I know they were out of sync on offense. Goff had one of his down days (worst was Denver). The Lions defended them very smart (Spielman was very good on that in the booth.) AND they won anyway on the road.
I like that they can have a down game and win.
The big play that sealed it was the AD strip/sack.
Pay the man.
December 2, 2018 at 4:26 pm #94764joemadParticipant10 AM body clock start for them…
But the Rams still TCB today….
December 2, 2018 at 4:38 pm #94769JackPMillerParticipantHave to worry about next week. The Bears defense is legit. Hopefully we will be better. Also, we need to play smarter. We had Lamarcus with a big PI call. Also, Suh and Littleton with back to back calls as well. That could come back to haunt us when playing against better teams.

Kidding. Not sure who our first Playoff foe will be, but am hoping for better than 1 and done…

Or could it be that we were a little off having two weeks off?

He said that directly in response to the 2 screens where Lions DL pulled up and played the screen. They were obviously coached to recognize those plays. In both cases it could look at first glance like it was Goff making bad throws to the defender but it wasn’t, it was great plays both times by the defender. This led Spielman to talk about how the Lions had deciphered some Rams plays. One of the challenges of defending against the Rams is they mask so many plays by having them all look like each other pre-snap. If there’s a way to decipher that, it helps the D.
Fact is the Lions had extra time to prepare for the Rams. Their last game was a Thursday nighter. That’s not the same as a bye but it’s a 3 day head start. So Patricia and the Lions defensive staff had extra time to go over Rams film.

i seem to remember the falcons shutting down the screen game last year in the playoffs.
rams need to figure out a way to counter that.

[someone said] it looked like the Rams played a lot like NO did last Thursday. I agreee, but I have a different theory. Detroit played like the Cowboys, they pressed the receivers from the line, redirected and delayed their routes. Their DLine pressured Goff and overall they played the run well, but not as well as the Cowboys did against NO. That caused the rythum and timing in the passing game to be off. Balls were more frequently thrown just out of reach of receivers, some open, some not. Brees and Goff looked off because of what the defense did to them. Receivers were not always where they were expected to be. We all saw many instances when there was contact down field by defensive backs holding and grabbing which could have been called but was not, same as in the NO v Cowboys game. This game was reminiscent of the Rams SB loss and the way the Patriots grabbed and held the Rams receivers and backs and made the GSOT look out of sync. It’s not a coincidence that the Detroit coach is a Belicheat deciple. This is what is coming, there is really no other way to defend a great passing offense under the current rules. McVay needs to get this figured out; maybe its good it happed now so they’ll be ready for it in the playoff.
PS, Rams defense played well, thank goodness.
December 3, 2018 at 12:17 am #94797canadaramParticipantDetroit’s defense has some real talent on the line and in the secondary and on top of that they looked prepared. Having said that Goff still made bad decisions, like throwing into triple overage on his first INT. Anyway, thanks to the football gods for giving the Rams Gurley and Donald. I hope Brown is ok, otherwise we may see Davis and/or Kelly suit up vs. the Bears on SNF.
Super excited that the Rams are division champs again. I’m going to soak that up all holiday season.

What did Spielman say?
My wife walked into the room at the exact moment the play-by-play guy asked Spielman what the blueprint is, and I didn’t catch a word of what he said.
I thought I was seeing the Patriots redux from the Super Bowl. I don’t know how they got away with it, but they did.
I will say, though, that the Lions DL got the better of the Rams OL all day long. Goff got pressured and hit a lot. I will keep an eye out for those numbers since I only eyeballed that rather than counted the hits, but that may show up later. A testament to Goff that he battled through that.
Not much in the way of TE action, either. I thought we were seeing a coming out party against KC, but nope.

bring the 2001 Super Bowl redux……. Gurley ran for 130+ plus yesterday… Faulk could’ve done the same thing, but Martz was just too stubborn and it cost them big time……..

I dunno if blueprints matter if you don’t have the builders/players to follow the blueprints, or if the Rams adjust and you wind up with blueprints that are not relevant anymore. If other teams follow this blueprint and lose to us by 14 points, I’m fine with that.
December 3, 2018 at 2:17 pm #94807HerzogParticipantI feel like Mcvay is falling in love with the downfield stuff. All that is fine and good, but you can’t rely on slow developing plays all the time. Especially in the playoffs.
That being said…. The defense did look very different. If Talib stays healthy and Fowler keeps doing what he’s doing. I like our chances.
December 3, 2018 at 3:26 pm #94814nittany ramModeratorWhat did Spielman say?
He said today the Rams have been exposed as the frauds that they are.
Then he raised is fist into the air, yelled “Hail Satan!”, and jumped through the window of the broadcast booth and plummeted to his death on the seats below.
You know, just the standard football rhetoric.

