Darious Williams misses the next three games, at least, being the games against the Giants, Lions and Texans. It’s a good time to let him rest and let David Long and Robert Rochell get some extended game time

Rams are 2nd in passing yards but only 18th in pass attempts. They’re also 1st in net yards per attempt. Talk about being efficient

Don’t look now, but the Rams are second in the NFL with 108 pressures on the season (@PFF).

That defensive line is finding a way to step up.

    Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
Rams DL Aaron Donald banged his knee against another player in Seahawks game last Thursday and has some swelling. He is day-to-day, per a Rams spokesman.

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
Sean McVay says he was surprised by the Jon Gruden situation and he hadn’t seen that side of him.

Yes, I know this video piece is about Robert Woods. But it’s hard to overlook the fantastic job that Henderson is doing in Pass Pro. The first clip shows great recognition on his part. Stafford initially directs him to protect the A Gap where the LB is showing blitz. But at the snap, Hendu immediately realizes that it’s a ruse and that the backer is dropping off into coverage. Almost instantaneously, he recognizes that it’s the other LB that’s coming. Henderson is able to get across the line to the B Gap to knock the blitzer off stride. Stafford is able to maneuver a little and deliver a strike to Woody.

    Great play!

The Rams are one of 12 teams to not have a 100-yard rusher this season yet. The Giants meanwhile have allowed three 100-yard rushers this season which is tied for the league most with the Lions and Chargers.

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Sean McVay said it’s possible they elevate a DB from the practice squad in advance of Sunday’s game against the Giants, with Donte Deayon being “a very likely candidate for that.”

    Clem@TheClemReport
Forget about Matt Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Darrell Henderson all running a Sean McVay offense with Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey making plays on defense.

Nothing scares me more as a Giants fan than seeing DeSean Jackson coming into town this Sunday wearing #1.

Reconfigured Rams’ secondary over the next few weeks will be “by committee”, and open window for a few players to expand their roles.

Still wondering why there was no illegal man downfield on the double punt. Anything?

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
The Rams followed up on this quite a bit last week, including with screenshots of various angles sent to the league, a person with knowledge of that process told me, and really were just seeking clarity on how and why the initial call was overturned. For its part, the league believes everything was properly officiated. I’d bet this comes up at league meetings in the offseason, however.

When do you believe this defense will find its identity?

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
This has to be the three-game stretch when they do it, even without Williams. I wrote this week about the explosive plays they’re allowing particularly in the passing game, and certainly without Williams, there will be questions to sort through. But the Rams also faced some of the league’s most explosive teams through their first quarter of the season, so now they’ve got a real chance to put everything together before the crucial month of November.

I don’t know what the rule says, exactly.

Can the linemen release after the punt? Or after the ball travels past the line of scrimmage?

If it’s the former, they were good to go after the first punt.

I think it’s all the fault of the numbers. They should never have allowed such chaos. Keep them the way they’ve been since the time of Sargon of Akkad. Back then, your defensive linemen were in the 70s and 80s, linebackers in the 50s and 60s, DBs in the 20s, 30s and 40s, with rare exceptions. Deviation typically resulted in being thrown to the crocodiles, unless Mrs. Sargon saved you.

Let just anyone wear #1 and you’re going to get double punts and worse.

Good point. Football needs to return to its former discipline.

The more crocodiles you have, the fewer chaotic plays.

How are Rams planning to solidify their defense, which is clearly missing the presence of several vets that they decided not to resign??

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
Not privy to those plans, but I do expect better results are ahead.

Saying nothing ill of those who left (I’d love to have them back!), but as a bit of perspective, here are PFF position grades for those key departures:
    J Johnson 72nd
    T Hill 61st
    M Brockers 84th
    M Fox 64th

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
Wrapping up weekly deep dive. I really don’t see anything preventing Rams from taking a leap in scoring. They’ve been great in almost every dimension. All position groups thriving. Hitting explosives.

Feels like they’re fine tuning. Just need (a) red zone & (b) shorter fields.

Updated list of relevant Matthew Stafford rankings after 5 games with Rams.

    DVOA (1)
    Sack% (1)
    DYAR (2)
    QBR (2)
    AY/A (2)
    Rating(3)
    EPA (6)
    TD%(6)
    PFF (16)
    INT% (16)
