I read an article the other day and Fassel explained that one of the reasons he picked Ficken was because he didn’t have any “mental scars”. In other words he wasn’t haunted by any missed kicks as someone like Travis Coons might be.
I thought that was interesting and probably smart in making the selection. I would guess that some kickers do indeed develop “mental scars” and despite their talent, do have trouble in games because of past mistakes. The great ones can shake it off but not all kickers can.
In Ficken, he has fresh snow, so to speak.
Now we have no idea what Ficken will do in a real game.
And when he DOES miss a kick we have no idea how he will respond.
But I think it makes sense to look at it in this way. I think that–maybe if it seems a bit unfair–it IS something worth looking at.
I don’t know but I think–I hope, it was smart.

Of course, if he fickens up this week they’ll sign another kicker for next week and so on…

vI don;t know man.
Think what you’re saying about the team this year if losing the kicker is that big a blow.
To me it really means they’re a year away.

Oh sure–you’d feel that way. Disposable kickers, huh? Just throw them away like a used diaper, huh?
What happened to your Amish roots? What happened to the value of things? What happened to taking a pair of old shoes to a cobbler? You move up north and suddenly you’re just tossing away kickers.
I hope you remember that when Ficken kicks five field goals this week.
If he misses anything, of course, they should show him the door immediately. Back to banking or trading or whatever he was doing. If he blows that first outing you can’t fix those mental scars. No coming back from that.

I don’t know. I do think that it’s cause for concern because let’s face it–they will not win every game like Seattle. It doesn’t mean they were a year away. It may mean they were just missing a valuable piece of the puzzle. A kicker is a critical piece–especially in close games. Even the greatest most dominating teams eventually rely on that last second kick at some point.
It may come in to play–it may not.
Or it may and Ficken may be great. Look at Elliott with the Eagles. That worked out pretty well.
But I don’t think it’s an overreaction to recognize that the kicker is important to the team as it moves forward.
I don’t think it means they were a year away if they lose because of a missed kick.

I would not jump to the conclusion they are a Year away ; I think they’ll be ready by the summer Solstice. Thats only 182 days away.

Get with the times, dude.
The Amish have finally embraced the consumer ethos of their English neighbors.

vAnd if the earth’s orbit shifts?
I know, I know…that would just be another “excuse.”

Injuries to the Earth have happened lots of times in the last four billion years.
The elite planets overcome those kinds of things.