Yes but BEFORE that he said something—which I kinda caught, kinda didn’t—about how the Lions (or, Patz D midwest) were recognizing and reacting to Rams plays which normally catch teams off-guard. One key to the Rams success on offense is running so many different plays from a more limited set of formations, so you cannot tell most of the time ahead of the snap what the play will be. Worse, the formations point to contradictory plays. So for example the Rams run almost exclusively out of formations with Goff under center, but then the same formations lead to a ton of play action calls. Spielman offered most of this in response to the 2 nearly picked off screens. He pointed out that they were nearly picked off because the Lions defenders read screen and pulled up to be in a position to interfere with the play. This could only mean they read the screens in progress and had been prepped to see them. Spielman’s thing, then, was that with the Rams, you have to react to plays unfolding, not to what the pre-snap looks say. I suppose learning to do that and act on it instantly in real time is not all that easy.

McVay
I am grateful for what we have. Do you know how many other teams would kill to have our HC? Do you know how many offenses would kill to have him calling plays? The man isn’t perfect. There’s no such thing as a perfect coach. But he is the best damn play-caller in the NFL. He might be the best damn head coach in the NFL. We’ll see on that.
We played poorly and still won 30-16. That’s what great teams do. Aaron Donald is a monster. Ridiculous that he has 16.5 sacks, 20 TFLs, and 4 FFs as a constantly doubled DT in only 12 games.
The Offense
The entire team was off today. Goff missed some throws he makes (and fumbled the ball away on a play where he had Woods open for a nice gain). The Lions got away with some penalties that screwed him on a couple of should-be big plays. And the receivers were off just a tad with the timing and routes. Simply put, we were just a little off as a whole today.
And let’s not claim Gurley was unstoppable. Gurley was getting stopped for large chunks of this game. When he was running well, we gave him opportunities. But there were plenty of drives where we were running Gurley into a wall.
Just tip your cap to the Lions. We had an off day, and their defense played well. Sometimes, the defense just executes well. That was true today. I don’t think it’s an omen or anything. Goff has had some games where he looked unstoppable this year, and two games where he was off. Those two games were the Broncos and the Lions. I expect he bounces back against the Bears. The kid tends to bring it in the games we need it the most.
The Defense
Our run defense improved? Our opponent is the biggest reason imo. But Suh and Donald were a lot more disruptive in the running game. That played a big role. Ebukam needs to be more consistent setting the edge. Fowler Jr. was excellent today at it. He seems to be settling in nicely. If he continues to set the edge well, that’ll solve some problems. Still, we really need an ILB next to Littleton who can fill gaps. Barron used to be that guy, but he’s just not playing like himself this year.
Honestly, I think I’d try Hager or Kiser next week. Ramik Wilson isn’t the answer. Barron doesn’t seem to be. Give somebody else a shot. I dunno. Wade sees these guys practice, so who am I to question him? I’m just frustrated with the lack of consistent play from the ILBs. And for fucks sake, Brockers, you need to wake up.
December 4, 2018 at 7:50 am #94870wvParticipantI watched the replay. Goff looked worse than I’ve seen him since the fisher days.
And not just his play, but on the sidelines. He looked like he had the flu to me. Just looked pale and…off.
I expected the defense to look better against teams like Detroit (and Chicago).
Any win away from home is great, but man that was ugly.
Cooper Kupp is missed.

Game 12 Lions …
This was an ugly win, but those count too.
I have an inkling that we
1) Went vanilla to save some of our plays for better competition.
2) Figured out what Matt P was doing with his coverage but DID NOT ADJUST to bait teams into trying to use it against us in the future.Am I sure? No. But it felt like it when I was watching.
What I saw from their coverage was that they seemed to drift into “high traffic areas” … places where we often throw the ball rather than covering our guys directly. I don’t know if anyone else saw that like I did … but it would explain why Jared was hesitating on his plant foot every drop back. The Great
1) Aaron Donald is a Ram for the foreseeable future, and honestly could be MVP.
2) Having Talib back. Goodness.
3) (Gurley) Having enough confidence to go down on the 1 for time while knowing you could punch it in a couple plays later.
4) Cook over 1000 yards 4 years in a row, including 3 teams in 3 years …
The Good
5) The Robert Woods TD … unspectacular, but a play that not everyone can make. Small window for the target and not the easiest catch, but a play we make with confidence this year.
6) Pass blocking.
7) Run fits on defense.
8) GZ … consistent.
The Bad
9) Jarrrrrredddd … whew buddy … how many passes missed? And the fumble? You’re totally cool to put up a stinker once a year … but I’ve gotta call you on it.
10) How does Levine Toilolo have a career game against us?
11) Malcolm Brown loss … yes there’s an upside with the youngsters that is definitely needed … but I like the psychological security of Brown.
12) Pharoh Cooper … Im not into the running it out to the 20 thing. It’s dumb.
13) Refs missing holding calls consistently on our WRs.
14) Overall coming out flat. I’m not a fan. That has to be our last dud. We’re fighting for home field advantage.
