This a very glowing report. It gives high praise to Alaric Jackson.

It just might be that under a new coach, the Rams OL consolidated during the bye in the same way other units did on offense.

I love smash-mouth football ; I just figured that out, this season.

    Avila is 6’3″ 330 pounds.

    Dotson is 6’4″ 321 pounds.

I dont ever wanna see a small, agile guard again.

The Rams OL is No. 11 in pressure rate allowed, No. 4 in sacks allowed and No. 10 in pressures allowed through 15 games, per TruMedia. Sean McVay on first-year OL coach Ryan Wendell: “Incredibly smart, refreshingly secure person. He’s got a great mental toughness about himself
    .
(that) you can see from his experiences as a player. … You can see he’s got a great intuition, he just thinks through things. He’s got a unique way of being able to communicate with a calm presence but an urgency that guys respond to. I think one of the coolest things you can
    .
say as a coach is when your players don’t want to let you down. I think, because of how much he cares about them and pours into them (and) how well he wants to see them do, and how he really handles trying to solve problems WITH them really endears him to those guys.” McVay also
    .
gave credit to the assistant offensive line coaches Nick Jones and Zak Kromer, who work with the group each day, and also Mike Munchak who the Rams have had around as a consultant this year. The injury-embattled Rams OL ranked No. 30 with 59 sacks in ’22 and in the lower-third
    .
in pressure rate and total pressures allowed. The Rams added starting LG Steve Avila via the draft, traded for RG Kevin Dotson and turned over the keys at C to Coleman Shelton and to Alaric Jackson at LT instead of sticking with the players they had previously extended.

This one was posted before in the “plays, Saints game” thread but it goes here too and no harm in posting it twice.

PRF lists them as 3rd in sacks allowed percentage

I feel that this OL is better than our 2021 SB OL season.

    Whit was better than Jackson,
but Jackson is playing outstanding for a UDFA.

Everyone else on the OL is better than the rest of 2021 SB OL.

The three middle OL are by far much better than 2021,
    They’re bigger and stronger.

In 2021, we had to play the zone blocking scheme because we were small in the middle.

Now with a bigger middle, we can do all three in power gap, man, or zone.

This OL has been jelling together especially the last 6 games.

AJ held his own, not allowing Garrett to get to Stafford during the Browns match-up.

The middle of our OL, are not allowing pressure up the middle like in 2021,

Now Stafford can step up into the pocket if needed to make a throw.

Plus, they are opening up holes for are run game

jackson has been a revelation. just completely underestimated that dude. to the point that i don’t think they need to draft an lt. just try to re-sign him. he’s still young.

i’m still leaning toward letting dotson go only because i fear he will command too much money. i’d try to draft a guard. maybe even a center. try to make another trade. add a bargain basement free agent. just add numbers and let them compete.

Looks to me like a lot of this is not just the players but obviously the OL coach too, Wendell, who IMO has been just outstanding. This OL has the “Patriots feel” which doesn’t mean they play like the Patz exactly in terms of the scheme, but that the Patz, under the great OL coach Dante Scarnecchia, just had a real talent for playing together as a unit and for being aware of everything. Wendell played under Scarnecchia and then was an assistant OL coach for Aaron Kromer in Buffalo. That’s a good resume. It really looks like McV scored big with that coaching hire. An example of how that’s working out? IMO Havenstein has never played better.

And it’s the personnel people too. Look at what they paid for these guys in terms of picks:

    Jackson–UDFA
    Avila–2nd round
Shelton–“ronin” cut by SF, originally a UDFA
    Dotson–trade swapping 6th for 7th round pick, originally a 4th rounder
    Havenstein–2nd round

Just in terms of how they put this group together it reminds me of the great GSOT OL, which included a high pick (Pace), an expensive free agent (Timmerman), 2 “ronin” (Gruttadauria and Nutten…and McCollum too who makes a 3rd “ronin”), and a 5th rounder (Miller). What’s similar? As a group they were acquired in a multitude of ways. For 2023, it’s a UDFA, a “ronin” pick-up, a budget trade, and 2 2nd rounders.

The OLine has been good, indeed.   But i reaaallly want them to hold up against the 49ers Dline.   In the Shannahan era the Rams Oline’s for the most part, have been batted around like cat-toys by the SF Dline.

I assume McV has gotten really sick of that.   Hence the changes this year.

The Oline passed the Baltimore test which was a big one, but still, to me, there’s always one real test — San Francisco.

that’s kind of why i lean toward letting dotson go. not that he’s a jag. but i’m wondering if they can’t just find another diamond in the rough or two and coach them up. jackson i lean toward keeping because i think left tackles are hard to find and he’s also a restricted free agent so they have a little more control over the situation.

What a difference a year makes. OL games missed to injury in 2023.

    Alaric – 1
    Havenstein – 3
    Avila – 0
    Shelton – 0

Dotson (12 GS) and Noteboom (3 GS) have combined for 15 games at RG. Noteboom has started 3 games at RT and 1 at LT.
