Xavier Jones looks a lot more comfortable and ready to contribute than Jake Funk. Funk got all the offseason hype it felt like, but Jones is the clear-cut RB2 IMO right now and it’s not close.HoldenCantor@HoldenCantor

The thing personnel people kept saying about smaller-school product Chris Garrett when they drafted him in the seventh round was, “he just needs to get some time in against better players”. Has all the tools. That series was after 4 weeks against better players.Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry

Hope Bryce Perkins didn’t play himself out of Los Angeles (in a good way) over the past 8 days. That was a blast, and the 24yo showed a lot of moxie. Would love to see him stay in the organization.Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Bryce Perkins will do whatever it takes, man. Gotta appreciate that from an undrafted free agent QB, who didn’t even get to run much of the scout team last year. Impressive game from him tonight – obviously some throws he will want back but some really promising stuff here.…
Can the Rams really afford to cut Bryce Perkins after the potential he showed against the Raiders? https://t.co/3xVucY56cn

Sean McVay said RB Raymond Calais (ankle/foot) will need surgery. OL Tremayne Anchrum Jr. had his ankle rolled up on, but McVay said he thinks he is okay.Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
Rams WR Tutu Atwell is down on the field being tended to by the training staff. It’s reasonable after two preseason games to be concerned about Atwell’s durability in the NFL. He’s 5-9 and 155 pounds.
Sosa Kremenjas@QBsMVP
Tutu Atwell already injured the left side of his torso and his ankle in this game and has been blasted like another 5 times.I got no clue how this dude is gonna last.
Cornell@gqscholar
He finished the game, what the issue? T Lewis is huge and he can’t even stay healthy enough to get on the field, despite his size.Keiyon Monroe@ramsfanatic81
I agree with talib. I have no clue how tutu gets in the field based on what I’ve seen. He’s not bad but he not even a better runner with the football than Robert woods on sweeps. Already didn’t love the pick so at this point dude better show out at punt returnerClash Of The Horns 0-0@RamfamPodcaster

Jake Funk has some burst. 0-60 in a hurryAugust 22, 2021 at 9:05 am #131644znModeratorStuds and duds from Rams’ loss to Raiders: Bryce Perkins and Chris Garrett shine
* https://theramswire.usatoday.com/lists/rams-raiders-best-worst-players-preseason/
The preseason is more about players developing and coaches learning about their team than it is about winning and losing. The Rams are certainly trying to look at it that way after losing their second straight preseason game, falling 17-16 to the Raiders on Saturday night.
There were a bunch of standout players for the Rams despite the loss, however. Bryce Perkins and Chris Garrett were two guys who really shined against the Raiders on each side of the ball, nearly helping lift the Rams to victory in dramatic fashion.
Here are our studs and duds from Saturday’s loss at SoFi Stadium.
Stud: Chris Garrett
Garrett was an absolute monster against the Raiders. On one second-quarter drive alone, he had a 6-yard tackle for a loss, a tipped pass at the line, split a sack with Jonah Williams and had a strip-sack on third down. He also hit the quarterback a couple of drives later, hurrying him into a bad throw. The Division II product had a huge game at the perfect time, catching the eye of the coaching staff as he battles for a roster spot.Stud: Bryce Perkins
Perkins played the entire game at quarterback over Duck Hodges, and deservedly so. He helped carry the Rams offense, especially late in the game, making key plays with his legs down the stretch. He also showed off impressive accuracy and decision-making, going through his reads and allowing his receivers to make plays. His run on fourth down in the red zone with under two minutes to play was especially impressive, avoiding a sack and picking up the first. He then hit Jacob Harris for a touchdown with 14 seconds to play, but the two-point attempts failed.Stud: J.R. Reed
Reed simply finds the football, especially in coverage. In the first half alone, he made one tackle, broke up a pass and picked off another. Reed is particularly good in man coverage when matched up on tight ends, forcing the quarterback to throw into tight windows. His interception was the result of Garrett tipping the pass at the line, but he made a great play on his other pass breakup covering an out-breaking route by the tight end.
