Atlantic Ram
just my experience at Fedex Field.
Redskins came ready to play. Rams needed to stop the run… couldn’t do it. Rams just couldn’t match the intensity… Not sure if it was being shut out or if they took exception to last year’s coin toss captains… but they were ready to play. It appeared that for most of the game the Rams just went through the motions. It was hot in the sun… not sure if that was a factor or they were just flat. The Rams wanted to start fast but I guess that just meant for the first game.
Fans were generally cordial. We were in the club section which was nice for the most part. It was pretty loud overall but not enough to matter.
Foles looked bad. It definitely seemed like the difference maker. I don’t go to games very often so it took a while to get used to seeing the whole field. Austin was open by a mile in the first quarter. I didn’t see the pressure on Foles that I have seen reported here. One day when Foles can throw a good deep ball to Tavon the Rams will get a score from it… the fans around us were only concerned with Austin.
Most amusing thing at the game (and throughout the game) was a guy who shouted “Run it up the gut” literally every play when the skins had the ball. And it turns out that running the ball was a good plan but outside. There were empty seats so we ended up moving because I had my 5 year old there and the people behind us couldn’t talk without cursing… and also couldn’t talk without shouting… Club level in STL is definitely different than in DC.
A good day but a W would have been great. There were a few fights on our walk back to the car. Not sure how bad it would have been if the skins had lost.
I am not too disappointed. I don’t expect much from the Rams at this point. I think they are potentially a good team but something is stopping them from getting there. it will be interesting to watch the game on TV.

The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.
Sprinkles are for winners.

Well, I’m glad he’s not hanging his head. Obviously obsessing over a loss would not help matters. But quotes like that make me wonder if years of losing has desensitized the players to it. Maybe losing doesn’t bother them as much as it should.
I’m not saying that’s happened. I’m just sorta’ thinking out loud.

I was hopin’ Fisher would have exorcised that “hang dog” attitude already. Hate to think it might still exist.
Ennyhew, I’m displacing my dissatisfaction with the loss, with the realization that Bradford is 0-2, and Foles is 1-1.
Ergo, plus a couple of therefores, I can only conclude that we got the better of that trade.
Ahhhh, it feels good to be a winner… 😉

alyoshamucciI don’t know if everyone’s used to these yet, but if not, I’ll say up front that I am always more positive than the initial reports. Of course this means when I say something negative it’s pretty well deserved. lol
This game was not as bad for me as it was for others, and I think it’s likely a necessary step in our evolution this season. A couple things worried me, and those got me focused on some draft necessities. So all in all, not a loss without gain.
Note: I know that we came in expecting to trounce them, but this is the NFL. Also? I had no idea they were going to unleash Matt Jones this early in the season. Flip and I had him rated higher than the late 3rd where he got drafted because of his combination of size, power, and movement skills. If the Redskins start riding him when he’s hot, they could easily take that division.
Also note: I didn’t record this one, so this is one take, mostly on my phone. Not much O line stuff as a result.
The Good (there was no great this week)
1) I really liked Ogletree this game. I’ve been waiting for a game to see his maturity … this was it. Fought through blocks, shot gaps, and didn’t miss tackles.
2) Joyner … pretty much same as above. Lightning fast to the spot where he needs to be.
3) Chris Long was noticeably at full strength.
4) Just keeping track, Donald at 2.5 now.
5) TJ’s play early in the game, he missiled in and submarined the pulling OG. That was impressive.
6) Tavon is playing fast.
7) Our young O line had some issues in the run game, to put it mildly, but their pass pro was decent.
8) Bennie Cunningham is really a gift in the screen and check down game because when he turns upfield he’s bringing 220 pounds of fury with him. A check down at 4 yards on a 3rd and 8 may get us a first down half the time to him (or more).
9) Special teams coverage (specifically thinking of Mo) was on the spot.
10) Low penalties. I liked that.
11) The TD play. Quick change deep shot. The throw was in the right spot, with enough air. Foles stood as calm as a Hindu cow while the pocket was nipping at his backside. Great pocket creation by Hav and GRob. …
The Bad
12) __________ (fill in one of 6 names) CATCH THE FLIPPIN BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good lord I haven’t seen this many drops in years, wow. You don’t catch the ball you don’t get first downs, without first downs no TOP, without TOP your defense gets worn down. 4 drives, 14 plays to start the game?
13) Greg Williams you have to adjust faster. Now I didn’t watch in slo mo … and I’m NOT an offensive line coach … but it’s not the first time I’ve seen a team use a DT’s speed against him. By halfway through the second drive the plays started to seem tailored to sending Donald upfield away from where the play was going. There is no way he “just misses” 8 times in a row unless that’s what they are going for. GW has to regroup and get that fixed. This is why we seemed to have more success against the run with Westbrooks/Fairley in. I know we’re an “attack” defense … but we have to attack “what they are doing” rather than just the backfield. We figured it out by the second half it seemed, so that’s good if other teams try to do it to us, but then they had another strategy that we couldn’t beat. Maybe we were tired, or they were just firing on all cylinders … but their last drive was a statement. I was almost happy for them, lol.
14) Nick. Dude, the accuracy. I know it’s your first game outside this year, and maybe it was windy. But the short passes need to be ON the receiver and the intermediate ones need to give the receiver a shot. The drops were not alllll on the receivers.
15) Tre wasn’t fully ready (not injury wise, just focus and game speed), and Bennie should have been the primary back.
16) Janoris got caught biting. It happens but he’s gotta have situational awareness that guys are gonna do that to him a couple times a game.
17) Mcleod TERRIBLE angles on a couple plays.
18) JL, you’re first of all part to blame for the lack of recognition as to what was going on with Donald … and second you did not do a very good job mixing up the angles on the defensive front. They were firing off and finding us every time.
19) Refs, that’s PI in the end zone on Garcon. Janoris knew that was coming, was already planting to drive on it when Garcon’s arm fully extended. That shouldn’t even be a tough call. That’s text book Offensive PI.
20) What’s the deal with the clock management at the end of the first half?
Questions …
21) Did Quinn tweak his groin?
22) Grob had a better game didn’t he (not good, just better)?
23) Anyone see anything on the O line specifically that could have been on this list? Because I could’t rewatch it.
24) Is Quick done?
Needs (things that I think got exposed in the loss)
25) #1 WR in the draft.
26) OC.
27) Athletic FS.
So, collegiate addendum.
First, if you didn’t watch the Ole Miss-Bama game, sorry. It was brutal and violent and awesome. I’m eyeing WRs, DEs, and OCs mainly. I was curious about Laquan Treadwell coming back form that injury, but he looks special. There are some freaks at the WR position, and we love those guys. We needed a #1 this last game. Cook drops too many passes for it to be him.
I have about 8 WRs that are freaks with first round possible talent (non-freaks not on the list).
Laquan Treadwell
Michael Thomas
Bug Howard
Tyler Boyd (not our style likely, we like them big)
Duke Williams
Mike Williams
Dacory Robinson
Ricky Seals-JonesThere are more of course ..
The DEs this year are big, and I like that.
I am scoping safeties for Mcleod’s spot. Kearse on Clemson is my frontrunner … long and rangy and fast all in one. Mathews on Auburn is a Juco transfer so I need more tape on him. Tony Conner on Ole Miss is the best, but he may be a box-only.
Have not seen the OCs yet for the most part. Boehm on Mizzou and Mathews on A and M are my favorites coming in, Voltz on Wisconsin too. I think Boehm is our style personally.

