New England’s regular season record
since 2001:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_England_Patriots_seasons2001 – 11-5
9-7
14-2
14-2
10-6
12-4
16-0
11-5
10-6
14-2
13-3
12-4
12-4
12-4An interesting note about the Patriots. Brady is the Pats leading passer.
But their leading Rusher? Sam Cunningham. Last played in 1982.
Their leading Receiver ? Stanley Morgan. Last played in 1989.Seems odd that their leading rusher and receiver
had no part in their glory years.w
vJanuary 19, 2015 at 8:42 pm #16890TSRFParticipantWow. Look at that those regular season records. Consistent excellence. Yes, they have lost their most recent Super Bowls, but they won a few too (as we know).
I have to tip my hat and hope they win this year so Seattle can suffer the infamous Super Bowl loser hangover. Hey, they aren’t going to be able to pay everybody, so win or lose, they will be diminished.
WV, your question about why the leading receiver and leading rusher aren’t on the Patriots now? It really comes down to how they run this Offense. EVERYBODY (except Brady) is interchangeable.
Last time they played the Colts, Gray got like 250 yrds rushing. Hasn’t been seen from since. Last week against the Ravens, they didn’t run the ball like at all in the second half. This week? Didn’t have a catch by a WR in the second half.
Like him or hate him, the big B knows how to game plan like nobody on our team…

January 20, 2015 at 8:01 am #16909WinnbradParticipantI think the Pats do the best job in the league at finding “pieces” that fit their team needs.
They seem to know when to let a guy go, and when to sign. I’m sure there are exceptions, but most of the time the Pats get it right.
Brady and Belli are as good as it gets at their jobs. Everyone else on that team can stay or go, but those two are the heart and soul.

It really is an intriguing match-up.
Best two Organizations in the NFL.
I’ll be curious to see how Brady/Belichex
attack the Seahawks D. And what will
Belichex decide to take away from the Seahawks O?
— Lynch or Wilson ?w
vJanuary 20, 2015 at 10:55 am #16921JackPMillerParticipantSo the Pats are deflating balls? There is a joke in there, so I decided not to go there.
But if they can deflate my big gut, then I’ll be OK with it.
Deflate-gate? Report: Patriots being investigated for using deflated footballs
The NFL will investigate the possibility that the New England Patriots deflated footballs during the AFC championship game, which they won 45-7 over the Indianapolis Colts, according to Bob Kravitz of WTHR.com.

FollowBreaking: A league source tells me the NFL is investigating the possibility the Patriots deflated footballs Sunday night. More to come.
12:55 AM – 19 Jan 2015It rained constantly on Sunday in Foxborough, Mass., which made gripping the ball challenging. Obviously, a less-inflated ball is easier to grip than a fully inflated one.
Bob Kravitz ✔ @bkravitz
FollowI’m told at one point the officials took a ball out of play and weighed it. Should hear more tomorrow on this subject.
12:57 AM – 19 Jan 2015The league has guidelines on how much pressure the ball must have — between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch, weighing between 14 and 15 ounces.
Kravitz says the fine could be a stiff one if the Patriots are found guilty.
There was a delay before the third-quarter-opening kickoff that might have included game officials investigating the balls the Patriots were using.
Bob Kravitz ✔ @bkravitz
FollowTold if a league investigation confirms deflated footballs it will result in lost draft picks. Stay tuned.
1:01 AM – 19 Jan 2015Bob Kravitz ✔ @bkravitz
FollowNobody is suggesting this is why the colts lost obviously. They were manhandled.
1:00 AM – 19 Jan 2015Although there hasn’t been an NFL team accused or found guilty of this recently, former USC head coach Lane Kiffin — who, coicindentally, was named the front-runner in several reports to become the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator — was accused of doing the same against Oregon in 2012 before losing his job during that season.
The Patriots have faced accusations that they’ve skirted the rules for years, and they were penalized for spying on the New York Jets during the 2007 season with the loss of a first-round draft pick and a hefty fine paid not by the team but by Bill Belichick himself.