Stud: Tremayne Anchrum
It wasn’t a perfect night from the second-year player, but he looked good at right tackle before getting hurt in the third quarter. He was called for illegal use of hands and holding, but Anchrum held up well against the Raiders’ edge rushers. It’s unfortunate that he got hurt, since he was one of the Rams’ best offensive linemen in this game.Stud: JuJu Hughes
Hughes looks so comfortable out there in the secondary. On the first drive, he broke on a pass to the outside, nearly intercepting it on third down after undercutting the receiver. He then made a nice tackle in the red zone on Derek Carrier after the tight end made a catch in the flat, tackling him for only a 2-yard gain.Stud: Ernest Jones
Jones was all over the field in the first half, making five tackles relatively quickly to lead the team at halftime. He made a good tackle in the hole early on, then ranged toward the sideline on an outside run by the Raiders. Jones doesn’t look like the game is too fast for him as he transitions from college to the NFL, which is a great sign for the rookie.Stud: Jake Funk
Funk was the Rams’ best running back tonight. He started the game and showed some great burst through the hole, playing with good decisiveness when reading his blockers. He had runs of 12 yards, 14 yards and 19 yards throughout the game, totaling 56 yards on the night. He was also rock solid in pass protection, at one point picking up a blitz to allow Perkins to take a deep shot to Tutu Atwell down the left side.Stud: Matt Gay
For the first time since high school, Gay handled punting duties after the Rams placed both Johnny Hekker and Corey Bojorquez on the reserve/COVID-19 list before the game. He looked comfortable in the role, averaging 42 yards per punt. He also made a field goal, an extra point and booted all three of his kickoffs for touchbacks. In a difficult spot, Gay stepped up. He did have a field goal blocked, however.Stud: J.J. Koski
Koski was Bryce Perkins’ Cooper Kupp in this game, consistently getting open on third down in the middle of the field. He caught eight passes for 61 yards, picking up multiple first downs despite never really breaking off a big play. It’s hard to say he’s going to make the team, but Koski is at least pushing to stick around on the practice squad.Dud: Bobby Evans
Evans was called for holding on what would’ve been a third-down conversion early in the game, looked overmatched by the Raiders’ interior rushers and allowed a free runner in the third quarter after not blocking anyone on a key third-down play. It’s becoming clear that the reason the Rams inserted Brian Allen at center and moved Austin Corbett to guard is the play of Evans. He’s not ready to start yet, struggling against the Raiders’ backups.Dud: Raymond Calais
Calais didn’t get many opportunities to contribute in this one, especially considering he got hurt in the third quarter on a screen pass that was called back due to a penalty on Brycen Hopkins. Calais carried it three times for 5 yards and muffed a punt, which didn’t officially count because of a questionable penalty on the Raiders that didn’t hinder his ability to field the punt.Dud: Donovan Olumba
Olumba is fighting for a roster spot but he didn’t help himself on Saturday night. He didn’t make any plays in coverage and was beat badly by Marcell Ateman for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, biting on a double move. His chances of making the team just went down because of his performance against the Raiders.August 22, 2021 at 9:07 am #131645znModeratorRams’ Bryce Perkins, running backs show more in loss to Raiders
* https://www.dailynews.com/2021/08/21/rams-ground-game-shows-more-against-the-raiders/
INGLEWOOD — The Rams expected to have Bryce Perkins and Duck Hodges split time in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Raiders, as the candidates for the team’s third quarterback job did last week against the Chargers.
But after Perkins started the game, he wouldn’t stop.
Allowed to go all the way at SoFi Stadium, he gave the Rams everything but a victory. Perkins’ two-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jacob Harris brought them within a point with 15 seconds to go. But a pass for two points fell incomplete.
The Rams are 0-2 after losing to the Raiders 17-16 in front of 68,834 (tickets distributed).
“It feels good,” Perkins said of his own performance. “You kind of get a rhythm and things seemed to click on that drive. I just wish we could have come up with that last one.”
Perkins accounted for 56 yards passing and 18 scrambling on the 76-yard final drive, running to convert a third-and-6, a fourth-and-1 and a fourth-and-5 play.
