Rams Sign Foles to 2-Year ExtensionPosted 22 minutes ago
Myles Simmons Rams Insider @MylesASimmons
The Nick Foles era will go beyond 2015 for the Rams, as the quarterback signed a two-year contract extension on Friday, head coach Jeff Fisher announced following the club’s scrimmage at Lindenwood. With the deal, Foles is now under contract with the organization through the 2017 season.
Originally drafted by the Eagles, Foles was traded to the Rams in March and immediately made a positive impact. Often saying he wanted to build strong relationships with his receivers, the quarterback appears to have done so very well through the first week of training camp.
But even back in OTAs, tight end Jared Cook heaped effusive praise on the new signal-caller.
“He’s everything that you want in a quarterback — everything that you’ve always wanted,” Cook said back in June. “It just feels like he belongs here, and it feels like he’s been here for a while, which is a good piece. It’s what we need.”
After a solid rookie season under head coach Andy Reid, Foles excelled in his first season under Chip Kelly, compiling an outstanding 27 touchdowns to only two interceptions in 2013. Over the past two seasons as a starter, Foles led the Eagles to a 14-4 record and a playoff appearance.

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) August 8, 2015
That probably means they added about 34.5m to his 1.5m this year = 36m. My guess was 30m. Possibly the last year is a bit inflated? It will certainly contain less guaranteed money.
August 7, 2015 at 8:51 pm #28310znModeratorValue of the deal is more than $12m per year.
That depends on whether they mean 12 M for 3 years starting with 2015, or 12 M for the 2 new years.
Cause if it includes 2015, then that’s 31 M for 2016 and 2017 combined.
So more than likely, it just means that 2016 & 2017 = a total at least 24 M.
That depends on whether they mean 12 M for 3 years starting with 2015, or 12 M for the 2 new years.

If that is true? Demoff is a genius. 😉 I don’t think it is, but he is a genius anyway.

August 7, 2015 at 8:54 pm #28313znModeratorOr it could mean all 3 years combined = 36 M. If so, the avg. for 2016 and 2017 is near the 16 M which is the low end for what starting qbs get in their 2nd contracts.

I am confident that my original figure is correct. 36m. The biggest thing is that the Rams aren’t obligated past 2017. The next thing is the exact structure. Then what is the salary cap hit each year and what is the guarantee, but 16 million is as good a short cut figure as any.
August 7, 2015 at 9:04 pm #28317znModeratorThen what is the salary cap hit each year, but 16 million is a good a short cut figure as any.
Jist to clarify-atize,
the mantra is that until Wilson, the avg. deal for a starting qb up for his 2nd contract was 18 M, with 16 M being the low end (Dalton) and 20+ M being the high end (Flacco).
If Foles is signed for 2016/17 at 16+ or so a year, then, he could have given an early extension discount. Cause with a good year, he could have been looking at 18 M or so a year.
August 7, 2015 at 9:06 pm #28318AgamemnonParticipant@Jeff_McLane Just under $14m

It is starting to sound like the last year might contain some funny money. If that is so, we are just making gross estimates.

Rams sign Foles to contract extension
21 minutes ago • By Jim ThomasWithout throwing a pass for the Rams in the regular season, or even the preseason, the Rams have seen enough in Nick Foles. They signed their new starting quarterback to a two-year contract extension Friday, shortly before the start of the team’s practice/scrimmage at Lindenwood University.
Confirmed contract details weren’t immediately available, but Foles will be under contract through the 2017 season with the Rams. Initial reports via ESPN said it was a two-year extension for $24.5 million. Other reports indicated that $14 million was guaranteed.
“It’s his baby now,” said coach Jeff Fisher, who announced the deal after Friday’s practice. “This is his team. So we’ve got to go win games.”
The Rams have more than a dozen players, either starters or key role players, with contracts that expire at the end of this season. Foles, who was acquired in the Sam Bradford trade in March, was at the top of the list.
“I think from the moment we made the trade, we always knew we wanted to try to find a way to get Nick some security,” Rams executive vice president Kevin Demoff said. “And for us to be able to plan for the long-term future with Nick at quarterback. We looked at a lot of different ideas and concepts, and spent a few months with his representatives trying to come up with something that made sense for both sides.”
Foles, 26, earned a Pro Bowl berth with Philadelphia in 2013 _ a season in which he threw 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions. But he struggled in 2014, and missed half the season with a broken collarbone.
“I’m blessed,” Foles said after practice. “I’m just really thankful to Mr. (Stan) Kroenke, Coach Fisher, Les (Snead), and Kevin. I’m just thankful to be here _ be with these guys. . . .It really is a honor to be here and be wanted here.”
August 7, 2015 at 9:32 pm #28330AgamemnonParticipantNumbers confirmed at $26 million over 3 years. The 2-year extension is $24.5 million (for 2016 & '17). The '17 season can be voided.
— Jim Thomas (@jthom1) August 8, 2015
The '17 season voided based on team wins and Pro Bowl. So it keeps Foles around for a while, but not exactly a long-term deal.

Here are the numbers for Foles. Wrote over the summer that deal in the $12-14 million annual range would make sense.
At first blush, this seems like a logical deal on both sides between #Rams and Nick Foles.
For #Rams, it doesn’t break the bank and they can get out relatively easy if he struggles
For Nick Foles, he gets another bite at apple soon if he excels. He’ll only be 29 when this deal would presumably expire.
August 7, 2015 at 10:26 pm #28334PA RamParticipantGood job, Rams.
If Foles can be a solid, healthy QB they may finally get the stability at that position that this team needs. This team does not need Peyton Manning. They just need a solid, healthy player who doesn’t make costly mistakes. I believe Foles can be that guy.

