Rams defense against the pass

Interesting stat line. Rams defense against the pass…

Att(174) Comp(128) PCT(73.6) YDS(1277) YDS/Att(7.3) YDS/GM(235.4) LG(65) TD(5) TD PCT(2.9) INT(5) Int Pct(2.9) Sacks(19) Sack yds(100) Rating(91.6

The 91.6 rating, 73.6 completion pct and 7.3 yds/att really stand out.
Especially considering the 19 sacks…the Rams are sacking enemy QBs every 9 times they attempt a pass yet those QBs still manage to complete 73.6 pct of their passes. A lot of that is obviously due to the short quick passes teams have been using to nullify the pass rush and the quality of the QBs the Rams have faced…Wilson, Cousins, Rothlesberger, Palmer, Rodgers…

I suspect those passing numbers will begin to drop over the next several weeks as the Rams face more pedestrian QBs.

for what it’s worth. the rams have held wilson, roethlisberger, palmer, and rodgers to their season low qb ratings so far. the only exception is cousins who had his season high qb rating.

The positive stats from above are of course the 19 sacks and the 5 TD passes given up.

The Rams only gave up 5 TD’s to the likes of Wilson, Rothlesberger, Palmer and Rodgers. 5 TD’s in 5 games against that ‘murderer’s row’ of QB’s is about as good as it get’s, IMO.

Opposing teams have been able to matriculate the ball down the field between the 20’s despite facing a tremendous pass rush through short, quick passes. But when they get into the red zone the defense can compress and guard against the short stuff. So the offense is forced to settle for FG’s. That stat line is what you would expect from a successful bend but don’t break defense I suppose.

We did good against Rogers. 3 ‘3 and outs’, 3 turnovers, and only gave up 17 points on defense. I liked that we played more tight coverage and didn’t always give up the short pass. It didn’t feel like our typical form of defense. I was glad to see the change and glad that it worked. You can play good defense with the bend don’t break stuff. Look what TBay did with the cover 2 back in the day. But, I prefer the more dynamic stuff. Lets get more shutouts. We got a couple last year.

I suspect a great ‘bend but don’t break’ defense can get a lot of three and outs against inferior teams that just don’t match up. Plus perhaps you can take more chances against offenses that are less likely to hurt you for it.