He finished with 208 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 26-for-39 passing, plus 41 yards on nine carries.
With starting quarterback Matthew Stafford and second-stringer John Wolford sitting out preseason games along with most Rams regulars, Perkins is competing to serve on the Rams practice squad for a second year or to impress another team that might pick him up.
“Unbelievable job, just battling throughout,” said Rams coach Sean McVay, who left Perkins in to see if he could bounce back from an interception, and then saw him build momentum. “It’s exciting. I was really pleased just with his poise, his command and composure throughout the course of the game tonight.”
It was exciting, too, for Rams running back Xavier Jones, who might be Perkins’ best friend on the team.
“Just seeing him get in that rhythm and lead us down there was incredible,” Jones said. “I had complete confidence in him. I knew he could make plays.”
Jones liked his own performance, too, as he and rookie Jake Funk showed evidence that one or the other can handle the role of No. 2 running back behind Darrell Henderson.
Jones showed moves and bursts of speed, gaining 41 yards on nine carries, not to mention 30 yards on two eye-catching touches that were wiped out by Rams penalties.
Funk stayed on his feet tenaciously on his way to 56 yards on seven carries, including a 19-yarder and an early 12-yarder on which he broke two Raiders tackles.
The bad news for the Rams was that Raymond Calais hurt an ankle, likely to require surgery for the third man in the backup-running-back competition and the leading candidate to return kickoffs and possibly punts.
Non-medically speaking, the Rams were hurt by 10 penalties, most of them by the offense.
The defense kept them in the game, as it did in the 13-6 loss to the Chargers the Saturday before.
Rookie outside linebacker Chris Garrett, a seventh-round draft pick, had a good first half, also forcing a fumble by quarterback Nathan Peterman that the Raiders recovered.
Rookie nose tackle Bobby Brown III, a fourth-round pick, had a big play too, powering through Raiders center Nick Martin to throw running back Trey Ragas for a three-yard loss.
Back to the offense.
A lot of the focus was on the the Rams’ ground game a week after the second-unit running backs and corresponding offensive line combined to averaged 2.8 yards per rush in the preseason-opening loss to the Chargers.
They quickly showed improvement.
This was important to see, because given Henderson’s own injury history, the second-string running back could play a vital role in 2021.
Each of the in-house candidates is 23 and hasn’t seen his first NFL regular-season carry.
Jones and Funk, listed as co-second-stringers at running back on the Rams depth chart, are fueled by memories of injury setbacks.
Injuries cost Jones scholarship offers from bigger college programs, and he settled for a career at SMU, where he led the nation with 23 rushing touchdowns as a senior. That wasn’t enough to get him drafted. The Rams signed him as a free agent in 2020.
“I always say I should have been drafted, but I can’t dwell on that too much,” Jones said last week. “I feel like God don’t make no mistakes. He put me here for a reason. I’ve always had to, I use the phrase, ‘get it out of the mud.’ It’s just a mentality, that chip on my shoulder. I’m ready to perform, ready to show my talent.”
Funk had two knee operations in college at Maryland, and hasn’t played a full season since 2017, one reason he dropped to the seventh round in last April’s draft before the Rams grabbed him.
“It’s a lonely place (rehabbing injuries),” Funk said when he reported for his first Rams training camp. “I competed with myself day in and day out. A lot of people counted me out throughout the process: ‘He’s injury prone,’ things like that. I just continued to block that out. I’ll let the results speak for themselves.”
The results looked better Saturday than the Saturday before.
The day didn’t begin well for the Rams. In the morning, they announced that both of their punters, Johnny Hekker and Corey Bojorquez, had been placed on the Covid-19 reserve list.
Kicker Matt Gay, who punted in high school in Utah, wound up doing double duty in the game.
His short punt out of the end zone set up a Raiders mini drive to a Ragas touchdown dive, but a field goal by Gay and a touchdown pass by Perkins to tight end Kendall Blanton made it 10-7 at halftime.
The Raiders (2-0) went ahead 17-10 midway through the fourth quarter on a 29-yard pass from Nathan Peterman to wide receiver Marcell Ateman.
