I have tried to find out whether a 49er win over the Colts would move them above the Rams in seeding but i cant find a single site that addresses that particular issue.

But, leaving that aside, as of now :

    NFC

    1 seed. Seahawks (bye, homefield)

    2 Bears host Packers 7
    3 Eagles host 49ers 6
    4 Panthers host 5 Rams

    Bucs still in the hunt.

    AFC

    1 Denver (bye)
    2 Pats host Texans 7
    3 Jags host Bills 6
    4 Steelers host Chargers 5

Rams have 10th pick as of today

    49ers win on MNF.

Rams are now the 6th seed and would go to Philadelphia instead of Carolina.

49ers finally start playing good teams now, though. Next for them is Chicago, then Seattle.

The chance of the 9ers losing to the Bears and then beating Seattle is not zero. The 9ers will face Chicago on a short week with both Kittle and Pearsall banged up, and McCaffrey coming off a game with 27 touches.

I could easily see each of those teams losing one of the next two.

    Exciting times.

The biggest hurdle might just be Atlanta vs Rams. The Falcons are a weird team.

How the Rams can earn the No. 1 seed

Rams: Win out (at Falcons, vs. Cardinals)

49ers: Lose 1 of 2 games (vs. Bears, vs. Seahawks)
Seahawks: Lose 1 of 2 games (at Panthers, at 49ers)
Bears: Lose 1 of 2 games (at 49ers, vs. Lions)

Yeah, this is a good season. The storylines across the league have been good. Very competitive. Lots of lousy teams making a case for actually being good. Young QBs starting to click. Both NY teams still suck out loud, of course. New England is a story. Denver. Chicago. Jacksonville.

Daniel Jones resurgence. Mac Jones resurgence. The 49ers not only staying competitive, but actually threatening to take the #1 seed in the NFC in spite of their injuries. Sam Darnold’s comeback tour continues. The collapse of Philly and Kansas City. It’s been a good year.

The NFL has just got the perfect sports model. It really does.

One advantage it has over other sports is the number of regular season games. Every game matters more. Another advantage it has is that any single play can be a game-changer. No other sport offers that intensity.

    Yup.

I think the NBA would be a lot better if they cut the season down to about 50 games.

    It absolutely would.

The regular season was too long before, but now that they’ve expanded the playoffs so… like… 2/3 of the teams get in, it feels like they have an 82-game preseason. Cut the season to 50 games and go back to the previous playoff system (which still had too many teams btw). The model just isn’t good. And hockey is the same. Baseball is a little different because the “marathon” aspect of it is inherently part of its character, but seems to me 120 regular season games would fill that.

Football is just better. By a lot.

And… I was thinking the other day… football might be the USA’s best contribution to the world.

    Houston Stressans@TexansCommenter
Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison & Jack Collinsworth on who they think the best team in the AFC is:

TD: “Houston Texans. I like Houston where they’ve come. I like the way that defense is. CJ’s playing better.”

RH: “I would say NE & HOU. Houston w/ that defense is ridiculous.

JC: “I think the Texans are one of those sleeper teams right now too. Who the heck plays better defense than the Texans. Then if you get Stroud heating up.”

Now that the 49ers and Seahawks have won, I’m wondering — at this point does it even matter what the Rams do the last 2 weeks. Can they just rest their starters? Take one or both weeks as a bye? I mean they cant get the no.1 seed now, and i dont see how they could move down a seed either. Is there any advantage to winning any more games?

    As of 12/28:

    NFC
    1. Seahawks Bye

    2 Chicago 11-5 vs 7 Packers 9-6-1
    3 Eagles 11-5 vs 6 Rams 11-4
    4 49ers 12-4 vs 5 Panthers 8-8

    AFC
    1 Denver bye
    2 Pats host 7 Bills
    3 Jags host 6 Chargers
    4 Pitt hosts 5 Texans

They could pass the 9ers and go to Carolina or Tampa which would be better than Chicago or Philly.

Ok, so have i got this right — If the Seahawks beat SF, and the Rams win out, then the Rams go to Tampa-lina, and SF goes to Philly? Is that it?

But what if SF beats Seattle and the Rams win out? What then? Can the Rams pass Seattle?

I haven’t seen the scenarios fully explained, but I have seen two different articles say it is possible for the Rams to draw Tampalina. That would mean the Rams are the 5 seed which would mean that, after beating Tampalina, they would head to Seattle. Following Seattle, they would either go to Philly or host SF, presumably. Although I see I’ve left the Bears out of the discussion. I dunno.

Panthers and Buccaneers finish the regular season at 8-9. That means …

    • If the Falcons beat the Saints, the Panthers win the South.

    • If the Saints beat the Falcons, the Bucs win the South.

    Show. Your. Work.@ChadMPKirvan
As a Saints fan, I have to ask: is there any way we can make nobody win the division?

What offense/QB has played well against this elite Seattle defense?

    Rams
Baker and TB early in season.

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
Gentle nudge for MVP voters weighing a tough decision: Two weeks ago, Matthew Stafford put 457 & 3 TD on this elite Seahawks defense, without Davante Adams, in Seattle.

    Mina Kimes@minakimes
Trent Williams is out-—talked a bit on Friday about how his absence affects SF vs Seattle’s excellent, deep DL.

    Field Yates@FieldYates
The 3 points is the fewest points the 49ers have scored in any game coached by Kyle Shanahan.

Just an unbelievably dominant performance by the Seahawks defense.

    Colin Cowherd@colincowherd
There is nothing Brock Purdy could have done tonight. Seattle is too deep and athletic to beat when your roster is short handed. A Seahawk 3.5 hour flex.

    Mina Kimes@minakimes
Circling back here—Seattle didn’t play a single snap in base. All nickel/dime vs SF’s 21 personnel, and they held CMC to under 3 yds a pop.

Just a perfectly built defense for modern football.

    Brady Henderson@BradyHenderson
Per ESPN Research, the 173 yards the Seahawks held the 49ers to was SF’s fewest in any game under Kyle Shanahan, who became their coach in 2017. It was the only time since that season’s opener that they failed to top three points.

Man, the NFC West has three awfully-good coaching/personnel staffs.

When Seattle can run the ball, Darnold’s weakness is obviated, to state the obvious.

Strange, old-school game between the 49ers and Seattle. Rams put up over 500 yards in Seahawks. 49ers had 173 yards at home.

Seattle is peaking, has the bye, and home-field. And yet this is so different than last year, when the Eagles seemed like a juggernaut. Just seems like the Eagles, Bears, Rams, Seahawks and 49ers. And maybe the Packers –are all within a field-goal of each other.

Honestly, I think they should just settle it on the field.

Right now Cousins is kneeling out a Falcons 19 to 17 win.

Rams, if they win, play the Panthers.

It just appears that in the race to not take the division, the Buxx didn’t want the division more. As we know, “not wanting it more” can be a big deal in games.

    So…Panthers are stuck with it.
