Brandin Cooks signs five-year extension with Rams

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000940666/article/brandin-cooks-signs-fiveyear-extension-with-rams

Brandin Cooks appears to have found his home.

The wide receiver signed a five-year extension with the Los Angeles Rams, the team announced on Tuesday.

“Brandin Cooks has shown himself to be a class act on and off the field since the first day he joined our team,” Rams coach Sean McVay said in a statement released by the team. “He’s a proven professional in this league and signing him to a long-term contract was always our goal. We’re excited to keep Brandin in a Rams uniform through 2023.”

Cooks joined the Rams via trade, with the New England Patriots sending the speedy receiver to Los Angeles during the offseason.

Around The NFL will have more on this story shortly.

16 M a year is the going rate for WR 2nd contracts in 2018.

It’s what the Rams wouldn’t, and the Chiefs did, pay Watkins.

Good for Cooks cause he could have gotten more as a FA in 2019.

Important to note, #Rams Brandin Cooks turns 25 in September. To have him locked up for five years as he prepares to enter his prime years is not insignificant

It’s actually the next six years as he’ll play this year under original rookie deal

Also important to note, recent deals for Jarvis Landry and Sammy Watkins made it pretty clear where the WR market stood and the high franchise tag in place after this season. #Rams are pleased to have gotten the Brandin Cooks deal squared away ASAP

This is the first contract the Rams have done, since they moved, that I like. When I look at where salaries are headed, I think this is a bit in the Rams favor. I would rather pay this to Cooks, than Watkins. imo

Contractually, the @RamsNFL now have @brandincooks @robertwoods @CooperKupp (and @J_Rey_11) in Horns for at least the next three seasons. That’s a tremendous corps. #LARams

Guess we don’t have to worry about that first round pick going to “waste” anymore, right?

    Evan Lazar@ezlazar
Brandin Cooks is worth the deal the #Rams gave him but he was never seeing $16M per year from the #Patriots. Just not how they do business outside of QB.

    Joel Corry@corryjoel
The real question is how much Brandin Cooks has fully guaranteed at signing. Mike Evans leads WRs at $38.258M. DeAndre Hopkins has $36.5M. Julio Jones is at $35.5M & Jarvis Landry got $34M.

    Ryan Kartje@Ryan_Kartje
Meanwhile, McVay is effusive in his praise for Cooks from Day 1. Les Snead says he hopes his son grows up to be like Cooks. And the Rams handed Cooks a huge, long-term deal. Interesting juxtaposition.

FWIW, Sammy Watkins was signed by the Chiefs to a 3-year, $48 million contract this offseason. $30 million was guaranteed.

Brandin Cooks is only 24 years old. He will still be in his late 20’s when his new contract expires. He’s tallied 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in each of his last three seasons. I’m in the camp that believes he’ll fit like a glove in McVay’s offense.

    Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
Brandin Cooks had been set to play this season for approximately $8.5 million, under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. I’m told the team, in re-signing Cooks, moved some of that money around to create short-term flexibility, but not a ton of it.

Brandin Cooks said he knew as soon as he got into the Rams’ building, after the trade, that he wanted to stay with the Rams. Very comfortable.

Brandin Cooks on the Rams: “Even before I got here, you saw something special going on with this team, with the coach and a great owner and the teammates that I’m involved with now. It’s a young culture that is very energetic and has something going on.”

    Joe Curley@vcsjoecurley
“I just came in… and wanted to learn the culture and buy in to that… It was all about coming in, meeting the new coach, meeting the new guys and coming together as one, showing them that I’m here to help them win.”

    Vincent Bonsignore@DailyNewsVinny
Cooks has been the (much) more productive player to Watkins Teams will account for him just as much. If not, well…

They get a pick back for losing Sammy and Trumaine. A lot of people believe Brandin Cooks is a much better fit.

The major motivation in trading for Cooks, and giving up a first-round pick in the process, was Rams’ confidence in being able to sign him long term. One way or the other, they’ll have Goff, Gurley, Woods, Kupp and Cooks under control for several years. That’s darn good.

