znModerator10 Observations from Rams’ first OTA practice of 2025 offseason program: Excused Puka Nacua absence, Davante Adams, Jordan Whittington and Tutu Atwell’s playmaking, and more
Stu Jackson
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – The Rams held their first OTA practice on Wednesday. While wide receiver Puka Nacua was not on the field due to an excused absence, that afforded additional snaps and opportunities to fellow receivers Davante Adams, Tutu Atwell and Jordan Whittington to build their connection with quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Here are some of the notes and observations from it:
1) Nacua excused absence due to “special trip” with family: McVay said the wide receiver had been in communication about this trip a couple months in advance and is returning from it today, which is why he wasn’t on the field for the team’s OTA workout. (And it’s worth reiterating these workouts are voluntary until minicamp).
2) Kyren Williams present for OTAs: Even as the Rams running back heads into the final year of his contract, he was present for the team’s first OTA workout of the spring.
“Kyren has been the same stud that we know,” head coach Sean McVay said. “Great demeanor, great willingness to come out here, to work, to be able to get better. He’s been great in terms of our communication. It means a lot, just because, you don’t minimize those things are real, and those are real things that guys have to navigate.”
3) Extended look at Stafford-Adams connection: Nacua’s absence naturally created more opportunities for Matthew Stafford to look new wide receiver Davante Adams’ way throughout team drills Wednesday. The tempo and body control Adams is known for playing with was on display on one pass he snared from Stafford over the middle during 11-on-11 work.
4) Competitive mix: As added context, the Rams maintained the same approach with pitting the projected first-team offense against the first-team defense, first-team offense against the second-team defense and vice-versa, and so on.
5) Play of the day: Stafford had a deep touchdown pass over the middle to wide receiver Tutu Atwell, with Atwell displaying the speed he’s known for when given the opportunity to make plays.
6) Play of the day, Part II: Nacua’s absence also meant more opportunities for second-year receiver Jordan Whittington on Wednesday. His best catch of the day was a leaping, two-handed grab on a corner route toward the sideline.
7) Getting to see what Forbes can do: Third-year cornerback Emmanuel Forbes didn’t see a ton of action after being claimed late last season off waivers from the Commanders, at least until Week 18 against Seattle when Los Angeles rested its starters and gave him 52 defensive snaps and four special teams snaps, according to Pro Football Focus (McVay said Wednesday he thought Forbes “did some really good stuff” in that game). On Wednesday, he intercepted a Jimmy Garoppolo pass intended for wide receiver Xavier Smith on an out-breaking route near the sideline.
8) Jolly on the spot: Cornerback Shaun Jolly corralled an interception Wednesday on a Matthew Stafford pass.
Playmaking like that from Jolly and Forbes is likely why McVay said he feels really good about the development of the group, and where the secondary as a whole is at.
9) Derion Kendrick participating: McVay said it was “good to see” the fourth-year cornerback out there. Kendrick’s season ended prematurely last year due to a torn ACL sustained in the first week of camp.
10) Special visitor: Lakers coach JJ Redick took in Wednesday’s OTA workout, and also spoke with Rams players.
Rams head coach Sean McVay said he first connected with Redick prior to him getting the Lakers job, and that he “always respected him from afar.”
“A well-thought-out guy, a great willingness to look inwardly (for) areas of improvement, understanding how you bring people together,” McVay said. “Really enjoyed him coming out.”

After half an OTA, it appears the Rams will opt to keep the “Tutu down there somewhere” concept in the playbook for 2025.Didn’t see everything (and understand even less), but a few notable highlights today at Rams OTAs courtesy of:
Tutu Atwell
Konata Mumphfield
Emmanuel Forbes
Shaun Jolly
Jordan WhittingtonBiggest impression was they got after it. Was a blast to watch live football again.

