Rams cut Tim Barnes
Saw it on the screen on NFL Network. Did not see that coming. Who plays Center? Do the go draft or free agency for the Center position?

ESPN Staff WriterThe Rams have released TE Lance Kendricks, DL Eugene Sims and C Tim Barnes.

ESPN Staff WriterSo tonight, the Rams parted ways with four players. That frees up close to $16M in salary cap space for 2017. Obviously, though, it opens some holes. They lose a starting DE (Will Hayes) and a key backup (Eugene Sims), their starting TE (Lance Kendricks) and their starting C (Tim Barnes). What it means? Well, Tyler Higbee will probably see a lot more targets, the Rams still need a center, and it will be interesting to see what they do with DE Robert Quinn, with the Rams moving from a 4-3 to a 3-4.

So they trade Hayes to move up 17 spots from round 7 into round 6.
Which is more than they would have gotten if they had just cut him.
March 10, 2017 at 2:02 am #66086InvaderRamModeratorthey need a tight end. higbee and hemingway aren’t going to cut it. and neither is that converted tight end they just signed. maybe they sign a fa, but i’m guessing they draft one.
March 10, 2017 at 2:14 am #66087InvaderRamModeratornow i’m imagining the rams draft bucky hodges with their second round pick.

It’s all about cap space. He doesn’t fit the new scheme. Trading him saves us $5.5 million. Cutting him saves us only $2.5 million.
March 10, 2017 at 7:07 am #66091JackPMillerParticipantNow we need a Center and help on the DLine. I’m assuming a Center or 3-4 DE will be picked with our 2nd round pick.
March 10, 2017 at 7:25 am #66092PA RamParticipantBarnes doesn’t surprise me. They clearly need to upgrade the center spot. The others are a bit of a surprise but then this is pretty much a rebuild. They’re changing the defensive scheme and Wade knows who he wants. Now we’ll see who they target to get.

i wonder if they’d take mcdowell if he got to them. i also wonder how they rank kpassagnon.
also maybe sanbagger gets his wish and elfein becomes a target with that second rounder.

I’ve been pushing for Elflein as well. I want to build an OLine.
March 10, 2017 at 10:17 am #66101ZooeyModeratorThat surprises me right down the line. It’s not that I don’t think the Rams can upgrade over those players, but they haven’t. So if you don’t have people as good or better lined up, it seems like a loss to cut them. Barnes wasn’t memorable, but he is better than the players behind him.
Hayes I don’t understand. The guy is a pretty good football player, a starting defensive end (or very good depth), and they gave him away. I don’t know what “System fit” means. The guy could rush the QB, and could tackle. I’m sure Wade knows what he’s doing, but I don’t understand this. Now the Rams have Quinn. No Hayes, no Sims, and Westbrook is in trouble. Now they are thin on the DL – which was the team’s strength – and they’re thin at LB, and need help in the secondary.
Kendricks also was no all-pro, but I didn’t see anything from Hemingway or Higbee outside of pre-season.
This just seems to have created a lot more needs in a year with no 1st round pick.
But it’s not the last move, obviously. I sure hope to see some more FA signings, though.

From what I saw looking it up, cutting Mason saves them 0.75 M and change, and I couldn’t find info on Watts.

Sure they do.
This is one of the deepest drafts in years at certain positions, including interestingly DB, TE, and DE. As one draftnik put it recently, this year, you can get starters in the 4th round.
And this is a young team with a lot of players we don’t know about yet.
…
March 10, 2017 at 2:09 pm #66119InvaderRamModeratorso the needs as i see it.
center
tight end
defensive end
outside linebacker
cornerback
safetythey’ve got four picks in the first four rounds.
at the very least i expect them to sign a veteran center. i just can’t see them drafting one and plugging him in as a starter. that’d be madness.
i was hoping they could just load up on defense with their first four picks, but cutting kendricks really puts that all up in the air. but it’s also a little bit exciting cuz they could potentially add an explosive tight end in the second round. bucky hodges would be like adding an explosive number one type receiver. especially in this offense. and for a fan base crying out for a big splash on that side of the football. well that’d be a great start.
so i expect them to sign a defensive end soon.
i still hold out hope that calais joins although jags supposedly offering 60 million for four years…
then tight end, outside linebacker, and db can be addresses in the draft.
March 10, 2017 at 2:17 pm #66120znModeratorthey’ve got four picks in the first four rounds.
Then they are clearing cap space to get the other things through free agency. AND they have nearly a dozen LBs plus DE-to-LB conversion candidates on the roster.
IMO and just IMO, naturally, but (so far) I don’t see big problems. To me this is all do-able.

i think it’s all doable too.
the hardest part is coaching that talent.
and if goff and gurley aren’t the superstar backfield we thought they were, none of that will matter anyway.

I agree. All the players cut or traded in this thread are easily replaceable with players already on the roster, through the draft or the rest of free agency. More cap space means another move or two is coming, looking forward to what it might be. I do notice that the Rams are completely out of Tre(y)s and that has to be addressed.

He didn’t have a great combine and may still be available in the 3rd or even the 4th.
I would love for them to pay Mangold and draft Elfein in the 3rd.
March 10, 2017 at 8:38 pm #66149znModeratorRams trade William Hayes to Miami, release three other players

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Rams freed up close to $16 million under the salary cap after parting ways with four key players late Thursday night.
William Hayes, one of their starting defensive ends, was traded to the Miami Dolphins along with a seventh-round selection (No. 223 overall), the team announced. In exchange, the Rams received the Dolphins’ sixth-round pick (206th) and saved $5.5 million.
The Rams also released starting center Tim Barnes, starting tight end Lance Kendricks and Eugene Sims, one of their key backups on the defensive line.
The four moves added up to $15.6 million in cap savings, much needed after the Rams nearly reached their ceiling by signing left tackle Andrew Whitworth and wide receiver Robert Woods earlier Thursday.
Kendricks’ departure could mean more targets for Tyler Higbee, a talented fourth-round pick in 2016, but the Rams are still in need of a center and more depth for their defensive line. They also need help at linebacker and safety and could use more talent at receiver.
The Hayes move was partly motivated by the Rams going from a 4-3 to a 3-4 scheme under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
Hayes, 31, was known largely for his infatuation with mermaids and his belief that dinosaurs never existed. But he was also a very productive member of one of the game’s most talented defensive lines, totaling 26½ sacks in his five-year stint with the Rams.
“Will has been an integral member of our defense since he became a Ram in 2012,” Rams general manager Les Snead said in a statement. “His passion set the tone for our defense and served as an example for his teammates. Off the field, he showed compassion as he was a major contributor to the St. Louis and Los Angeles communities, working to improve the plight of the homeless. We wish Will and his family the best of luck in all of his future endeavors.”
With the Hayes trade, the Rams enter the 2017 draft with eight selections, though only one of them will come within the first 68.

vI think of it more as a a corrective partial reassembly. You know, a CPR.
Actually IMO they inherited too many young players to rebuild.
Many of the cuts (Reynolds, Kendricks, Hayes, Barnes) are actually pre-2012 guys.
