Rams lock in another piece that was questionable going forward. Rams were in a situation where any or all of the five starting OL spots could turn over next season==

The #Rams and RT Rob Havenstein agreed to terms on a 4-year extension, the team announced, and source said it’s worth more than $32M. He was a priority, especially considering his role in paving the way for Todd Gurley.—
Solid move for the Rams. Over the last 3 years Havenstein has played 2698 snaps at RT and rated as a "good starter" with a 75.1 grade. That's 11th among RT's with over 2000 snaps. https://t.co/6IEkKiDR5Z

This signing is the Rams making a statement that Noteboom’s the LT. It aligns with him primarily getting snaps at LT. I really doubt his long term future will be at a guard position.
This development definitely affects 1st round draft targets in 2019. It opens everything up….

August 20, 2018 at 11:21 pm #89666JackPMillerParticipantThis one was a bit surprising to me. I thought we could go into the draft, and get a future LT, and move Notebloom to RT. Havenstein is OK, but nothing special, not worth that kind $8 million per as an extension. $5.5 million per, would have been better for a RT. But I would have let Hav walked though. Then again, they must see something in Hav that I don’t.
August 21, 2018 at 1:38 am #89669ZooeyModeratorI like it, (though I am curious where that puts him on the RT salary list. It sound reasonable to me). And if he is the 11th best RT, I will take that rather than go fishing in the draft for someone else, especially because continuity is very valuable, and a lot of OLs around the league are in flux a lot. I think 11th-best improves by staying where he is with continuity everywhere. Brown is staying next to him for a couple more years at least. If we can keep Saffold, too, and that seems promising based on what he said this week, we have a lot of both Blue Chip and Red Chip players under contract for a good stretch of time. This OL appears to have depth and a steal in Noteboom as future LT. And the core players are all young.
This front office has done an amazing job of acquiring young talent, nailing it down, and reinforcing it. Combine that with an innovative, popular, hard-working, and extremely intelligent (memory) head coach, and the Rams looked poised right now to run off a string of memorable and entertaining seasons. In fact, I do not remember the Rams ever being positioned this strongly since the origin of the salary cap.
I’m feeling like I just acquired a high performance sports car, and I am free to go.
August 21, 2018 at 1:47 am #89670ZooeyModeratorI mean…a lot of these guys are at the Young End of their primes. A lot of guys on their first contracts, or just grabbing their second.

Good post. I agree on the high note part. Yep things are looking as good as they could at this point.
Some more things. Don’t mind me, you got me tah thinkin.
Chances are by keeping Hav that means they’re not keeping Brown. He;s a FA after this season. Looks like Brown is a goner. Depending on what else happens, Demby could develop (he’s not starting out bad at all), Noteboom looks very solid but he might be needed elsewhere, they could draft a guy (they have 4 picks in rounds 1-3), and maybe one of the aspiring ronin/udfa types could mature into the role (thinking of guys like Neary, Eldrencamp–it’s a long and right now not that distinguished list).
Whitworth and Sullivan are both getting up there but Noteboom looks promising and in a different way so does Allen.
2019 is supposed to be a good OL draft and my bet is, they will have to hit it for that.
Saffold? A wildcard. He may sign for low but even if he does, we’re talking 5-6 M, which is what I see looking at comparable guys of the same age who signed for a bit less.
Hav’s contract puts him at 3rd right now for ROTs. He’s not really the 3rd best ROT in the league but that’s not how contracts work. Decent ROTs of his caliber were signing for 7+ to 8 M last year. High end is the Eagles’s Lane Johnson at 11+ M but he is a big exception. In comparison to all OTs in general, 8 M puts Hav at about 22nd, but then good LOTs just earn a lot more than ROTs so that’s never a valid comparison. Every single LOT who gets more than Hav could play ROT at least as well as him and probably better, and Hav couldn’t play LOT.
I have mixed feelings about this signing but as mixed feelings go it’s lowkey. I think Hav is at the high end of middle of the pack as a right OT, and ROTs are not that hard to replace. By saying if he’s 11th best you were fine with that indicates you are not quibbling about this, and I;m not the opposite of that but I am quibbling just a bit. It wouldn’t be what I did but then it’s also not a bad decision either. Both the best and the worst that can be said about signing Hav is that there’s really nothing wrong with it.
In terms of continuity, after this year, there won’t be much. IF Whit and Sullivan still play, and if they keep Saffold, then yes they have Hav, and with those 4 in place that is the high end of possible continuity, but just for 2019. But any 1 of those other three are gone next year, and that could be up to possibly all 3 of them gone, and if goes that way then it;s Hav and Noteboom, and they’re really starting over on the OL with Hav being the one continuing veteran. That’s common in the NFL…old fashioned OL continuity kind of went away with the pre-cap/free agency era. So it’s pretty common around the league.

Rams Agree to Terms With Rob Havenstein on Four-Year Extension

The Rams have agreed to terms with right tackle Rob Havenstein on a four-year extension, keeping him under contract with the club through the 2022 season.
Originally a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Havenstein has been a mainstay of the Rams’ offensive line since he arrived at that spring’s rookie minicamp. He’s started each of the 43 games he’s played since entering the league.

“We’re excited to extend Rob with the Rams for another four seasons,” Rams Head Coach Sean McVay said. “He’s been a reliable member of our offensive line and maintaining consistency among that unit is important as we continue to grow offensively. Congratulations to Rob and his family.”
On draft night, general manager Les Snead declared, “With big Rob, he’s ready to play.” And Havenstein proved Snead right by starting at right tackle fin the Week 1 victory over the Seahawks. Havenstein played in 13 games his rookie year — missing three due to injury — and was a significant factor in running back Todd Gurley earning AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Wisconsin product was named to the PFWA All-Rookie team for his 2015 performance.
Havenstein continued on as Los Angeles’ starting right tackle in each of the last two seasons, starting 15 games each year. He again helped pave the way for Gurley’s strong season in 2017, as the running back was named AP Offensive Player of the year after recording 1,305 yards rushing with 13 rushing touchdowns as well as 19 total touchdowns and 2,093 yards from scrimmage.
Entering his fourth professional season, Havenstein was slated to be a free agent next March. Now he’s become the second member of the Rams 2015 draft class to receive a long-term extension in the last 30 days, following Gurley. Havenstein is one of five members of that draft class still with the club, including Gurley, right guard Jamon Brown, backup quarterback Sean Mannion, and inside linebacker Bryce Hager. The club also brought on running back Malcolm Brown, outside linebacker Matt Longacre, and offensive lineman Darrell Williams as undrafted free agents that spring.August 21, 2018 at 2:42 pm #89686ZooeyModeratorGood post. I thought Brown was younger than that, and that he had another year or two on his rookie deal, or team option, or whatever. I don’t know the details on how that works.
I am surprised $8 million is 3rd highest, but with all contracts, you also need to estimate where he will be at the end of the deal. Perhaps $8 million/year will be, you know, 22nd in four years time, so it would average out.
I know nobody will be surprised when I say this, but I want a Center. Been saying that for at least 10 years. Maybe Allen is that guy, but the one report that sticks with me was from early in camp saying that he was getting thrown around a lot. I don’t think Blythe is going down in the annals of Rams history as anything more than name on a list of former players.

It certainly is strange.
What was the name of that guy who used to leak crappy stuff to the media about players during contract negotiations?
I am no fan of Kroenke, but you have to admit, the team management has improved dramatically since he took full ownership. The guy knows enough to fill his staff with people who know what they are doing, and then let them do it. Jerry Jones he is not. Daniel Snyder he does not resemble.

Recent reports, including from game reviews, are better.