January 20, 2015 at 11:45 am #16925WinnbradParticipantI have no idea if the Pats did this or not, but from what I have read, so far, the Pats use different balls than the colts. So if they did deflate their own, it could have been a large advantage in the passing game.
No idea if any of that is true. Just saying.
I find it hard to believe the Pats would deflate balls if it helped Brady AND Luck. But if it just helped Brady…

January 20, 2015 at 12:44 pm #16933ZooeyModeratorHow do you go about investigating a claim like that?
Too late to investigate the balls. So…you just ask them if they cheated or not?

the Colts were Deflated.I blame Belichex for that,
btw.The Seahawks are too inflated
to be deflated easily, i figure,
though.w
vJanuary 20, 2015 at 12:52 pm #16935wvParticipantCheaters prosper. Not exactly news.
Well, my own view is,
yes, they cheated, and that asterisk
will always follow them now. But, I suspect cheating in various ways
has a long, long history among lots of coaches
in the NFL.
And,
The Pats, aside from the cheating, have been
the smartest, organization in the NFL.
Belichex is the best coach in the NFL.
He just is.w
vJanuary 20, 2015 at 1:42 pm #16941snowmanParticipantThe Patriots benefit from playing in a division with Buffalo, Miami and the Jets. But yeah, they have always had a superior offensive line and play calling; technically sound defense and a good kicker. They attracted a number of high value, veteran free agents over the years because they always have a chance of going to the Super Bowl.

I am not pro QB, but anyone can throw a slightly deflated ball with more zip and farther downfield than one inflated to 13 lbs of air.

Well, i dunno. The post spygate team went 16-0. And came within a miracle throw/catch
of going 19-0 and beating the Giants to win it all.I just cant minimize that kind of excellence.
I do enjoy loathing them, though.
But i cant dismiss them as ‘cheaters.’w

No, it isn’t.
It certainly helps. But that is quite a sustained run. They retooled repeatedly and stayed competitive. They did not sink to the level of their division. So maybe there are some seasons in there where their record looks better than they were, but that is a damn impressive run.

vBut when you win…errr out score your opponent in 3 Super Bowls by 3 points vs the Rams, Panthers, and Eagles, all it takes in ONE 3rd stop in each game to make a difference in the game. If you have illegal tapes to help your defense make that 3rd down stop, you win, err outscore your opponent.
I wonder if Brady benefited from deflated football vs the Ravens last week? 1st time all year, the Raven allowed someone to throw for over 400 yards….
Check out Jerome’s thoughts on Spygate:January 20, 2015 at 9:32 pm #16971wvParticipantWell, i dunno. The post spygate team went 16-0. And came within a miracle throw/catch

Maybe the cheating helped — maybe it didnt.
We dunno.
(My own view is “probably not,” btw)But in the post-spygate years
they have been pretty damn good. And that 16-0 team
was one of THE best teams in NFL history. C’mon Joe,
it just WAS. And that was without spying.Give the Devil his due.

NFL has found that 11 of the Patriots footballs used in Sunday’s AFC title game were under-inflated by 2 lbs each, per league sources.
NFL has no comment at this time and Patriots say they will continue to cooperate with the investigation. More on SpotrsCenter.January 20, 2015 at 11:23 pm #16975joemadParticipantI heard that the 12th ball was the punter’s ball and filled with helium at 15 lbs PSI.
January 20, 2015 at 11:36 pm #16976InvaderRamModeratordidn’t make a difference? i don’t know. my guess is while they still would have had a pretty impressive record over that period of time, it could have meant a difference of one or two superbowls. possibly?
anyway. as punishment they should make them play without cleats for the superbowl. and with leather helmets.
January 20, 2015 at 11:38 pm #16977InvaderRamModeratorin other news, the rams offense was found to play with deflated balls. league sources are confused as to why the rams still couldn’t pass the ball this season.