The #Rams signed WR Brandin Cooks to a 5-year extension worth $81M, source said. $16.2M yearly average in new money. He gets $50.5M guaranteed for injury — $20.5M fully guaranteed at signing

    Albert Breer@AlbertBreer
His new money APY of $16.2 million puts Cooks fourth among receivers, behind Antonio Brown, Mike Evans and DeAndre Hopkins.

Cooks: It’s ‘Beyond Special’ to Sign Extension with Rams

    Myles Simmons

    https://www.therams.com/news/cooks-it-s-beyond-special-to-sign-extension-with-rams

It’s been a pretty big July for Brandin Cooks.
The Rams wide receiver married his wife, Bri, on July 7. Then the newly minted Mr. and Mrs. Cooks took a couple weeks to celebrate their union with a honeymoon.
They had even more reason to celebrate on Tuesday, as Cooks signed a five-year extension with the Rams, keeping him under contract in Los Angeles through the 2023 NFL season.
“I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and just extremely thankful,” Cooks told therams.com. “I would say first and foremost marrying my best friend, that being a highlight of this past month. And then now being able to sign a contract to make this home, I think, is beyond special and speaks volumes to the team on how much they believe in me. And I just want to do everything I can to prove them right.”

After being traded in each of the past two offseasons, Cooks said he and his wife wanted to be in a place where they could settle down. Just after signing his new deal on Tuesday, the wideout noted it didn’t take long to realize the Rams and L.A. added up to the perfect spot.
“I think when you look at it, at this place — even before I was here — you sense something special going on with coach [Sean] McVay and what he’s building and this team and the young energy that’s here. And when I got here for OTAs and offseason workouts, there was a no brainer that this is the place I want to make home for the rest of my career,” Cooks said. “You’ve got guys on the offensive side with our O-line, and our running backs, and our receiving corps — I think we mesh so well, it’s a no-brainer for a guy who wants to have a successful career to want to be here.”
Head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Jared Goff were in the building as Cooks signed his deal — a gesture Cooks called emblematic of how the organization emphasizes togetherness and family.
“I think it tells you about this team. When your head coach is here and your quarterback is here to support you at a time like this, I think that’s what family’s all about,” Cooks said. “And we’re building that family bond, and it shows that they’re accepting me into this culture and into this family right away — and their belief in me.”
And though Cooks has played with two of best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL in Drew Brees and Tom Brady, he’s excited about the opportunity to grow with a young signal-caller like Goff.
“The guy, he’s young and he’s already done what he’s done. So it’s crazy to think about what his potential is and where he’s going,” Cooks said. “And I’ve been blessed to play with two great quarterbacks. And so to be able to come with Jared and to actually have a long time with him, it’s exciting because now we can actually connect and build that rapport for years to come.”
Through four NFL seasons, Cooks has recorded 3,943 yards receiving on 280 catches with 27 touchdowns. While he acknowledged signing an extension before playing a snap for L.A. is somewhat of a unique situation, Cooks is choosing to believe that in a similarly unique light.
“Not playing a snap here, it just makes me want to go that much harder to [validate] their belief in me the way that they do,” Cooks said. “To be able to get this done before taking a snap in a game shows me a lot, and makes me more motivated to just go out there and be the best I can possibly be and be grateful to my teammates.”
There’s just over a week until Los Angeles reports for training camp, and Cooks is ready to get back on the field — especially now that the deal is done.
“I’m excited for training camp to get here so we can get started,” Cooks said. “Right now, it’s that time you’re getting the itch — like, ‘I want to play football.’ So as soon as camp comes — I can’t wait for that, to get that going, and to get into the season, and to be around our fans, and turn this place up.”

I’m happy about this. It’s interesting, at least it is interesting to me, that after seeing Watkins for one year the Rams wouldn’t give him that kind of money, but they will give it to Cooks before he plays a down for them. Again, I’m happy about this extension so this isn’t a criticism.