znModeratorfrom Rodrigue, https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6389112/2025/05/28/rams-kyren-williams-at-otas-amid-healthy-ongoing-contract-talks-other-notes/
notes from the Rams’ first day of organized team activities (OTAs)
(As a reminder, the team enforces a media policy that prohibits reporting specifics about the depth chart, plays and formations or other such details.)
• McVay was asked again whether the Rams remain open to trading for Dolphins star cornerback Jalen Ramsey after Miami expressed a willingness to facilitate a trade this offseason. Again, the head coach didn’t rule out the possibility or downplay the Rams’ interest, saying, “We would never close out those opportunities,” but added that the Rams and Dolphins have not recently had “meaningful” dialogue on the matter.
McVay also said he doesn’t believe the team needs to add more players to the secondary (outside of Ramsey, who would be a unique case) and cited cornerback Emmanuel Forbes’ development after arriving in L.A. late last season and cornerback Derion Kendrick’s return to the field (Kendrick can play outside or in the slot). Forbes did jump a route during a team period and intercepted backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
• Third year star receiver Puka Nacua had an excused absence from Wednesday’s practice as he returns from a trip with his mother. Second-year receiver Jordan Whittington took on a significant portion of Nacua’s workload and made several tough catches across the middle and sealed off the edge on more than one occasion during run plays, which drew praise from some coaches. (Note that real contact is not allowed during these practices.)
• Veteran receivers Davante Adams and Tutu Atwell also made their presence felt. In seven-on-sevens, Adams stretched vertically for a contested catch won against Kendrick. Meanwhile, Atwell caught a deep pass for a touchdown after getting two steps on his defender in 11-on-11s. Rookie seventh-round pick Konata Mumpfield made a tough catch in coverage, with a second defender closing down over the top of his route.
• Inside linebacker Omar Speights and safeties Kamren Kinchens and Quentin Lake worked to the side with athletic training staff during part of the team period.
• Right tackle Rob Havenstein is not practicing as he recovers from offseason procedures on both shoulders. He said earlier this spring that he expects to be ready for training camp. The Rams have been developing third-year offensive lineman Warren McClendon as a backup swing tackle.
• Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick attended Wednesday’s practice and spoke with the team. “There’s so much crossover in leadership and the platform that we’re blessed to be able to have,” said McVay, who initially met Redick shortly before the latter accepted the Lakers job in 2024.

znModerator3 Observations on Rams OTA No. 1
https://www.si.com/nfl/rams/konata-mumpfield-los-angeles-sean-mcvay-emmanuel-forbes-davante-adams
The Los Angeles Rams were flying at OTAs and we were on sight to observe it all. Here are three observations from Wednesday’s activities.
1. Konata Mumpfield made himself known
Konata Mumpfield was absolutely brilliant on the day. He showed off his ball tracking skills on an underthrown pass by Jimmy Garoppolo, but it was a constant ability to snatch balls out of the sky that truly exemplified how he dazzled.
Mumpfield was consistent in his approach and execution, putting together some great film as he battles for his opportunities.
Mumpfield is a legitimate NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate. His skills from college have not only translated, but with improved quarterback play, those skills have evolved. His candidacy will likely depend not on whether he’s able to execute on opportunities, but is more dependent on opportunities being called to come his way.
2. The Defensive Back room is putting in the work
Sean McVay made sure to mention how important it was to have Ahkello Witherspoon at OTAs. Witherspoon missed the last two OTAs despite being on the Rams roster during the 2023 and 2024 season as both times he was signed after the start of the regular season.
McVay also commented on Cobie Durant’s development while Emmanuel Forbes and Shaun Jolly made interceptions during team periods. Jolly intercepted a pass, making an athletic grab while diving to the ground after the receiver in front of him slipped, while Forbes was in the right position to not only snag the ball but stayed on his feet to make a return.
Jolly is fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster while Forbes looks to improve after not meeting expectations with the Washington Commanders and failing to break into the Rams’ defense due to his late arrival to the team.
3. Davante Adams is simply that dude.
Adams is already a favorite of Matthew Stafford as the two men work to develop their consistency and chemistry. Adams made play after play, notably using his body to box out Derion Kendrick on a bullet fired towards him. Perhaps Stafford has modern versions of Calvin Johnson and Cooper Kupp in Adams and Puka Nacua.
Adams and the offense took care of business in practice, but in the same breath, defensive coordinator Chris Shula and assistant head coach Aubrey Pleasant had the defense humming, flying to the ball. It was a great day of iron sharpening iron with effort levels going through the roof.

