Rams are underdogs for first time all season vs. Saints in NFC championship
By: Cameron DaSilva | 46 minutes agoThe Los Angeles Rams are heading back to the Superdome. With the New Orleans Saints beating the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, it sets up a rematch between the Rams and Sean Payton’s squad in the NFC championship.
With the game being in New Orleans and the Saints being the higher seed, it’s no surprise that they’re the favorites in this one. According to USA TODAY odds, the Rams opened as 3.5-point underdogs. This is the first time the Rams haven’t been favored all season, as they were 1.5-point favorites over New Orleans back in Week 9.
The over/under is set at 57.5 points, which is the same as Chiefs-Patriots in the AFC championship.
The Saints beat the Rams back in Week 9 by 10 points, winning 45-35 at home. These two teams are very evenly matched, which should make for a great conference championship.
Add in the Rams’ new run-first approach that landed them in this game and there will be no shortage of storylines in New Orleans.

ParticipantSome differences from this game as opposed to the last game,
– Aquib Talib did not play, so I expect he will be one-on-one with Michael Thomas.
-CJ Anderson is now with us. We now have more of a running attack. The new Thunder and Lightning.
– This is where you can add onWe need to contain the Saints offense. We need to tackle better. We need Marcus Peters not to commit a 15 yard personal foul penalty. OK, no stupid penalties on our side. Just saying.

ModeratorAll I know is, if the Rams lose this game, Marcus Peters will have had a hand in it.

ModeratorI don’t see the Rams matching up with the Saints in New Orleans. Against Dallas, they said we will take out Elliott and dare Prescott to beat us. That ain;t gonna work this time.

ParticipantWe need to cause one more turnover than they do.
And, limit the amount of cute calls in the red zone.

ParticipantI have some hope that Talib will keep him in check.
I will be very surprised if they bring Peters back next year unless suddenly a switch turns on for him and he stops making stupid coverage decisions.

ModeratorFun Fact: This year’s Championship games will have the number one age differential in starting QBs (Brady/Mahomes), and the number two age differential (Brees/Goff) of all time. In the Top Five age differentials prior to this year, all five were won by the older QB.

What’s up with the Saints OL?
Our entire OL (except Unger) was on the injury report and this past game was the first time they all started since like Week 11. Its the playoffs so everyone tightened up but its not the same line that was handling people earlier in the year.
LT Armstead is playing with a torn pec. He made it through the game yesterday which was important but he’s not 100%,
LG Andrus Peat broke his hand in Week 17. He had surgery during the bye week and played yesterday. He struggled – 4 penalties and generally got pushed back. We have a tough choice there – our backup Gs are just OK but if he’s going to be a liability, might give someone else a try.
RG Warford has a knee injury.
RT Ramczyk has a shoulder injury.
Everyone has injuries, etc, but we are dealing with a lot there[

MRI confirms Sheldon Rankins has torn Achilles; Andrus Peat played with broken hand
Mike Triplett
ESPN Staff WriterMETAIRIE, La. — An MRI confirmed that New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins suffered a torn Achilles on Sunday, a source told ESPN. The former first-round NFL draft pick is expected to have surgery this week.
Also, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Saints left guard Andrus Peat played Sunday despite suffering a broken hand in Week 17 and having surgery during the bye week. Peat had four penalties (including two holding calls) in the Saints’ 20-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, but he played every snap in the Saints’ divisional-round win, and teammates credited him for his toughness. Peat had suffered a broken fibula in last year’s playoffs.
“He’s resilient, man. He’s a fighter,” said Saints left tackle Terron Armstead — who himself returned Sunday from a torn pectoral. “Andrus has been dealing with a lot. We all have. That’s kind of the beauty of our team, that we don’t let adversity get to us.
“The way he’s been able to fight back and play, he’s been great for us.”
As for Rankins, his loss is a significant blow to a Saints defense that ranked second in the NFL in run defense this year — and now has to face the Los Angeles Rams’ new dynamic duo of Todd Gurley and C.J. Anderson in the NFC Championship Game.
Rankins, the 12th pick in the 2016 draft, out of Louisville, had a breakout year in his third season with eight sacks, 15 quarterback hits, 12 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. He had started 44 straight games, including the playoffs after returning from a broken leg he suffered in his first NFL preseason in 2016.
The Saints have decent depth at defensive tackle, though, with third-year backup David Onyemata and undrafted rookie Taylor Stallworth likely to take on bigger roles now.
“We’ve been playing pretty decent, we’ve been playing pretty good the past couple of weeks and all that. So, it’s just having the guys step up and be ready to take on a bigger role, you know?” Onyemata told reporters Monday.
Saints defensive end Alex Okafor suffered a torn Achilles of his own last season and has bounced back nicely for the Saints this season.
“When he went down, I saw what he was holding, saw the way his leg was, the way his foot was turned. I had a feeling that was it, but I didn’t want to expect the worst,” Okafor told reporters of Rankins on Sunday night. “When I came back in here and I heard the news, I was devastated, man. Achilles injuries aren’t what they used to be — they aren’t career-enders. They’re just a little bump in the road. I know he’ll be alright.
“He still has the best ball in front of him just because of the dude he is.”
The news of Rankins’ torn Achilles tendon was first reported by the New Orleans Advocate.

ModeratorI am afraid that Peters will do something to lose the game.
He’s just so emotional. I’m afraid Payton will be able to bait him, ie get him to bite on a double move, etc.

ModeratorI got to thinking…you know, the Rams haven’t lost a NFC Championship game in almost 30 years. That’s a pretty good run when you think about it. I see no reason why that shouldn’t continue this weekend.

Hmmm, but were the older QBs this old? Over 40? I hope the Rams can get push up the middle and swallow up Brees, keep the ball away from Thomas and take your chances with the other guys.