Rams sign receiver Brandin Cooks to 5-year contract extension

    RICH HAMMOND

    link: https://www.dailynews.com/2018/07/17/rams-sign-receiver-brandin-cooks-to-5-year-contract-extension/

Brandin Cooks made two major commitments this month, one with a ring and one with a pen.

Cooks got married and then took the Rams, for richer and certainly not for poorer. Cooks, one of the NFL’s speediest receivers and a consistent 1,000-yard producer, signed a five-year contract extension on Tuesday, a deal worth approximately $80 million that will expire after the 2023 season.

That’s a major move, given Cooks has yet to play a down for the Rams. They acquired him from New England in April for first- and sixth-round draft picks. Cooks had been set to play this season under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract and could have become an unrestricted free agent next March.

There’s mutual affection. The Rams believe Cooks can be the hinge to their offense as a high-volume, deep-ball threat, and Cooks said he instantly felt comfortable with his new surroundings.

“Even before I got here, you saw something special going on with this team,” Cooks said in a conference call, “with the coach and a great owner and the teammates that I’m involved with now. It’s a young culture that is very energetic and has something going on. When I got here, it was all just about buying into that culture. I think that feeling was kind of generated right away when I got into the building.”

The No. 20 overall pick of the 2014 draft by New Orleans, Cooks had been set to make approximately $8.5 million this season, but a small portion of that money now will be spread to future years. As part of the extension, Cooks received $20.5 million in guaranteed money and his average salary will be approximately $16 million per season.

Cooks, who turns 25 in September, should be an important component of the Rams’ offense this season. He has totaled more than 1,000 yards in each of his past three seasons and also has 27 touchdowns in 58 regular-season games.

“Brandin Cooks has shown himself to be a class act on and off the field since the first day he joined our team,” Rams coach Sean McVay said in a statement provided by the team. “He’s a proven professional in this league and signing him to a long-term contract was always our goal.”

Cooks is expected to be a prime target for quarterback Jared Goff as part of a Rams offense that scored the second-most points in the NFL last season, and Cooks could add a new dimension.

In 2017, the Rams spread around the ball with amazing evenness. Running back Todd Gurley led the team in receptions with 64, followed by Cooper Kupp (62), Robert Woods (56) and Sammy Watkins (39).

The Rams continue to value that balance but believe they have something special in Cooks, who has been a 1,000-yard receiver in each of his three full NFL seasons, after being a part-time player as rookie due to injury.

In essence, the Rams hope Cooks fulfills the promise that Watkins seemed to hold a year ago,

Last August, the Rams traded a second-round pick and cornerback E.J. Gaines for Watkins, whom they believed would be a highly productive outside receiver. Watkins struggled to find a place in the Rams’ offense and totaled only 593 yards but did thrive in the red zone, with eight touchdowns.

The Rams hope that Cooks will be more consistent than Watkins, be productive on his own and also open up space on the field for his fellow receivers and Gurley.

The only issue about Cooks is that, at age 24, he already is with his third NFL team. New Orleans traded him after his third season, and after some strife about how many times Cooks was targeted. New England gave up a first-round pick to get Cooks for one season, then flipped him to the Rams rather than sign him to a long-term extension.

Thus far, the new relationship is thriving. McVay raved about Cooks during the Rams’ offseason program, and General Manager Les Snead said in April that he would be pleased “if my son could grow up to be half as respected as” Cooks.

Cooks said his quick comfort level with the Rams made it easy for him to agree to a new contract.

“I just wanted to come in and learn the culture and buy into that and let everything else take care of itself,” Cooks said. “Once they brought (an extension) up, that’s when we got involved, but at the end of the day, it was all about coming in and meeting the new coach, meeting the new guys and coming together as one and showing them that I’m here to help them win and be the best teammate I can be.”

Reaching a new deal with Cooks brings multiple benefits to the Rams, who not only have a No. 1 receiver locked up through his prime years but also have increased clarity about their salary-cap future. The Rams still need to sign star defensive lineman Aaron Donald to a new contract, and now they have a better idea of how much they could afford to pay Donald over the next few seasons.