znModeratorRising Rams Player Has Caught McVay’s Attention in OTAs
https://www.si.com/nfl/rams/los-angeles-jordan-whittington-sean-mcvay-matthew-stafford-davante-adams
The Los Angeles Rams’ offseason has been filled with notable additions. The Rams have added talent across the board, as they aim to pick up where they left off last season. After a disappointing playoff loss that was nearly a win, the Rams look poised to march back to the postseason.
The Rams’ roster has taken strides this offseason. Los Angeles has many new faces, but a player who was already on the roster has arrived at Organized Team Activities exceptionally prepared.
Rams Head Coach Sean McVay credited second-year wide receiver Jordan Whittington with a strong showing in OTAs.
“It’s funny, I was just talking to him out on the field. What I think is great is when guys put the work in and they just continue to show I’m getting better and better and I’m creating value, whether that’s on teams or whether that’s doing a great job within his role as a receiver, you can see the accumulation of experiences led to a confidence, ability to be able to fill in when needed,” McVay said.
“Thought he had a really good day today. You can see he’s just got a real comfort level in terms of what’s being asked. What’s the intent of some of these plays? What are the route nuances, and where do I fit within these concepts? And so I’ve just been really proud of the progress, the maturity. But when you talk to people, going back to his time at Texas, this is who he’s been. He’s been all that and more with us, and today was an excellent step in the right direction for him.”
McVay reportedly entered the offseason desiring to make the Rams’ offense more explosive. The addition of Davante Adams undoubtedly helps make that happen. However, Matthew Stafford has a history of assisting lesser-known wide receivers to excel. He will need to do so again this season.
The Rams have one of the best rosters in the league, but it will take every player on the roster to help Los Angeles make the type of postseason run many believe they are capable of. They have one of the best head coaches and quarterbacks in the league to help make it happen.
Still, up-and-coming players like Whittington will be vital to the Rams’ chances of success this upcoming season. The future looks bright in Los Angeles; time will tell how bright that future is.

znModerator10 Observations from Rams’ second open 2025 OTA practice: Tutu Atwell capitalizing on opportunities, Emmanuel Forbes’ playmaking and Terrance Ferguson’s touchdown catch
Stu Jackson
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – The Rams held their second OTA practice on Tuesday. Wide receiver Tutu Atwell made the most of the opportunities that went his way, cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. effectively picked up where he left off in the first OTA practice, and rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson had one of the best catches of the day.
Here are some of the notes and observations from it:
1) Foundational context: As mentioned in the first 10 observations of the spring, Los Angeles mixes it up in team drills with the projected first-team offense facing the projected second-team defense, the projected second-team offense facing the projected first-team defense, and so on.
2) Atwell’s reliable hands: The fifth-year wide receiver made noise in the first OTA practice for hauling in a deep touchdown pass from quarterback Matthew Stafford, but today it was for his success on the other end of Stafford’s short and intermediate throws, catching the first four passes thrown his way.
3) Forbes continues to shine: A pass breakup early in team drills on a Jimmy Garoppolo pass intended for rookie wide receiver Mario Williams drew praise from head coach Sean McVay afterward. Between that moment and Forbes’ interception in the first OTA practice, the third-year cornerback has impressed this spring.
4) Stafford sharp: What you’d expect from a 17-year veteran quarterback, but the biggest example of this was the way he threaded the needed between multiple defenders for his first completion to Atwell. He later had a pinpoint throw to wide receiver Britain Covey in team drills.
5) Play of the day: Stafford connecting with tight end Terrance Ferguson on a back-shoulder throw in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown during the team’s competitive “mamba” period during red zone drills.
6) Play of the day, Part II: After misconnecting with running back Kyren Williams on a potential touchdown, Stafford zipped the ball through a tight window over the middle to tight end Tyler Higbee for the touchdown the very next play in that same mamba period.
7) Almost: Veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon nearly came up with an interception on the very first play of team drills when Garoppolo’s pass went through wide receiver Britain Covey’s hands and almost into his.
8) Almost, Part II: Forbes was also active in the mamba period, nearly picking off a juggled pass.
9) Fiske in action: Defensive end Braden Fiske was an active participant in Tuesday’s workout.
“He’s been awesome, he’s gotten out there on the grass, taken a few reps these last few days, and he just looks like himself,” defensive coordinator Chris Shula said.
10) Another special guest in attendance: Rams legend and former left tackle Andrew Whitworth was on hand for Tuesday’s workout, taking some time to give pointers to the offensive linemen before watching practice from the sidelines.

