    Rams tag Joyner

Kind of expected. Not sure how hard teams are trying to re-sign their own players yet. The combine just wrapped up and the free agency sweepstakes begins next week. I hope we can sign both Joyner and Watkins and others to long(ish)-term deals.

While I think this is the smarter move, I think it will probably cost them Watkins. Somebody is going to pay him more than the Rams will. Maybe the 49ers who have a lot of cap room and no WRs for Garapalo to throw to.

i think it was the right move.

when the rams traded for watkins, i was excited. i even posted a comp between watkins’ first three seasons and jones’ first three seasons. they were similar.

but now you got a receiver who, after four seasons, has only one 1000 yard season. one team gave him away for a second rounder. a second team has let him go without tagging him. i don’t know what mcvay’s input was on who got tagged, but i have to believe he had a strong say. a guy who knows offense. knows what his offense and his qb needs. decides not to tag him.

i don’t know. i still hope the rams’ re-sign watkins. he obviously has value. but maybe watkins didn’t get the franchise tag cuz he’s not worth number one receiver money. maybe the rams have faith that reynolds can fill a void or maybe the front office refuses to overpay him.

we’ll see. if mcvay is ok with this, then i put faith in mcvay. if there’s some inkling that this was done against mcvay’s wishes, then i might have to rethink this.

There’s a very good chance they can’t keep both. It’s also fairly evident they are devoting this year to getting the defense into shape. The way I see it, McVay isn’t having this foisted on him, he’s obviously part of the decision, so if he is in on risking Watkins to keep Joyner, that must be to him the lesser of 2 evils or the better choice in a tough decision … something like that.