Also, Cooks’ future is secure, both professionally and personally. He signed his new contract just weeks after he married his fiancee, Bri, in Portland, near the end of a busy offseason.

“The highlight was marrying my best friend,” Cooks said. “It’s been an amazing month, a blessing.”

I keep hearing that. And although Hammond didn’t phrase it as a criticism, I’ve seen some that have. I don’t get that.

Let’s say that instead of trading for him this year, they signed him as a free agent next year. If they did, as with all FA signings, that issue wouldn’t even come up. Well. What’s the difference? A 5th year trade you sign longterm, v. a 6th year FA you sign longterm. Either way he hasn’t played for you. Only apparently there are questions about doing it one way and not the other? (?)

Plus of course if they didn’t sign him they would risk losing a 1st round pick on a one-year rental.

I think Watkins is a little more talented. The knock on Cook is that he isn’t a nifty runner nor is he good at catching passes in traffic, battling for balls, etc. Supposedly he became expendable in New England because he’s not good at catching passes underneath the LBs, which is where Brady likes to throw the most.

But he is very fast and can get open over the top which is what MCVay is looking for. And, unlike Watkins, he’s not injury prone. Also unlike Watkins, he’s been one of the most productive WRs since he’s been in the league. Mannion played with him in college and says he’s really bright.

Explaining the Rams’ decision to immediately lock up Cooks.

Much to the surprise of Rams fans patiently waiting for the team to lock up reigning Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald on a blockbuster deal, Los Angeles just inked newcomer Brandin Cooks to a five-year, $81 million contract extension before he’s even taken a snap for the team.

“Brandin Cooks has shown himself to be a class act on and off the field since the first day he joined our team,” head coach Sean McVay said in a statement. “He’s a proven professional in this league and signing him to a long-term contract was always our goal.”

    Wow!

My surprise isn’t a dismissal of Cooks’ talents as a frontline receiver, but I’m a little shocked his new team made such a hefty commitment before his debut season in L.A. Despite racking up three 1,000-yard campaigns and 27 touchdowns — while averaging 14.1 yards per catch — during his first four NFL seasons, Cooks hasn’t put up a yard for the Rams. We aren’t exactly sure how he’ll fit into this scheme, which has already posted big numbers without a household name on the perimeter. Now, that’s not a slight to Robert Woods or Cooper Kupp, but neither is necessarily regarded as an A-level playmaker. The team’s passing game is more systematic than player-driven.

That said, the system does call for a speed receiver with fine route-running ability and catch-and-run skills. After Sammy Watkins’ departure, the team needed a long-term solution in this area. That’s ultimately why the Rams valued Cooks at a premium, despite only having seen him perform in offseason workouts.

“Cooks is a more complete player than Watkins,” a Rams official told me. “He is a better route runner and he has a little more position flexibility. … He gives us an opportunity to create more mismatches on the perimeter. That should lead to more points.”

To that point, Cooks has been miscast by some observers as a one-trick (field-stretching) pony. When I look at the tape, I see a legitimate WR1 with big-time playmaking ability in an offensive scheme with a history of elevating playmakers (see: DeSean Jackson under McVay in Washington). Cooks has 20 receptions of 40-plus yards in his brief career, including 18 over the past three seasons. That’s the kind of production that catches defensive coordinators’ attention and leads to fewer defenders in the box. Great news for Todd Gurley. In addition, Cooks’ presence on the perimeter should prevent opponents from squeezing Woods and Kupp with exotic coverage tactics. This will enable Jared Goff to continue stringing together completions on easy throws to his No. 2 and No. 3 receivers at short and intermediate range.

But how do the Rams plan to negotiate with Gurley and Donald after tossing this chunk o’ change at Cooks? Well, remember, the Rams have a Pro Bowl quarterback playing on a cheap rookie deal, which frees up significant cap dollars to lock up emerging stars on the team.

As the Rams look to dominate the NFC with their version of the “Big Three” (Goff, Gurley and Cooks), the decision to immediately lock up their new pass catcher could prove to be quite a wise investment when we look back at the move in a few years.