Then came the drive by the Rams and Perkins and didn’t win them a game but might have won him a job.
McVay said a plan will come for who’ll play quarterback in the Rams’ last preseason game next Saturday against the Broncos in Denver.

The game started with an excellent tackle for a loss by rookie Bobby Brown III but was then followed up with a sack, an assisted sack, and a key pressure by the player picked 252nd in this years draft Chris Garrett. PS Game 2 analysis …
So first I want to say that it was a really good looking game for the preseason and what in effect is our third team offense and defense. Guys that might not make out team put on a show … minus the penalties of course. I expect penalties in preseason, but I don’t expect high level of execution by guys who will now be poached form our roster. Our DBs and WRs are going to be on other teams.
I’d honestly be looking for trade partners for late round picks for them. Not going to number it, just going player by player …
1) Garrett. After we drafted him I went and watched his highlights. My shock was not that he beat people a lot, it was that his speed was so other worldly and his change of direction so shocking that people might not even get a hand on him.
So, could he pull that off against better competition? The answer is yes. They might not have been first teamers (Though he made plays against Leatherwood) but they were NFL quality talent.
Also … have to note this … the ability to “strike” a football in the air rather than just “putting your arms up” is significant. Curious if anyone else noticed that. I want him dressed and in sub packages week 1. And the FF chop reminded me of Robert Quinn. Like Does Peterman still have an arm from the elbow down? Not sure until he gets up. Note, this gives us two players on the line that can beat you before you’re out of your stance.2) The backup DTs … Banks, Hoecht and Jonah Williams. I’m sad we’re likely going to lose two of them. I think Williams is the best of the bunch, but I’d love to PS Ernest Brown and keep them all active. They’ve outplayed Bobby Brown, but yes he’s a rookie. They’re all physical freaks and they’ve grown into the position. Wish we could get picks for guys we lose like this, too lol. Maybe trade one to NE for Sony Michel?
3) I want to keep JR Reed. I also want to keep Juju Hughes. Doubt we can keep both. That and Harris I thought played solid … wealthy.
4) I am not sure why Alaric Jackson isn’t getting more love. He started out by handling Clelin Farrel and then just walled off his guys for 60 minutes.
5) Jordan Meredtih I thought played great next to him and the left side was just solid while the right side with Evans and Brewer were unsteady.
6) Can someone tell me how Shelton looked? I mostly ignored him watching the sides.
7) Did Hopkins recover? Can Blanton be snuck onto the PS? I feel like the latter is true.
8) Perkins was impressive. I’ma UVA fan and had seen flashes, but to see him calm with shoebox accuracy at times was surprising. Command of the offense. Can he be stashed on the PS? Red zone poise and calm was impressive. Was thinking he’d be a championship level XFL player.
9) The RBs looked better with some improved run blocking (again, Mostly Meredith and Jackson from what I saw)… specific note on Funk .. when he sees a lane he gets to full speed in the backfield. Saw that from him at MD as well. Didn’t expect it so fast here. I still think we need a castoff looking to remake his career for insurance.
10) Koski and Akers. Amendola was cut before coming to us and having a long career. I’d love to stash them, just doubt it’s possible that we can keep 275 players.
11) Okay so Tutu had some wear and tear issues … so let’s like … not have him play every snap? That wasn’t the plan for him I thought? And blocking for a screen? Yeah let’s not do too much of that, because his ankles get him separation.
12) Warner we should be ale to hide and stash. He flashed and is a specimen, but he’s not playing at JR Reed’s level.
13) Just saw Calais broke his foot … definitely hunting RBs now.
I am really sad for the coaches that have to make cuts. We’re basically becoming a farm team for NFL talent.
Anyone that needed mentioning I didn’t get to?
oh yeah it was goof to see Howard and Burgess on the field, even briefly.

Perkins is looking to me like a better back up than Wolford especially the durability aspect. Atwell is too small and is going to get hurt quickly . Tavon is a giant compared with Atwell but that said Stafford puts that deep shot out in front of Atwell where he can go and get it.Garrett is a game wrecker this Defense is going to scary and the offense as well. Making cuts will be painful with this bunch.
