Rams, OLB Dante Fowler agree to terms on new contract

    Myles Simmons

    https://www.therams.com/news/rams-olb-dante-fowler-agree-to-terms-on-new-contract

In advance of the free agency period opening next Wednesday, the Rams have kept one of the best pass rushers off the market by agreeing to terms on a new contract with outside linebacker Dante Fowler. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Los Angeles acquired Fowler in a trade deadline deal on Oct. 30, sending a third and fifth-round pick to Jacksonville for Fowler’s services. The 2015 No. 3 overall pick was instrumental in the Rams’ run to Super Bowl LIII, recording 2.0 sacks, five quarterback hits, and four tackles for loss in the regular season, as well as 1.5 sacks, four tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits in the postseason.

Overall, Fowler has recorded 16.0 sacks, four forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, 18 tackles for loss, and 27 quarterback hits in three regular seasons between Jacksonville and L.A. While Fowler missed his rookie season in 2015 after suffering an ACL tear during the Jaguars’ rookie minicamp, he’s since played each game for which he was eligible — including nine regular season and postseason starts for the Rams.

The Rams and OLB Dante Fowler have agreed to terms on a new contract before the start of free agency. A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that it is a one-year deal. Fowler joined the team midseason after he was traded from the Jacksonville Jaguars, but was set to become an unrestricted free agent. In 8 regular season games, Fowler had 2 sacks, a pass deflection and a forced fumble. He also had a key pressure in overtime of the NFC Championship game that forced Drew Brees into an errant throw that S John Johnson III intercepted. The Rams have settled two pressing offseason needs before the start of free agency by agreeing to terms with Fowler and signing safety Eric Weddle.

    What happens to Dante?
    This happens to Dante.

    .
If Dante has a big year he can cash in big time next year, much more that he can this year with a limited resume. So the Rams get to have a viable if not great edge rusher for one more year. imo
    .
I guess for about $8 million?

$14 million, I consider that a bit high, but it is just one year.

I’m looking at Michael Brockers to be traded or cut. Me thinks the reason Brockers has not been cut, is the Rams may have some trades to evaluate. Just a thought.

Could happen, but we only have 5 defensive linemen. I am probably more for keeping Brockers than most.

Saving 10.25 Million though. There are some really good DEs later in the draft. My gut is telling me, we are trading down in the draft.

i still think brockers has value on this team.

i don’t like this fowler signing though. not even at one year. either they didn’t like anyone in free agency or there wasn’t enough interest on the other end. or the numbers were too high for their liking. maybe they see something in fowler, but i wasn’t impressed with what i saw on the field.

I hope they don’t cut or trade Brockers. They don’t have many options behind him. I understand that this is a deep draft for the defensive front, but I think Brockers is too talented to let go of. Last season wasn’t his best, but he gets a pass from me due to fact that he was coming off of the MCL tear he suffered vs. Atlanta in the playoffs.

When I saw it was a one year deal for Fowler I thought that the two sides probably worked off the tag number for DE (~17 million). So I’m not surprised with 14 million. Although, I doubt it actually ends up being 14 million.

Starting to hear rumors that Fowler’s deal is closer to $11 million( Schefter on ESPN? ). Maybe $14 million includes incentives? Sooner or later we will get the exact figures.

$14 million is about what his 5th year option would have been.

Report: Dante Fowler Jr.'s one-year deal with Rams is worth $14M

Report: Dante Fowler Jr.’s one-year deal with Rams is worth $14M

By: Cameron DaSilva | 1 hour ago

The Los Angeles Rams are in desperate need of outside pass-rush help and late Sunday night, they took the first step toward addressing it. They agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Dante Fowler Jr., keeping him in Los Angeles for another season and preventing him from hitting free agency on Wednesday.

Giving him a one-year contract to allow him to prove himself is a smart move, considering his lack of overall production in the NFL and his limited time in the Rams’ system. He played just 11 total games with L.A. last season, recording 3.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss.

That one-year deal won’t come cheap, though. According to Ian Rapoport, Fowler’s contract is worth $14 million for just the 2019 season.

As Rapoport states, that’s about the value of what would’ve been the fifth-year option for Fowler. The Rams didn’t have the chance to exercise it because they acquired him after the Jaguars had already declined it, but they clearly feel good about paying him a significant amount of money.

The exact structure of the deal is unknown up to this point, but considering it’s only for one season, it’s highly likely that most of the money is guaranteed. The Rams may have built incentives into the contract to make it worth up to $14 million, but either way, Fowler is going to get paid in 2019.

Los Angeles could’ve placed the franchise tag on Fowler and paid him $15.4 million, which wouldn’t have been much more to guarantee him staying for another year. However, the Rams were able to save some money by locking him up to a one-year deal, albeit an expensive one.

FYI on Dante Fowler/#Rams contract: The deal is worth as much as $14 million, depending on incentives earned. Think of it this way: If he has a great year, he will have earned back the fifth-year number the #Jaguars didn’t pick up on his rookie deal

I don’t think Fowler is special though. I want a 16 sack guy on the edge and I don’t think he’s it.

I would just a soon have him as Suh. So, there is that. lol I am OK with the signing. Let’s see what he does.

I’m ok with the signing too. He’s a decent edge player, and the Rams only signed him to a one year ‘prove it’ deal.

But I want a dynamic, Kevin Greene type guy on the edge. Someone to compliment Aaron Donald’s inside push. Fowler will flash on occasion, but he’s not going to be a guy that can get 16 sacks. They need two OLBs, and I’m ok with Fowler being one of them, but I still want an impact player on the edge.

i’m just not happy with the signing at all.

now i realize that an impact pass rusher woulda cost more than 14 million.

but i just don’t think fowler was worth even 14 million. i don’t know. we’ll see.

see now i woulda rather spent the money on barr. he signed for about 5 years at less than 16 per?

i woulda offered him that. then put him at edge rusher, and i think he blossoms.
