Not all doom and gloom on the OL. UDFA Alaric Jackson has given up only 4 pressures in 119 pass-blocking snaps at right guard, despite only previously playing tackle (TruMediaSports).

Rob Havenstein at RT 10 pressures in 170 PBsnaps, seems solid w/situational context.

According to Snead on the Coach McVay show Edwards is likely to be a go for Sunday.

When Edwards and Allen return, we need to keep this line up together:

    Noteboom, Edwards, Allen, Jackson, RHav

Size matters, for protection in the middle. We can’t have Allen and Shelton next to each other. It reminds me of having both Allen and Blythe in the middle. Its ok to have one small guy in the middle, but not two, they seemed to get blown up with two small guys in the middle.

With the line-up I just posted, when we play a strong DL team, then we could ajust the play calls and schemes to slow down the pass rush if needed. It would give us a better chance.

When we played the Bills & 9ers, alot of their pressure came up the middle. I think we could eliminate Von Miller or Bosa with a TE help, then control the rest of the DL with this lineup.

If you’re a fan of PFF, Jackson is currently our second highest rated OL (behind Hav).

Matt Skura needs to start at center until Brian Allen or Coleman Shelton get back. Need that veteran presence. Aboushi was playing at a similar level as Corbett last year before the ACL. Would like to see him at LG. There are potential available solutions.
    from the wiki:
    .

    Oday Aboushi

    Professional career

    New York Jets

The New York Jets selected Aboushi in the fifth round, with the 141st overall pick, of the 2013 NFL Draft. The Jets signed him to a four-year rookie contract on May 10, 2013; financial terms were not disclosed.

Aboushi was inactive in 2013 for all 16 regular season games with the Jets. In 2014, he started 10 games after the starter was injured.

Aboushi was suspended without pay (about $34,400) for the first game of the 2015 season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse, in August 2015. Aboushi was released by the Jets on September 15, 2015, one day after his suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy ended.

    Houston Texans

The Houston Texans claimed Aboushi off of waivers on September 16, 2015.

    Seattle Seahawks

On March 17, 2017, Aboushi signed with the Seattle Seahawks. He started eight games at right guard before suffering a dislocated shoulder injury in Week 15. He was placed on injured reserve on December 13, 2017.

    Oakland Raiders

On July 28, 2018, Aboushi signed with the Oakland Raiders reuniting him with his previous year offensive line coach Tom Cable. He was released on September 1, 2018.

    Arizona Cardinals

On October 23, 2018, Aboushi signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

    Detroit Lions

On March 14, 2019, Aboushi signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Detroit Lions. On March 27, 2020, he re-signed with the Lions. He was released during final roster cuts on September 5, 2020, but re-signed with the team the next day. He was fined $5,221 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness in Week 2.

    Los Angeles Chargers

On March 20, 2021, Aboushi signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. He was named the Chargers starting right guard for the 2021 season. However, he suffered a torn ACL in Week 5 and was placed on season-ending injured reserve on October 12, 2021.

    Los Angeles Rams

On September 14, 2022, Aboushi signed with the practice squad of the Los Angeles Rams. He was promoted to the active roster six days later.

The Rams put guard David Edwards, who is in the concussion protocol, on injured reserve. They signed C Matt Skura to the 53-man roster and waived RB Jake Funk. Think there is a real shot we see Stafford working with his fourth center in six weeks.
    .
On a real-life, real stakes note I am hoping David Edwards is OK. He had a concussion and missed Week 4, then cleared protocol and then suffered another concussion on Sunday. Injured reserve means he will be out four games at minimum

    Lost:
    – Two starters in offseason (LT, RG)
    – One 2022 starter for entire season (RG)
    – Starting LG and C for multiple games and still going (LG, C)
    – Lost 2 backup/spot-starting OL for the entire season + majority of the season
    .
    How is this even possible

The Rams have gotten some of their best OL play this year from UDFA tackle Alaric Jackson, currently playing RG, and Jackson can play on either side, interior or exterior, which means *if* they want to try Oday Aboushi this week on the inside, they have some flexibility in where.

Have seen Carberry getting some criticism. Not sure the Rams OL woes are on him. 5 OL on IR is crazy. Jackson is playing at a starting caliber level. Allen played at a top-10 level last season. Shelton went from UDFA to starting RG. Guys are being developed.

Rams HC Sean McVay said they haven’t decided yet who will start at left guard and center on Sunday against the Panthers. McVay said Brian Allen will be out this week.

Working on my weekly OL/DL rankings and there just aren’t many OL units to feel great about right now across the NFL. I expect it to get a little better as the year goes on & things stabilize for some teams, but the variance feels a lot higher top to bottom compared to last year.

There’s a pretty clear tier 1, a few solid ones after that, but a lot of good scheming/QB play is bailing many of these units out. It’ll be really interesting to see how the landscape looks in another 5-6 weeks.

This is quite shocking (per @PFF): Andrew Whitworth (2021): 18 games – 20 pressures allowed – 6 sacks allowed
    Joe Noteboom (2022): 6 games – 23 pressures allowed – 5 sacks allowed Yikes.

The Rams had 8 offensive linemen on their roster to start the season. 6 of those linemen are now injured with Joe Noteboom leaving on a cart. Only Rob Havenstein and Bobby Evans remain.

