Take away returns in recent games, and the Rams give up this many points each week:

    20 points at Philly
    24 vs. San Fran
    26 at Seattle
    27 at Chiefs
    10 at San Fran
    17 at Arizona
    7 vs. Denver

And, that’s just taking out the returns. Let’s not forget how many times the offense failed to control the ball, especially in the 2nd half. I thought this defense turned a corner the past few weeks, and with a semblance of an offense last week would have helped beat the Cardinals in Arizona. This week, the Broncos were a little out of sync due to some injuries, but the secondary, which was vulnerable much of the year, played really well.

I think we’re seeing what’s possible from the D. Things look like they’re finally clicking. With some consistent offense, this team could be really fun to watch the rest of the season. Just have to get Hill on the same page as the wide receivers, have Robbie grow up at LT and put together a balanced attack. We even had some Stedman Baily sightings today, so maybe he can be a factor, too.

They’ll be at the Chargers next week, and we’ll see if this young D can keep this moving in the right direction.

I’m glad it has but why has the defense come together now?

The starting corners have both played the past two games for the first time this season and the secondary looks like it has improved a great deal to me. The soft zone stuff seems to be gone and coverage seems to be tighter. Is that the main reason? Or, did Williams and staff ‘figure out’ how to use their personnel? Maybe the players have finally figured out Williams schemes?

IMO? They were learning a new defense with 3 things slowing that down.

    1. The secondary is young. Younger units just take longer I think. You’re right that that got magnified by injuries…and if anything the replacements were even younger.

    2. These old coaches now have far less time to install things in the off-season. That’s the new CBA…it limits practice time. There’s a vid on here somewhere from the week before the game where McDonald talks about all the extra meetings they had this season trying to fix things.

    3. A Wms. defense is as complicated in its own way as a McDaniels offense, so that just compounds the whole thing.

So, young defenses with less time to learn a complicated system make HUGE mistakes until they learn the system. Blown coverages mean you don’t know where to be, and where you’re supposed to be will depend on variables the offense gives you. It’s like sight adjustments for young receivers.

The problem was, before, when they made the huge mistakes, they would tank. Somehow the coaches beat that out of them, because they did not come anywhere near tanking this week.

They also improved their tackling, which to me just means they’re now playing and not thinking. They just react like they’re supposed to react. Makes for a more confident player.

another amazing stat…Broncos 4-of-15 on 3rd and 4th downs today. That’s a great, great job by the defense…

As long as we are talking defensive numbers.

Ever since the KC game, Rams have tightened up against the run.

SF: 21 carries, 80 yards (and they are 9th in rushing yards)
ARZ: 22 carries, 28 yards (though they were 29th in rushing yards)
DEN: 10 caries, 28 yards (though they were 25th in rushing yards)
    ttl: 53, 136 = 2.6 YPA

Right now the defenses with the best YPC numbers are Seattle, Detroit, and Denver, all of whom are tied with 3.2 YPC.

(Though, the Rams offense just put up 131 yards on Denver with a 4.0 YPC.)

That will be tested in the future by Seattle, since they are right now 1st in rushing yards and yards per attempt.

Every other team the Rams will play is mediocre to bad at running the ball.

The Rams were pretty good against Seattle, too, except Wilson got loose for some big runs.

    Yeah.

But that was because of the OLD Ogletree. g

it’s good to see ogletree making plays again. i was getting worried for awhile.

so far he’s got 2 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles. just needs to be consistent with his tackling and not give up bone headed plays.