InvaderRamModeratoremmanuel forbes. i like that we keep hearing his name. i almost forgot about him. he was widely ranked as a first or second round caliber draft pick and a top 5 to top 10 cornerback in that draft class. wow. i just wonder why washington gave up on him less than halfway through his sophomore season. i see articles citing lack consistency and progress. but he was only in his second year. were there attitude issues? but then i read nothing of that with the rams. if he succeeds with the rams that’ll look real bad on the commanders.

znModerator7 takeaways from Rams OTAs: Forbes impressing, Nacua improving
Cameron DaSilva
The Los Angeles Rams wrapped up OTAs this week and are now preparing for minicamp in Maui. OTAs didn’t involve any hitting or pads, but the Rams were able to run 11-on-11 drills and ramp up the competition level a bit.
Things will continue to heat up in minicamp and eventually training camp as the Rams get ready for the 2025 season, which is shaping up to be one with Super Bowl potential. Now that OTAs are in the books, here are seven things we learned from the last three weeks of practice.
Emmanuel Forbes has bulked up and stood out
Sean McVay said this week that Forbes is “bulking up,” which is a good sign for the young cornerback who came into the NFL with concerns about his weight and overall frame. It’s still early in the offseason because the pads haven’t even come on yet and players still aren’t hitting, but he’s made a strong impression on the coaching staff.
“He’s got great movement. He’s got a really good concept trigger,” McVay said. “You can see the ball production where he’s doing things that had never been done before at the collegiate level in terms of being able to get your hands on the ball and then go score. I’ve really been pleased with him. There’s been a lot of positive guys that have really stood out or really kind of taken their game to another level. I’m looking forward to seeing once we put the pads on and getting into some of the preseason games, let’s continue to apply that. But been really pleased with Emmanuel and he’s done a great job.”
With the cornerback spot wide open, Forbes has a chance to carve out a role in the secondary this season.
Braden Fiske’s knee is good to go
Fiske underwent a minor procedure on his knee this offseason after getting hurt in the January playoff loss to the Eagles. There was no real concern about him missing time in 2025 but OTAs have been really encouraging for the second-year defensive lineman.
Fiske said he’s ahead of schedule in his rehab and is already a full-go in practice, feeling no limitations or ill effects from the offseason surgery. He’s poised for a big year in 2025 after leading the team in sacks last season.
Davante Adams having a positive impact on and off the field
Adams and Matthew Stafford have been building chemistry on the practice field this offseason as the veteran receiver enters his first year with the Rams. He’s already having an impact on his new team, both as a pass catcher and in the locker room.
Puka Nacua has talked about how much advice Adams has shared already, while McVay has raved about his football intelligence in the film room and in practice. As a receiver who’s been in the league for more than a decade, Adams has seen a bevvy of coverages and defensive techniques, so he’s as experienced as they come.
“The way he sees the game is pretty impressive,” McVay said. “He sees the game through a quarterback lens and he’s got so many experiences and really understands it from an all-22 perspective. A lot of it is asking questions about things that maybe I’ve seen over the course of his career or how do we apply it? Or how is it similar to maybe things I’ve seen him do? But he loves football. There’s a consistent passion. There’s a real understanding of how it all kind of fits together, the spacing, timing, rhythm. We talk about other stuff outside of football, but the way that his mind works, I’ve really enjoyed being able to learn from him as well.”
Kyren Williams and Rams still negotiating extension
Williams is entering the final year of his rookie contract so he’s eligible for a new deal. His camp and the Rams’ brass have been negotiating an extension all offseason, though no deal has come together yet.
The good news is Williams hasn’t missed a single practice and there’s no indication he plans to hold out. McVay expects full attendance at minicamp in Maui and he’s happy to have Williams continuing to work every day.
“He’s been here, been leading, been doing exactly what Kyren does,” McVay said. “And so, been pleased. We’ll see if there’s an opportunity to be able to land that plane.”
No movement on Jalen Ramsey trade front
Ramsey remains available for a trade and hasn’t yet been moved by the Dolphins. The Rams have been one of the teams frequently linked to Ramsey but it doesn’t seem like they’re especially motivated to get a deal done.
McVay provided an update this week and said the Rams “haven’t had a lot of those discussions” about Ramsey, suggesting maybe their interest has cooled. McVay has also expressed confidence in the cornerbacks the Rams already have so he seems comfortable with their current group.
Nate Landman’s communication has caught Chris Shula’s eye
No one should be surprised if Landman winds up being a starting linebacker for the Rams in Week 1. He was one of their free-agent additions this offseason, coming over from the Falcons where he played for Jimmy Lake and Raheem Morris.
Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula has been impressed by his communication in the middle of the defense, so perhaps he’s someone who could be a candidate to wear the green dot as the signal caller.
“Nate Landman has been excellent with his communication on the second level. We had heard great things about him from Atlanta,” Shula said.
Puka Nacua has improved his route running
As good as Nacua has been in his first two seasons, there’s always room for improvement. He worked hard again this offseason, training with Cooper Kupp, Tyler Higbee and Jordan Whittington, putting him on track for another strong year in 2025.
Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur has seen Nacua develop his route running and mentioned the excellent shape Nacua is in, saying he’s “cutting a little bit better than he was a year ago.”
“I just think he’s just fine-tuned some things. I think if we watched his routes on air from a year ago, I think he’s cutting a little bit better than he was a year ago. I think he’s breaking down a little bit better. He’s always had incredible hands. That’s an elite skill set of his on top of toughness and his physicality. But I think he’s even more confident.”

