Rams release LB Mark Barron, save $6.33 million
The Los Angeles Rams are on their way to clearing cap space before the new league year begins. After declining John Sullivan’s 2019 option, the Rams have now released linebacker Mark Barron.
The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and confirmed by Vincent Bonsignore of The Athletic.
A pre-free-agency surprise: Rams released starring inside LB Mark Barron, per league sources.

Can confirm that the #Rams will be releasing ILB Mark Barron.

Barron’s release isn’t much of a surprise. He really struggled for the Rams last season after coming back from a lingering Achilles injury suffered in 2017. He stepped up in the playoffs and had eight tackles in the Super Bowl, but the bulk of his 2018 season was sub-par.
By releasing Barron, the Rams save $6.3 million, according to Over The Cap. He was set to have a cap hit of $9.667 million in 2019, but Los Angeles will now only have to pay $3.33 million in dead money. Combine that with the $7.25 million they saved by moving on from Sullivan and they’ve created $13.5 million in cap space with just two moves.
FYI on John Sullivan: #Rams get back all $6.25m in cap space and a $1m salary cap credit. So basically $7.25m in not picking up his option. Mark Barron saves $6.33 so essentially #Rams created $13.5m in space created today

Of course, they’re now left with two holes at starting center and inside linebacker. Brian Allen is expected to replace Sullivan, but the Rams could be searching for Barron’s replacement in free agency or the draft.
The timing of the move is obvious as Barron was owed a $3 million roster bonus on March 15, which forced the Rams to make this decision now rather than later.
Barron finished the 2018 season with 60 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and a safety. He spent the last five years with the Rams after being acquired in a trade with the Buccaneers for a fourth- and sixth-round pick.
$5,534,505 -(7 x $495,000) = $2,069,000
Right now we only count 51 players against the Salary Cap. Later we will count 53. that will and another 2 x $495,000 = $990,000
Practice Squad of 10 players for games equals, 2019 Practice Squad Weekly Pay: $8,000.00 ($136,000 if on all 17 weeks) x 10 = $1,360,000.
$2,069,000 – draft pool
$990,000 – 51-53
$1,360,000 – practice squad
~$5,000,000 – Injured Reserve
—————–
$9,419,000 yearly expenses
.
Usins Spotrac numbers: $29,126,386 – $9,419,000 + $6,330,000 = ~ $26 million effective Cap Space with the cutting of Sullivan and Barron. imo
Add $2 million for mistake on Sullivan. ~$28 million effective cap.- This topic was modified 5 years, 8 months ago by Agamemnon.

I think they will keep Brockers. He can play nose or DE.
March 7, 2019 at 2:11 pm #98621Billy_TParticipantI hope Brockers takes Suh’s spot, but adds some weight in the off-season. I think he played too slim last year.
I’m also hoping they draft Dexter Lawrence from Clemson, and work him into the rotation. He’s my first choice for #31, with Brian Burns being the second. Unfortunately, it may well be that both players are already gone.
I’ll be disappointed if they go Safety or Center there, unless the players at those spots are the obvious BPA/value. Would rather they fix those issues via FA, though.
Want the Rams to get lucky and find an elite-level DT or Edge. IMO, the draft is the best way to get there and, generally speaking, the least costly.

I doubt Lawrence or Burns drops to us. I like Burns myself, because he play Inside and Outside LB.
March 7, 2019 at 9:47 pm #98626InvaderRamModeratoryeah. i think burns unfortunately will be long gone.
lawrence has a chance of dropping due to the positive test result.
