It was my training partner’s new boyfriend. She invited him to join us for dinner last Thursday after our workout. He was a very cool guy and showed up to the restaurant in a Teddy Bruschi jersey.

When he found out I am a Rams fan he said, “I’ve been doing a lot of work on the Rams.” When I asked what, he said, “I’ve been watching film on their defense.”

He thinks that the Rams are very close to being a GREAT defense. Said all they need is another really good linebacker.

Thinks the best players on D are: R. Quinn, A. Donald, and Chris Long. Thinks the Rams can dominate offenses with these 3 up front. He also really likes T.J. McDonald, Trumaine Johnson and to a lesser degree Alec Ogletree. He thinks Janoris Jenkins is vastly overrated, citing the number of big, game changing plays he often gives up. His whiffs against Dez Bryant and Brandon Lloyd were cited.

Really likes the Cardinals defense and (strangely) Denver’s. He actually described Denver’s run defense as “historically good.”

He thinks the Rams’ offense is terrible and thinks it is definitely time to move on from Bradford. He never liked him coming out of college. Said he is just not that talented. He didn’t seem to like Austin much either, comparing him to Devin Hester in terms of receiving ability. Thought #8 overall was much too high for him.

He really used to like RGIII and Kaepernick but thinks neither will be able to return to the level that they played at two years ago. He said typically QBs who struggle in their 2nd and 3rd years don’t pan out.

Of course I asked him who wins the Superbowl and his answer was no surprise:

    The Patriots.

Well, Devin Hester has been doing well as a receiver lately, actually.

And Austin has Schotty as an OC who asks rookies to work into his offense moreso than works with their talents, so Tavon Austin’s head was swimming a bit.

Then again, Schotty’s offense is pretty difficult for WRs in general and when he left, the WRs were all too happy to see him go.

    Point taken about the D.

Disagree about why RG3 and Kaepernick aren’t panning out. Both are run first QBs who never really learned to READ DEFENSES. RG3 got hurt and he’s physically never going to be as explosive, thus not the threat he was and Kaepernick is still fast, but it’s no longer a secret that he’s only working with half the field which is a HUGE advantage for the D. Running QBs tend to be “found out” in the NFL by their 2nd or 3rd year.

Russell Wilson is still on the fence. Seattle keeps his attempts down and he’s very smart about WHEN to run and protecting himself. That said, without Lynch, that offense won’t be the same and they won’t be able to just “throw more” because that would expose Wilson.

I think the analyst is just dead wrong on Bradford.

Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
