Now, I know the qb stuff is controversial around the net. I see all sorts of “why not start Davis” posts. But I am not arguing with anyone…just talking from my own way of seeing it.
Recent Rams qbs?
The way the offense is starting to mature, including things like Quick emerging, can you imagine them with a healthy Bradford? The way he was zinging them?
Hill looked good to me until execution errors took over (including his INT but also including drops and penalties). I trust he will look good again.
Davis was so unready against the Vikes, it was hard to imagine we would get the poised kid we got against the Bux. But we did. If he can keep this up, Rams will have a very interesting qb situation next year when they get Bradford back, and, presumably, also, draft someone…plus Keenum is in that mix too.
Clemens was a gutty leader and my hat’s off to him, but he was just not accurate past 20 yards (past 20 he had a completion percentage of 23.8% last year. In comparison, so far as a Ram Hill has been at 50%…small sample size sure but it’s obvious if you saw him, it’s valid).
So that’s it.
Since Oct. 20 last year, we have seen 4 different qbs start for the Rams. That’s how I rank them.
September 16, 2014 at 7:06 am #7562PA RamParticipantOkay–but two weeks from now–AFTER Davis has another good game, gets another victory–or if it’s longer, two victories–is there a controversy then? IF that happens, you can bet that until Hill goes out and performs well, and gets a victory there will be controversy–and even if Hill does that, fans may want the younger guy.
What if Davis gets even better?
I know that Fisher doesn’t want it–but depending on what happens, it may happen anyway.
If Davis stinks the next game it won’t matter…although some people will want to see Keenum.
It’s just how this year is gonna be unless the Rams win with a guy and he looks good and they’re rolling. If that stops there will be unrest. Questions. Controversy.

IF he’s healthy. I think a Good defense (Seattle)
that game-plans for Austin Davis
would cause two or three INTs.I’ll keep sayin this too, though — its about the OLine,
not the QB. The OLine is the biggest problem
on the team right now. Not the QB.w

I’m not seeing the playoffs anyway this year with these QB’s. They just need to improve as a team over time this year.

And we don’t really know what we have in Davis. I hope we have a young QB in the making. However, one game isn’t the be all and end all.
Let’s not forget that Hill makes throws that Davis doesn’t. That was apparent live. Davis can hit certain routes, but they didn’t even ASK him to throw certain balls that they feel comfortable asking Hill to throw.
I’ll believe in Fisher until he gives me a reason to believe otherwise…

Me too. I call em as I see em too.
And, I don’t agree.
Which is fine. This ain’t no 4 o’clock old ladies tea party. Sometimes folks disagree.

I never knew Hill was ever “rated” as anything more than a solid veteran backup QB.
No one is “overrating” him.

Can you expand on that?
I have been in other discussions, where I say there are throws they don’t ask Davis to make (like deep sideline passes or deep digs or deep outs).
That’s what I thought I saw anyway.

Shawn Hill’s 1st career start: 22 for 27, 81.5% completion rate; 1 TD; 106 rating while playing for MIke Nolan with Jim Hostler as OC and his most productive WR was Michael Robinson, I don’t even know who he is….
Austin “Powers” Davis 1st career start: 22 for 29 75.9% completion rate; 0 TD 99 rating
Jim Hostler: As offensive coordinator for the 49ers, he was subject to much scrutiny and criticism regarding his playcalling. Among his most common criticisms was his inability to effectively use star running back Frank Gore, who led the National Football Conference (NFC) in rushing in 2006, but under Hostlers’ play calling, was largely ineffective.[1][2] Gore publicly criticized Hostler, saying the team did not trust his play calling.[3] Midway into the 2007 season, the 49ers’ offense was ranked last in the NFL, and the 49ers’ rushing offense, ranked sixth the previous year, was ranked near the bottom of the league after eight games under Hostler’s direction. Under Hostlers’ direction, the 49ers fell behind every team in the league in the categories of total offense, yards passing, and yards per play
September 18, 2014 at 1:53 pm #7790ZooeyModeratorHill is the starter this year unless he performs poorly multiple times. Davis, if he continues to play well, may be playing to replace Hill as the #2 next year. And they aren’t going to keep both Keenum and Gilbert on the roster next year. There’s really all kinds of ways this can play out before next year since there are so many QBs, and possibly another rookie added in the draft. The current 4 QBs are playing for no more than 2 spots next year. One spot if the Rams draft a QB.
September 18, 2014 at 6:32 pm #7808rflParticipantThe Hill/Davis comparison is interesting.
I see Hill as a more or less complete QB. That is, he can make virtually all the throws you need to be able to make. He doesn’t have an elite arm, but he has an average one, which, in the NFL, is a good thing. And he has a lot of experience and can make good reads.
He appears to be a capable leader. But not necessarily an inspiring one. I think he handles defensive pressure capably without necessarily being able to face down serious heat.
Davis is largely the opposite. He really seems to be much more of an inspiring leader, as Clemens was. But he is much better than Clemens was standing in there and making tough throws under pressure. Some of the throws he made while being hit were really impressive, the kind of thing great QBs do.
He also has a better arm than Clemens had. He can throw downfield in ways Clemens simply could not. The offense is considerably more potent with Davis than it was with Clemens.
But, his arm is probably not in Hill’s, middle-of-the-pack range. At least, I haven’t yet seen that it is. I agree with those in the thread who say he can’t really be asked to make all the throws that a solid NFL QB like Hill is asked to make. I see Davis as somewhere between Hill and Clemens, probably closer to Hill, maybe potentially on a par with Hill, but not yet.
So, for me, the Ram offense will be able to do some nice things with either Hill or Davis. They probably have room to grow with their WRs. I love, for example, the way we are starting to run quick (pun is OK here) slants to big, physical receivers. Teams do that to us all the time. We are starting to take the pressure off with 6-8 yard slants that are tough to stop. Keep that up, and it will affect the way teams scheme against us.
But, with either of these guys, the ceiling will be limited. Both can run an efficient offense with a good running game. But neither will be able to get us to the Red Zone 4-5 times a game or throw 2+ TDs. We just don’t have the horse at QB to do that sort of thing.
We better have a genuine QB with a major league arm available to us in next year’s draft. We gonna need it.
By virtue of the absurd ...
