Mannion Taking Advantage of OTAs Opportunities
Myles Simmons
There’s been plenty said about Rams quarterbacks throughout the offseason. But one name that may not get brought up as often as it should is Sean Mannion.
A third-round pick out of Oregon State in 2015, Mannion now has a full season and offseason under his belt as a pro. While he spent nearly all of last year as a healthy inactive on the 46-man gameday roster, Mannion did complete six of his seven passes for 31 yards in the Rams’ Nov. 29 contest in Cincinnati.
Friday, however, was Mannion’s day to get first-team reps, as fellow quarterback Case Keenum had a day off for Los Angeles’ on-field drills. It was an opportunity for the Oregon State product to show off the progress he’s made since last year, and he took advantage it by making some nice throws throughout the day — particularly in a two-minute drill.
“I felt good out there,” Mannion said after practice. “It felt good to get a lot of work, and get to go with the first group. And I try to prepare every day as though I’m the starter, and I got a lot of chances today, and I feel like I did a good job. I felt prepared. I felt comfortable out there. And I thought I made the most of it.”
Part of the reason Mannion’s able to do so is because he has that year of professional experience. It’s a lot different knowing the expectations going into OTAs than trying to pick up everything on the fly as a draftee.
“When you come in as a rookie, you’re expected to learn everything so fast. And I think, for the most part, I did a good job studying and knowing the offense,” Mannion said. “It’s one thing to know it in the meeting room, but then to execute it and to not think twice about anything, just reacting out on the field — I think that takes a little bit more time and a little bit more reps.
“I think throughout the skill development phase and the first two OTAs, I’ve gotten a lot of reps,” Mannion continued. “And I feel more and more comfortable just going out there and playing. I think that’s what I did today.”
While Mannion does have a season with the Rams, there have been changes to the offense. With the unit now under coordinator Rob Boras and passing game coordinator Mike Groh, Mannion’s noticed subtle, positive differences within the scheme.
“I think when you look at it kind of from the outside looking in, it’s somewhat similar concept wise, but there’s obviously [an additional] set of details that coach Boras and coach Groh have changed,” Mannion said. “And, honestly, you’re always in the process of learning. Even at Oregon State — I was there for five years, even by my fifth year, you’re always learning something new.
“So it’s not as though you’re going to go through an offseason where there’s nothing to be learned. There’s always something to learn,” Mannion added. “But certainly with coach Boras having the offseason to look at it, coach Groh coming in — there are differences. And I think it’s been good for us. It’s been really good.”
With three quarterbacks in for OTAs, Mannion should continue to have plenty of opportunities to display how he’s adapting to those offensive tweaks. And if he continues to perform like he did on Friday, he’ll easily accomplish his stated goal of continuing to improve over the next two weeks of OTAs.
“Keep playing well, keep making good decisions with the football, be accurate,” Mannion said. “Just, really, always try to focus on the fundamentals — footwork, accuracy. Make sure I’m going through all the reads the right way. I feel like I’ve done a good job of that so far for three OTA practices. We’ve got six more left and I just want to keep building off that day by day.”

Former Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion is getting an opportunity to show what he learned during his rookie season in the NFL.
The Los Angeles Rams have three quarterbacks participating during offseason workouts and OTAs, and Mannion is enjoying the chance to display his talent in combination with the year of experience he now possesses.
“It’s one thing to know it in the meeting room, but then to execute it and to not think twice about anything, just reacting out on the field — I think that takes a little bit more time and a little bit more reps,” Mannion told therams.com.
Mannion has been sharing reps with Jared Goff, the No. 1 pick of the 2016 NFL draft and backup Case Keenum. Nick Foles has been skipping the team’s voluntary OTAs and is looking to be traded after the Rams selected Goff.
Mannion worked with the first team last Friday.
“It felt good to get a lot of work, and get to go with the first group. I try to prepare every day as though I’m the starter, and I got a lot of chances today,” Mannion said. “I feel like I did a good job. I felt prepared. I felt comfortable out there. And I thought I made the most of it.
“I’ve gotten a lot of reps. I feel more and more comfortable just going out there and playing. I think that’s what I did.”
The 6-foot-6 Mannion hardly played in 2015 after he was selected by the Rams in the third round (89th overall) of the 2015 NFL draft. He was on the healthy inactive list for most of the regular season, appearing in one game. He completed six of seven passes for 31 yards during the Rams 31-7 loss at Cincinnati Nov. 29.
Mannion’s performances were limited to work in practice during the 2015 season and don’t expect to see Mannion on the field very often during the 2016 season as well.
The Rams are grooming Goff to eventually start either at the beginning of the regular season or sometime during the season. Foles looks like he’s on the way out and Keenum is the backup to either Foles or Goff.
Regardless of his status at the position, Mannion said he will continue to work hard on improving his fundamentals.
“Keep making good decisions with the football, be accurate,” Mannion said. “Just, really, always try to focus on the fundamentals — footwork, accuracy. Make sure I’m going through all the reads the right way. I feel like I’ve done a good job of that so far for three OTA practices. We’ve got six more left and I just want to keep building off that day by day.”
June 8, 2016 at 4:27 pm #45641MackeyserModeratorIf only his work meant a damn for the Rams.
He’s purely playing for the Rams to recover a draft pick and to play for his next team.
I hope he does well wherever he ends up in a few years. He might be the backup in 2017, but there’s no chance he stays past his initial contract.
Be nice if they developed all of them in case Goff doesn’t work out (like RG3 didn’t work out, although the reasons he didn’t work out almost certainly wouldn’t apply to Goff).
Shrug. Doesn’t matter. Is what it is and it will work out or it won’t and we have a good enough defense and a stud running back that even with spectacularly bad QB play, we’ll still likely win between 6-7 games…

BORAS PLEASED WITH MANNION, KEENUM
Speaking of quarterbacks, Boras had praise for both Case Keenum and Sean Mannion — particularly the Oregon State product.
“He’s made huge strides,” Boras said of Mannion. “Physically, he’s changed his body. We’re seeing some of the foot quickness and sudden-twitch stuff that we’ve talked about. And then just, Sean’s a very smart young man. And just watching him work. So have been really pleased. And when he’s had opportunities, he’s really grasped them right now. It’s made that room really competitive.”
As for Keenum — who has been taking the first-team reps — Boras described Keenum’s leadership standing out.
“Case is trying to raise everybody’s level, and it’s got to start with himself. And he’s done a nice job with that — trying to hold himself accountable,” Boras said. “And once you can hold yourself accountable, it’s easier to hold the other people accountable.
“Those three guys have really made that room competitive,” the offensive coordinator added. “And they help each other. Even though they’re all competing for one spot, they’re working together trying to help each other.”

Sean Mannion just won't go away in the Rams QB race
Remember around, say, a week ago, when many were assuming that quarterback Sean Mannion would be in the mix as a player who the Los Angeles Rams may very well choose to part ways with?
Yeah, that doesn’t seem quite as likely anymore.
After another day of OTAs for the Rams on Tuesday, much of the talk was about how rookie QB Jared Goff struggled at times throughout the session. What many people weren’t talking about? How apparently impressive Mannion was all day long.
Fortunately, offensive coordinator Rob Boras made sure to send plenty of praise in the direction of Mannion, per Vincent Bonsignore of the Los Angeles Daily News:
While Goff may be struggling to early on in the offseason, there’s little reason to freak out just yet. Mannion may be slowly working his way up the depth chart as well, but there’s zero reason to believe that he has any chance to overtake Goff.
But Mannion supplanting Case Keenum? That may be a conversation worth having.

from that standpoint i think it does matter. don’t want to just hand it to goff.
