from 10 things you need to know from NFL Week 1

4. Rams DT Aaron Donald is beginning to put up J.J. Watt-like grades.
Donald was one of several St. Louis D-linemen who exposed that Seattle offensive line, but he was the standout with a Watt-like +10.0 grade. He is gaining a reputation for his exceptional interior pass-rushing ability (+5.5 versus Seattle), but as Monson pointed out in our podcast this week, he has also been an excellent performer against the run since entering the league in 2014. Donald was our No. 1-ranked D-tackle in 2014, with a near-even distribution in his run-defense (+15.7) and pass-rushing (+16.8) grades.
Donald isn’t far off from establishing himself as the best player from a 2014 draft class that also features Raiders OLB Khalil Mack and Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr.

Making a case for the Rams as an NFC West contender
12 Rams defensive players grade positively in Week 1, led by a potential DPOY candidate in Aaron Donald.Ryan Smith
Coming off back-to-back trips to the Super Bowl, many experts once again penciled in the Seahawks as the 2015 NFC West Champions prior to the season.
Let’s pump the brakes on that assumption — if DT Aaron Donald and the rest of the Rams’ defense plays as well as they did Week 1, St. Louis could capture its first division title since 2003.
A first-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft out of Pitt, Donald wasted no time establishing himself as one of the premier interior defensive lineman in football. As a rookie, Donald graded out as PFF’s highest-rated defensive tackle, even above the likes of perennial greats Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy. Donald ranked fifth at his respective position in both pass-rushing and run defense, a testament to how versatile of a player he truly is.
Aside from Broncos OLB DeMarcus Ware, Donald earned the highest grade of any defensive player for Week 1 (yes, even above Texans DE J.J. Watt at 9.3). He recorded two sacks, seven tackles, and seven stops — all most among interior defensive lineman.
In all, the Rams had 12 defensive players grade out positive in our PFF ranking system, with the top six all being defensive lineman. It is no surprise that Russell Wilson (+0.1 overall) had a very long and largely ineffective afternoon on Sunday.
While it’s only one week, the talent the Rams have built on their defense cannot be overlooked. Donald is already a legitimate contender for the Defensive Player of the Year Award, and the Rams’ defense makes them a serious threat to win the NFC West.

before last year’s draft i had expressed the hope that the rams could at some point pick the flat out best player in one of these drafts. didn’t matter who it was. but you just look back on that draft and think to yourself that team just nailed that pick.
i think the rams nailed that pick.

vSeptember 16, 2015 at 8:33 am #30630InvaderRamModeratori’d rather have donald. might just be a matter of personal preference but donald was graded out by pff as the best 4-3 defensive tackle in the entire league as a rookie. this year he could be even better.
September 16, 2015 at 11:10 am #30639AgamemnonParticipantNot even close. I like Bailey just as well as Mr. Glove.
43 Stedman Bailey STL WR 3 58 19.3
73 Odell Beckham NYG WR 5 44 8.8- This reply was modified 9 years, 2 months ago by Agamemnon.

Agreed. Though I don’t know much about the other guy. I only follow the Rams.
My point would be this:
An elite DT is worth almost as much as an elite QB in determining the effectiveness of the unit.
And, they are considerably rarer. The league always has a dozen or so really good QBs. But it is very, very rare to get a DT with Donald’s level of dominance.
There isn’t a high enough grade to give that draft pick.
By virtue of the absurd ...

I feel exactly the same way.
In fact back in the old days, before the 2010 draft, that’s exactly why I wanted them to draft Suh.
Now times have changed since then. I dislike Suh as a character so much now that I can’t imagine advocating him, regardless of talent. (Donald could not possibly be more different.) And as Bradford played, I developed a lot of appreciation for the strengths he had (like the comebacks).
That aside in the debates before the 2010 draft, I was just adamant that an elite DT is rare and does more to change a defense for the better than any other position.
September 16, 2015 at 1:40 pm #30650InvaderRamModeratorbut it’s not just the position he plays although i do agree that it is an important and difficult position to fill. it’s the fact that he graded out higher than anyone else at his position. as a rookie. in the entire league… and so far he looks to have actually improved. and he seems to be the type of guy who will always be looking to improve. now a lot of guys provide that lip service but i actually believe him when he says it.
i think years from now he will emerge as the crown jewel of that draft. and that was a pretty good year.
and pretty soon donald will be in the discussion of the best players in the league – not just at his position.
September 16, 2015 at 1:55 pm #30651rflParticipanthe seems to be the type of guy who will always be looking to improve.
Desire.
You know, desire OUGHT to be included when we talk about talent. People always say, “you can’t coach size, or speed, or athleticism.”
But you can’t coach desire, either. That is, you can raise a player’s intensity marginally, but you can’t put surpassing desire into an unmotivated heart.
Donald has a lot of physical talent. But he would be far less of a player if he didn’t have that rare kind of desire that always magnifies talent. Truly great players ALWAYS have that desire.
He will indeed ALWAYS play with desire and intensity, seeking excellence, pushing himself to get better and better.
Of course, everyone has a ceiling. As I wrote last year, I think he’s closer to his ceiling than 99% of 2nd year players. When you’re a rookie, that’s fantastic. Looking ahead, one has to be realistic and not expect quantum leaps when a player is already in the stratosphere. But even as he approaches his ceiling, he’ll always be pushing against it!
You know, Sam Jones, the great Boston Celtic shooting guard who played with Russel and K.C. and Hondo and Heinsohn, added a new shot to his game every year. Russell would ask him why he didn’t try to deploy the full arsenal from the beginning. But Sam wanted to be tougher to guard every year!
By virtue of the absurd ...
September 16, 2015 at 6:18 pm #30680InvaderRamModeratori think i read somewhere that waufle takes a hands off approach with donald. i’ve never read that about anyone else on the dline. pretty much lets him do his own thing. if donald needs anything he’ll approach waufle himself. to have that much trust put on him at such a young age. just wow.
as far as his ceiling. he may have a high floor, but i think his ceiling is just as high. he can get stronger. his speed and quickness are almost unmatched. he is supposed to have been advanced for his age in terms of technique, but he can hone that technique even more. he finished last year 1st overall among defensive tackles (5th in run defense and 5th in pass rushing). his goals should be 1st in run defense and 1st in pass rushing. last year he did not have a single multi-sack game all season. his first game he had 2 sacks and was so close to having 3 sacks. i expect his sack and stuff totals to both increase this season along with pressures.
on a side note. one guy who doesn’t get mentioned a lot is michael brockers. talk about a guy with a potentially high ceiling. he’s only 24 years old. aaron donald is 24 years old… only 6 months younger than brock. maybe this will be a breakout season for michael as well.
oh yeah. one more thing. quinn is only 25 years old. a mere 1 year older than aaron donald.
things seem to be coming together at just the right time…
September 16, 2015 at 7:47 pm #30691wvParticipantThis will sound weird, but A.Donald reminds me of Ali
sometimes. The power/speed combination. And the way
he sometimes just makes opposing players look like Chuck Wepner. He Floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee.

vSeptember 16, 2015 at 8:34 pm #30696InvaderRamModeratori think the best thing i can say about donald is i get emotional when i watch him play… haha!
seriously though. there are very few players i can say that about. the only player during those gsot days that would evoke that kind of emotion within me was marshall faulk. ok. london fletcher too. but that was it. not even isaac. and i loved isaac. since then i would say steven jackson would elicit a similar response.
but i gotta say. donald is stirring up some emotions in me. i’m hoping gurley will eventually do the same… hehe…
