types of pressure they may or may not have been comfortable deploying or how often they may or may not have hesitated on run/pass concepts depending on the alignment. The consideration that every run down could then be a possible pass down is alone in itself a huge consideration/effect on a defensive coordinator. Definitely agree that they miss Jefferson. And I think when you throw 5 INTs in two games it would be irresponsible *not* to mention it in a column but as you’ll see from these 2,000 or so words, it’s not the focal point of the column, but everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions about the relevant points of the game 😊

Jalen Ramsey has seven interceptions since joining the Rams. Five of those interceptions have come in final eight minutes of the fourth quarter. Those final eight minutes are typically the biggest moments of the game.
    .
Stafford ranked 9th in adj. EPA/play yesterday against the Falcons. His EPA + CPOE composite ranked seventh. Much better performance from the Rams QB. Just needs to clean up the turnovers.
    .
The Rams offense was nearly 3x more effective against the Falcons when Ben Skowronek lined up at full back. Is this a package that we could see more of in the offense moving forward?

I loved this call: Skow at FB, Akers at RB. Kupp in motion. Akers picks up the middle block. Screen pass to Higbee opposite side of Skow block/release lane that gets 19. Rams remembering they have more pages of the playbook this week.
    .
Neat how the Rams have been using Brandon Powell, a player who worked his butt off for more offensive opps through camp. He’s been coming out of the backfield aligned opposite the RB and selling some of the under concepts (including that gain to Kupp just now).

Jourdan Rodrigue:  I thought Stafford played well and especially better than last week and got the ball to a lot of guys which is noted here throughout, responsibly as are his INTs. The Rams’ EPA per snap when Skow was at fullback was .23 which is quite the spike to the positive so again, I’m not willing to dismiss the effect that adjustment had even if it’s also true at the same time that they miss Van and also true at the same time that Stafford played well and also true at the same time that he threw two INTs.

Despite a makeshift OL, that was even more makeshift after an injury on the first play, and with Ben Skowronek frequently lining up in the backfield in a three point stance, the Rams had zero offensive penalties against the Falcons

The Rams run defense ranks first in the NFL against the run in DVOA. This is also the case in run defense EPA where the Rams’ -.466 also ranks first.
    .
After ranking 32nd in total defensive DVOA after week 1, the Rams are up to 19th after Week 2. They rank 27th against the pass and 1st against the run.
    .
Justin Hollins has stepped in really nicely opposite Leonard Floyd. Not as effective as a pass rusher, but leads edge rushers in run-stop win-rate. A’Shawn Robinson also ranks fourth among DTs.

Turns out @TremayneAnchrum  actually broke his ankle on the FIRST snap of the game for the Rams O, when he had some players fall on his leg from behind. But he tried to play through it on the second snap before he realised how bad his leg was. What an absolute beast!

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
when the Rams featured Skowronek at FB, their EPA/snap was 0.23. Contextually, their overall offensive EPA/play in Week 2 was 0.13.

You just know Kupp was more proud of that block than any pass he caught

Kendall Blanton has re-signed with the LA Rams. Per his agent.

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
The Rams are bringing back Kendall Blanton, per his agent@kenny_zuckerman. Of their “in-house” TEs*, Blanton has the most game experience (*though was cut in the summer and most recently on KC practice squad). Pretty active couple of days for this group.
    .
I say “in house” here bc he’s about as plug and play in this offense as it gets, even though obviously he was on another PS roster most recently.
    .
Kendall has game experience and the two division games coming up need to be low-risk I’d imagine

Aaron Donald loves the way Greg Gaines and A’Shawn Robinson are playing to start the season. Both are in contract years. “As long as I’m playing this game, I want those guys with me,” said Donald.