Rams say Foles is their man with extension
3 hours ago • By Jim ThomasThe Rams handed the car keys to quarterback Nick Foles with a contract extension.
“He won’t crash,” Rams executive vice president Kevin Demoff said.
Without throwing a pass for the team in the regular season, or even the preseason, the Rams have seen enough in Foles. They signed their new starter to a two-year contract extension Friday, shortly before the start of the team’s practice and scrimmage at Lindenwood University.
Foles had been scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after this season. Now, he could be under contract through the 2017 season, with the three-year value of the deal at $26 million as confirmed through league sources. He was scheduled to make $1.52 million this season, so the two-year extension is worth $24.5 million. Just under $14 million of the total is guaranteed.
“It’s his baby now,” said coach Jeff Fisher, who announced the deal after Friday’s practice before about 4,000 at Lindenwood. “This is his team. So we’ve got to go win games.”
Interestingly, the 2017 season in Foles’ contract can be voided based on team victories and a Pro Bowl berth. So while the deal gives Foles — and the Rams — some security at the position, the extension is hardly what could be called a long-term deal.
The Rams have more than a dozen players, either starters or key role players, with contracts that expire at the end of this season. Foles, who was acquired from Philadelphia in the Sam Bradford trade in March, was at the top of the list in terms of priorities.
“I think from the moment we made the trade, we always knew we wanted to try to find a way to get Nick some security,” Demoff said. “And for us to be able to plan for the long-term future with Nick at quarterback. We looked at a lot of different ideas and concepts, and spent a few months with his representatives trying to come up with something that made sense for both sides.”
Senior assistant Tony Pastoors of the Rams handled the negotiations.
Foles, 26, earned a Pro Bowl berth with Philadelphia in 2013 — a season in which he threw 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions. But he struggled in 2014 and missed half the season with a broken collarbone.
After signing the contract at Rams Park, Foles got on the team bus and sat in the front seat next to Fisher on the short bus ride to Lindenwood. His teammates didn’t know about the deal until word spread after the scrimmage.
“I’m blessed,” Foles said after practice. “I’m just really thankful to Mr. (Stan) Kroenke, Coach Fisher, Les (Snead), and Kevin. I’m just thankful to be here — be with these guys. … It really is an honor to be here and be wanted here.”
While Foles was surprised at the trade that brought him here in March, that wasn’t the case with the extension. Foles’ basic stance on negotiations was if it happened, great. But if a deal couldn’t be reached, he wasn’t going to let it affect his play.
“I think entering the season with all that taken care of is great, but either way I would’ve been me,” Foles said. “It’s one of those things that it’s not going to affect me when I play this game. I play it for my teammates, I play it for the people that support us, my family. So that would never change the way I play the game.”
As has been his custom so far in dealing with the media as a Ram, Foles showed little outward emotion about the new deal. But Fisher couldn’t help smiling — several times, in fact — during his remarks after practice.
“It was important to us,” Fisher said. “We’ve seen enough (in Foles). We wanted to get a deal done that was good for both sides.”
In a lot of cases, teams want to see a player new to their roster perform for a while before deciding whether to extend the contract. But that wasn’t necessary in the case of Foles and the Rams, according to Fisher.
“It’s what he’s done on the field early in his career thus far in the league, and then what he’s done for us since he got here,” Fisher said. “He gets the game. He understands it. He’s got tremendous leadership qualities and we can settle in and now the players can rally around him. He can rally them and we’ll go on and win a lot of games.”
One of the early stories involving Foles was how quickly he established his presence in the locker room, the meeting room, and on the practice field. General manager Snead has talked about his ability to relate to people.
“When you’re the quarterback, you’re one of the guys that everyone’s gonna look to automatically, so there’s definitely a leadership role that takes place,” Foles said. “But there’s many leaders on this team that do a great job, and that’s how you build or bolster a winning franchise.
“I can’t do it alone. There’s a lot of guys on this team that do a great job of working hard, keeping guys going. It’s a team game. I’m just a small piece of the puzzle.”
The Rams are still working on contract extensions for several other players scheduled to be free agents after the 2015 season. If Foles was the top priority, cornerback Janoris Jenkins probably is 1A. The team is also talking to the agents for wide receiver Brian Quick, safety Rodney McLeod and tight end/fullback Cory Harkey, among others, about new deals.

Assuminng, Foles is a solid QB.I guess Fisher is convinced Foles can
be a solid QB.This to me ignores the basics of good, sound football analysis.
So it looks like I will have to supply that myself.
What the optimistic view ignores is the curse that befalls good Rams qbs once they get a big contract.
Warner signed a big extension in 2000. As a result, he was injured and concussed that year. Then there was 2002 and 2003.
Bulger was coming on until after he signed a big 2nd contract. Then it was 3 years of non-stop physical abuse behind OLs suffering from over-the-top injuries.
Bradford of course signed his big contract as a rookie. And, was therefore surrounded by instability and a long list of OL injuries.
That’s what good, nutz n boltz, real rational and scientific football analysis shows us: how things like position curses work.