Oline Not as Bad
I reviewed every play in the first half. Slow mo, multiple times each.
I found a couple of plays where the line sucked. But more blame can be placed on the skill players, IMO. Offensive line was just okay – not horrible. What we saw, under closer inspection, was Foles panicking on many plays, rolling into pressure, holding the ball, etc. Sometimes I wonder if the announcers color our judgement. They were talking about the Rams inability to protect Foles. Upon review, I didn’t really see that. Bigger problem was Foles not stepping up, running backs dropping passes and not hitting holes, and Foles not being as accurate as last week.
Here’s a quick hit of every play in the first half.
Series 1.
1. Good blocking, 1st down to Cook.
2. Good blocking, Mason picks up 5.
3. Good blocking, Mason stumbles and falls down into the back of lineman’s legs.
4. Decent blocking, Foles holds on to the ball, steps up and knocks the ball out of his own hands.Series 2.
1. Excellent blocking. Completion to Kendricks.
2. Good blocking. Mason never gets out on the screen and Foles throws it away.
3. Saffold has issues with his guy. Robinson looked good. Benny drops the pass.
4. Saffold has issues. Might have been okay but Foles rolled out toward the pressure instead of stepping up.Series 3.
1. Brown runs right by linebacker #56, who tackles Mason for 1 yard loss.
2. Nice pocket on completion to Tavon, who seems to stumble a bit.
3. 5 man rush. Robinson gets beat, but Foles could have stepped up.Series 4.
1. Decent blocking as Tavon picks up 3 yards. Should have had more.
2. Running play, Cook and Havenstein both get beat on the back side.
3. Offsides, but Foles can’t capitalize on free play.
4. Weird play where they had Cook as the lead blocker, and he gets blown up.Series 5
1. Nice pocket. Foles misfires and Cook can’t grab it.
2. Nice pocket on completion to Cook.
3. Screen to Cook blown up by blitzer. Cook should have chipped him more.
4. Right side terrible on 3rd and long.Series 6.
1. Okay blocking on Tavon sweep for 1st down.
2. Havenstein needs help and gets it from TE on long incompletion.
3. Nice blocking on short completion.
4. Nice pocket on misfire to Cook.Series 7.
1. Okay blocking. Nobody open
2. Blocking wasn’t bad. Redskins overstacked Rams right side, leaving Brown with nobody to block. Foles should have stepped up. Flushed too easy.
3. Good blocking on pointless completion to end half.September 25, 2015 at 9:34 am #31137znModeratorfrom off the net

Foles had what appeared to be a bad game against Washington. Here’s what I saw as the problem after re-watching the game. Twice.
1. His protection was not very good. He didn’t get sacked a fraction as much as he was pressured, hurried, and hit. He couldn’t get comfortable in the pocket, so his reads were taken away in an effort to get the ball out. That’s an O-line thing.
2. Drops. How many balls have to hit receivers in the hands and count as an incompletion for the QB before people realize it’s an issue on this team?
3. Defense. What the hell was that all about? A defense as vaunted as this one is supposed to be, with the luxury of having that team (WSH) on tape, should have been way more prepared to counter what they were doing in the run game. Too many issues with over-pursuit and not getting off of blocks put them in a hole and amped up the pressure on our offense.
4. Route-running (supporting cast). It kind of goes hand-in-hand with the drops issue, but I took it a step further because I’m interested in the team aspect of this team game. How much would Foles’ QB rating and YPA have improved if Austin actually ran this route with 100% effort instead of quitting halfway through it?
Answer: Quite a bit. It also could have turned the tide of the game. You couple that with the interception that Trumaine dropped deep in WSH territory, and that game could have actually been a W instead of an L.
So that’s my Foles analysis of the team and the game.