vI think McVay basically means that Forbes can see the design of an offensive play pre-snap and as a defender knows what to do in response.
This is what the google AI bot says about that:
In NFL football, a concept trigger for a defensive back is a visual cue or pattern recognition that prompts a specific reaction or adjustment in coverage or pursuit. These triggers can be based on offensive formation, receiver release, or even the quarterback’s footwork

We have no real indication but I doubt it. Will they even have “starters”? I just think they want 3 or 4 veteran CBs and then what they will do is play different packages with them. They want veterans because this will not be a case of shut down athletic corners taking receivers out of the game, it will be a case of smart guys being in the right place at the right time according to their reads…together with the safeties. That can work because the real defensive action is in the front 7.
If what I said is at all true, it’s kind of given away by their drafts. When was the last time they drafted a corner who stuck? Durant in 2022. In that same period, what about front 7 players who have stood out so far? 6 if Jackson is stepping up as indicated, plus 2 more in 2025. Making it 8 in 3 years:
Young
Turner
Johnson
Verse
Fiske
Jackson
Stewart
PaulNot being terribly football savvy in my terminology here, it just looks like they want physical dominance and aggression up front and smart experienced scheme players in the secondary.
In the secondary, that will include a lot of disguised coverages. Again, they need nerds for that (to exaggerate a bit) and not necessarily “corner of the year” type advanced pro bowlers.
Forbes fell apart in Washington. He lost confidence and was blowing assignments. Plus he was under weight at 167. Now he’s 180 and they are working on building his confidence.
