February 20, 2015 at 11:44 pm #18806PA RamParticipantI’ve seen a lot of these films but I haven’t seen the ‘gimmicky” “Boyhood”. I just have no interest in it.
That said, it’ll probably be between “Boyhood” and “Birdman” for Best Picture.
Out of the nominees, “Whiplash” gets my vote.
I agree on Moore–just for her body of work I’d love to see her win. But I didn’t think that the role in “Still Alice” should win over Rosamund Pike’s in “Gone Girl”.
I want Keaton to take the actor award.
And I know it’s a lock but I definitely want J.K. Simmons to win for supporting actor for “Whiplash”. I think that would be the most deserving of the actors I think will win.

2014 Oscar winning short – The CrushFebruary 22, 2015 at 4:22 pm #18883waterfieldParticipantHere’s an interesting article on how they pick the best picture which might surprise one.
http://www.goldderby.com/cms/view/209/
Apparently the “preference” method of voting does not insure the movie that gets the most 1st place votes wins. If a movie consistently garners a 2d place preference and the 1st place movie is placed below the second place movie on some ballots the 2d place movie wins apparently because it has the highest “value”. At least that’s how I get it.

Your favorite five movies,
Waterfield. (As of this second,
but subject to change ten seconds
after you’ve listed them)
What would they be?w
vFebruary 22, 2015 at 8:13 pm #18895waterfieldParticipantI’m assuming “favorite” means which ones I enjoyed the most in terms of ranking:
The Imitation Game
The Theory of Everything
Grand Budapest Hotel (just fun)
Wild
American Sniper (although I suppose it’s not an “enjoyable” movie-walked away from it in silence)
Birdman (another not “enjoyable” movie-dark, lonely, but well done. However, keep in mind WV-I actually enjoy movies on the Hallmark channel -so there.
I haven’t seen Whiplash, Foxcatcher, or Still Alice although I hear they are really great. I’m not into dark movies-I was forced to see Birdman and while it was a great film it’s not my type of movie. But I have a feeling it will garner a whole lot of Oscars. I also saw Sniper only because some friends wanted to see it with us and have dinner. But it was a very well done film-notwithstanding the political debate. Bring back the musicals ala “Chicago”.
I have to say this: It seems to me that there are more really done well movies out there now than ever before. Of course there are the crashing cars and explosion movies for young adults that make tons of dough for the studios.

Weird show…waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long.
Simmons won for “Whiplash” No real surprise. Well-deserved.
Arquette won for “Boyhood” No real surprise. Didn’t see it but she invested 12 years in it and frankly the other performances were nothing special.
Original screenplay to “Birdman”. Lots of dialogue. I thought it was an “okay” film more about the acting than the story itself…but I suppose the dialogue was good.
Adapted screenplay” “The Imitation Game” Not a bad film but nothing special. Not particularly memorable.
Director: Inarritu for “Birdman”. This was a well-directed film. It was dominated by its tracking shots.
Actor: Redmayne for “the Theory of Everything”. It really is a great performance. The guy becomes Hawking. I just wanted Keaton to win–don’t think he’ll get another chance. And he was also really good.
Actress: Moore for “Still Alice”. Good for her.
Film: Birdman. Can’t say I would have voted for it but I am not a member of the Academy so…what can you do?

Nice job, Zooey.
6 for 6.
You must really know your films.

The especially cool part is that I made up ballots for those six awards, and passed them out to my drama class. Everybody got to predict the winners with a prize promised to the person who got the most right. Nobody got more than 3 correct. Of course, kids marked the ones that they liked personally, but the academy voters are not 16 years old, so…
I got them all right, and everybody was very impressed.
And the best part is…I didn’t see any of the films in question. Not one of them.
I just went to a British online betting site and chose all the favorites according to the betting line.
So, I can’t really help you with Power Ball.
