So I was watching a documentary on Netflix called, “Let’s Make Money”, which is an excellent documentary about how the U.S. basically rules the world with economic hit men, The World Bank, the IMF and so on and it briefly discussed the history of how, when the U.S. went off the gold standard(because other countries wanted their debt paid in gold and we didn’t have it) we went on the oil standard by convincing Saudi Arabia and the OPEC nations to sell oil in dollars, and if they did not sell in dollars we would be in trouble because we could not pay our debt.
Anyway, one economic hit man explains how we had a way of doing it–first send in the economic hit men, than–if that did not work–the jackals(assassins) and finally the military when all else fails. He contends that this is what happened in Iraq. Saddam threatened to not sell in dollars. The economic hit men went in and were unsuccessful–the jackals could not get to him and finally the military went in. The first time they destroyed his military and figured he might fall in line. He didn’t. So the second time they went in all the way. It was said often that the war was about oil but I didn’t think of it in this way before–the oil(dollars)standard–not quite the oil itself.
Anyway–interesting film.