Wonder if they’ll keep Jackson at LT, and on the off chance that it is not his achilles, play Noteboom at guard when he returns from injury.  Even when the offensive line injury woes were plaguing the St Louis Rams between 07 and 13, it was never this bad. What a crazy season.

Actually 2007 was worse. This year is admittedly bad (in 6 games, they played 2 guys at LOT, 3 at OC, and 6 at OG.)  But 2007 was legend level worse.

This year, unlike 2007, the Rams have some depth. There was no Alaric Jackson in 2007–a Rams find and develomental project.

Some people say now, in 2022, this wouldn’t have happened if the Rams had addressed OL in the draft. By that they always mean using high picks (1sts and 2nds). Well the 2007 OL started out with plenty of high picks–Pace, Barron, Incognito, Steussie. It didn’t do them any good at all. If you get an injury epidemic, doesn’t matter what round your injured players got picked in.

Nowhere in all of the mayhem of past OL injury epidemics did they have a Jackson on the bench.

It looks like Oday Aboushi can play too. Solid, not great. He’s a 2014 pick who played well for the Chargers last year before getting hurt.

This is from last year, when he started out playing well for the Chargers before getting hurt:

Signed this past offseason, Aboushi was a vital piece of the revamped offensive line. In 293 snaps, he only allowed five pressures and did not surrender a single sack.

My memory is fading. Hopefully Allen and Edwards can return and play well. Put Havenstein in bubble wrap in the meantime.

Havenstein is fine, so I am a little curious about what you mean by that. In contrast, Edwards may not be coming back this year (consecutive concussions).

Serious props need to be given to Alaric Jackson. Was arguably Rams best offensive linemen at RG (unnatural position). Moves to LT yesterday and again plays lights out.

Alaric Jackson last night (per @PFF): – 86.1 pass-blocking grade – 0 pressures allowed – 0 sacks allowed Those were all either season-high marks or tied for season-high marks for the Rams on their OL this season.

Alaric Jackson was the fourth-highest graded LT on PFF yesterday. Allowed 0 pressures. Rams got a good one.

Alaric Jackson and Oday Aboushi help stabilize Rams offensive line in win over Panthers

    Stu Jackson

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – As if the Rams’ injury luck couldn’t get any worse, head coach Sean McVay watched as starting left tackle Joe Noteboom got carted off the field early in the second quarter, and later ruled out for the game, with an ankle injury.

“It’s unbelievable, isn’t it?” McVay said postgame.

Fortunately, Los Angeles had two stabilizing forces between Alaric Jackson and Oday Aboushi, with Jackson holding it down in place of Noteboom at left tackle and Aboushi stepping up for Jackson at right guard in its 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

“I mean I feel sick for Joe Noteboom, but what a stud AJ Jackson was to pivot from right guard to left tackle. He was outstanding all day,” McVay said. “Oday Aboushi, I just met this guy a couple weeks ago and he is playing the whole game, doing a great job.”

Jackson has been a critical piece to the offensive line with his ability to multiple spots, which was aided in part by getting reps at both guard and tackle during training camp and the preseason this year.

Beyond that cross-training, that he made that switch to left tackle so seamlessly shouldn’t come as a shock, given it’s his natural position and he played it all of last year. When forced into action there against the Vikings in Week 16 last year, Jackson graded out well – Pro Football Focus said he allowed only two pressures and one hit, and didn’t give up a single sack.

“Things happen, just roll with it for the most part,” Jackson told theRams.com postgame.

That doesn’t mean it’s easy, though – just ask right tackle Rob Havenstein.

“If I had to go right to left, I would fall down,” Havenstein told theRams.com postgame, smiling. “I’ve been doing right tackle for awhile now, so. I could do right guard, but I don’t know if I could do anything on the left side. But just for AJ, kind of having the back-and-forth in camp, played a little guard, played right tackle, played left tackle, so he’s got some experience with it. But it just shows the capability of A.J.”

After Jackson moved to the outside, Havenstein spent the rest of game constantly talking to Aboushi, who was signed the Practice Squad on Sept. 14 and promoted to the Active Roster six days later.

Havenstein made sure to answer any questions Aboushi had. To that end, Havenstein said Aboushi’s communication was “great.” And likely reflective of someone with 73 career games under their belt.

“I think he’s a confident guy who communicates very well, and that’s something that this team needed desperately,” Havenstein said.

With Aboushi at right guard and Jackson at left tackle, the Rams engineered back-to-back touchdown-scoring drives in the second half to pull away from the Panthers and snap a two-game losing streak.

“I think it was good,” Jackson said of the Rams offense’s overall performance. “A step in the right direction for the most part. Use this as an opportunity to grow.”

It was a bad joke referring to the fact that Havenstein is the only starter on the line yet to be injured this year.

Matthew Stafford this season (per @PFF):

6.6 yards average depth of target
That’d be the lowest in his entire career

    2.57 seconds to throw
Second lowest TTT for him since 2015

That OL needs to improve. Quickly.

The Rams’ OL bears some responsibility on 94.6% of their dropbacks that have allowed pressure. That is the second-worst mark in the league. Stafford has the third-most dropbacks under pressure among QBs.
