Just curious. IMO I think football fans-especially the hard core ones-tend to be conservative in their political beliefs even what some would call “right wing”. I’m not sure that is true with hard core baseball fans and I have no idea as to basketball fans.

Anyone care to share their opinion on this?

I dunno. Maybe the more ‘hawkish’ one is,
the more likely one is to enjoy ‘violent’ sports
like football and MMA and boxing, etc. I dunno.
    Its possible.

NASCAR seems to be a rightie thing, in general,
    according to some.

I’ve learned to be real careful about such ‘assumptions’ though.
Sometimes the assumptions just dont hold up.

Yeah-I’ve made plenty of those wrong assumptions. The reason I asked the question is because on the HERD board I’ve been posting about the issues re spousal abuse, child abuse, concussions, etc and I’ve gotten a lot of responses about its media blowing stuff out of context, don’t discount the now wife started it, blah, blah-very protective of the players in general. Then I got a response today from someone who stated “facts” from blog called “RedState.com saying the whole child and spousal abuse thing and concussion is just part of a “liberal agenda”.

My problem is I don’t suffer fools gladly. So I engage and before long it’s out of hand. Anyway, my wife says “people are people and you may think their dumb and maybe they are but you won’t change how they think with debate and you may even piss them off more. So grow up and let it go”. That’s pretty much an actual quote from her.

Well, as you know, each board has its unique history
    and ambiance.

A lot of us remember the old wars over ‘politics’
on the various Pol Boards. Each of us involved
    in those…um…’discussions’ probably came away
with unique lessons from that experience.
I learned that it is pointless for ‘me’ to discuss
    politics with people who significantly-different
politix from me. So, i just stopped.
Others came to different conclusions, I’m sure.

My problem is I want to win. I want to show them how dumb they are. I want to ask questions they can’t answer. Blah blah blah. And I’m not really that smart where I can always accomplish that. So what have I accomplished other than get me so depressed about people that I look for some support. I honestly wish I could just accept people for who they are even if I think they are dumb, uneducated or whatever. I think I would be a lot happier.

Now this post is fueled with some good wine and ice cream-so take it for what it’s worth.

Well, we all think we are right.
    Ya know.
And of course, only “I” am.

I have wondered the same thing over the years.

I’m not sure the herd is a representative sample, though. They ran off all political dissidents, and a good chunk of liberals a while ago. I mean, the same question is discussed here, and we are all football fans, and the overall attitude is different here. So if you just read this board, you would think football fans tend to be part of the liberal conspiracy.

It is something, though, that domestic violence is seen as a part of the liberal agenda. What does that even mean? My guess is that righties are more comfortable, generally speaking, with violent “solutions” than liberals are. I think that’s true.

But as for the demographics of sports fans…I dunno. I bet somebody has done a study on that, though.

Different boards are different communities. This one discusses the domestic abuse issue on its merits. If you go to the pD board, you get stories about how guys hit women and it was okay in their case cause the women started it and you have to defend yourself so why are we complaining about Rice. That’s not the majority–in fact, the PD board consists of several loud competing vocal minorities. Sometimes I like to debate those things with people who have diametrically opposed views, cause if nothing else, I think there are lurkers who would appreciate seeing several perspectives, so I jump in on that. That’s not the whole story but it’s part of it–another part of me just wants to champion what I think are important ideas and/or truths. Michael Sam led to a lot of that. It ended up as sexuality is a matter of choice v. no it’s not.

This board btw is not like the old huddle politics board–although it has many of the same people, unlike before, it’s moderated. Makes a difference.

yeah-I got into it over the Michael Sam thing as well. And I’m more like you in terms of challenging opinions I think are foolish and even dumb. But I then get mad and it’s no longer fun and often quite distasteful.

I am trying more and more, and more, and more, to not get mad in those discussions. I keep thinking, there’s lurkers who want to hear guys from the side I am on, and they will want it to look good. They’ll want us to embody as well as speak for good reasoning.

One of the things that kept coming up was, there’s no gay gene. The response to that was, there’s no one gene for anything, and also more and more scientific literature is showing that in utero biochemistry and brain development have an effect on this. So they think someone said “there’s a gay gene,” and so then they refer us to sources that “refute” that, and that’s supposed to nail the issue shut. Well it turns out…not so much.

Anyway, I wasn’t alone. Far from it. I think the majority advocated gay rights. Those are mostly diehard Rams fans. So no I don’t think all football fans are automatically dismissive of that view.

Good thoughts as to the lurkers.

My problem w/ the Sam thing was more about football. To me it was a set up. NFL told Fisher take the guy so we don’t have to explain and then you can cut him in the end-just make sure its in the end. Any draftee you expect can help your team. Those that are released show you in pre -season that they can’t.But Sam played better than anyone thought. So why release him if it wasn’t a set up. IMO he should have been on the roster let alone the PS-especially now with Long out we could use a speed rusher from the edge. Then Jones steps to the plate and signs him to the PS. He’s still not on the roster. So the NFL has effectively shelved him for no other reason than he’s gay. Anyhow, that’s how I would argue the case in front of a judge or jury.

When I began posting my opinions on the Herd it became very political with most saying he was terrible and never should have been drafted. Well-how do they know from just watching the little screen? To me most didn’t want their favorite sport and favorite team associated in any way with a gay player. Now there were certainly exceptions with several fans saying they hoped he would make the team. I acknowledge that. But for the most part there was a clear element of machoism that seemed to me to be a product of age. Like the guy wearing the Rice jersey on MNF for all to see. “Hey-try and tell me what not to do-huh”. At my age I hate that crap.

I don’t agree with that W. Westbrooks outplayed Sam, and this is one of the deepest DE units in the game. I think his odds of making the squad were always low.

I believe it was all along exactly what they said. He was too much value to pass up with the 7th pick. They then gave him an opportunity, and Westbrooks is just better–and a better all-around athlete.

Opportunity means you have a real chance to compete. He got that, I think.

Yes keep posting. I was a lurker on the herd Pol board when 9-11 happened and appreciated the enlightenment.

In regards to sports /political affiliation….Bill Mahr stated that the NFL with the salary cap, revenue sharing and the draft with the weakest team getting the 1st round pick is a “socialist” sport.
