Minnesota redshirt sophomore tight end Maxx Williams declared for the NFL draft as anticipated Friday afternoon, according to the school.
Williams, the Big Ten tight end of the year and a second-team All-America pick, leaves two years of eligibility on the table to test the professional market. He finished his career with 61 catches for 986 yards and 13 touchdowns in 25 games.
“We appreciate all that Maxx and his family have done for the program,” Minnesota coach Jerry Kill said. “They are great people and we wish nothing but the best for Maxx as he begins his professional career. Maxx has been an integral part in laying the foundation for our program and has helped move our team forward.”
Williams finished his career on a high note Thursday in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl. He made seven catches for 98 yards, including a highlight-reel touchdown reception in the third quarter. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Williams is the first Gopher to leave school early for the NFL since running back Laurence Maroney was picked 21st overall in 2006.
