Each team gets $86,957 budget to sign undrafted free agents. Can spend it however they want.

Former LSU tackle and undrafted free agent La’el Collins was questioned by police in Baton Rouge, La. on Monday. The 21-year-old, however, is still not being considered a suspect in the murder investigation of his former girlfriend Brittney Mills, Baton Rouge (La.) Police said.
Collins sat with investigators for over an hour.
“There is that possibility of more questioning of Mr. Collins,” Baton Rouge Police public information officer Don Coppola said Monday per the USA Today. “No one can be ruled out until an arrest has been made.”
Mills was shot to death late last month and through his relationship with her, Collins was requested by police to give any additional details. Because of the cloud of uncertainty, Collins, once a projected first-round pick in the NFL Draft, was not selected over the weekend.
“The investigation is going to continue, and La’el is going to now start making efforts to get his football career back on track,” Collins’ attorney Jim Boren said. “He answered all the questions they had. Every question. We didn’t claim the fifth (refusal to answer a question as it may incriminate). We answered every single question. We gave them all the information they asked for, and he’s ready to get his life back.”
May 4, 2015 at 9:44 pm #24078InvaderRamModeratorWhat do you mean “based on the CBA”. What kind of limitations are we talking about here?
The league sets a limit on how much teams can spend on undrafted FAs every year. I actually think it might be less that $100,000. That means that, in year one anyway, he will have to settle for next to nothing. Of course after this year he could end up getting a big-time FA contract.
If that’s true, he may sit the year.
He may have to anyway. He may be cleared this week, and he may be cleared after everybody has been in camp a while. And maybe he will be Aaron Hernandez’s roommate this time next year.
But why work for a plumber’s salary this year, and risk an ACL?
Presumably he would be eligible for FA next year in February when all the other FA hit the market.
I just don’t think he plays this year.
his agent says he plans on signing this year. but only after his name is cleared. my guess is if he sat out a year and then signed as a free agent he’d get a lot less than if he played a couple years and then signed a contract. it’s risky yeah. but my only guess is it’s about maximizing your earning power.
May 4, 2015 at 9:46 pm #24079InvaderRamModeratoralso. i’m sure he’ll be getting taking out some insurance on his acls. just in case.

Bills HC Rex Ryan passed through Baton Rouge, La., tonight and had an unsanctioned meeting with LSU OL La’el Collins, per @mikerodak and me"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
May 4, 2015 at 11:49 pm #24092MackeyserModeratorThat’s Rex being Rex.
I dunno what unsanctioned means, but I surely hope that the Rams are in the picture.
Still, if Ryan swoops in and gets him for what amounts to a dinner… good on him.

“Breaking: I’ve been notified by representatives of OT La’el Collins that his paternity test results were negative. Specifically, Collins is not the father of Brittney Mills’ child and Collins passed A polygraph test administered by an independent investigator in connection with Mills’ case.”

Coveted OL La’el Collins – most coveted undrafted free agent in NFL history I imagine – is making his 1st visit… Dallas Cowboys up first
May 6, 2015 at 11:59 pm #24231InvaderRamModeratorit’s hard to see there being a clear cut opening for collins with the cowboys. not at the tackle spots. the only spot i could see is at the left guard spot.
it’s gonna be interesting. rams were interested in collins. they brought him in for a pre-draft visit. i don’t know how interested they were in him, but being he’s available as an undrafted free agent, you’d think the rams would at least take another look. unless have still have reservations based on the investigation.

Wow. Collins want to play for a good team.
Bystanders are stunned.
Most people thought he would go for the team with the prettiest colors, or the most loyal fan base.
Collins wants to play for a contender?
Wow.

Wow.
I think it’s more that he wants to play LOT for a contender.
That’s a much shorter list.
For example if the Rams drafted him at 10, minus of course Le Investigation Thing, it would have been as a guard or ROT.
Problem is, most contenders already have left OTs. That’s one of the reasons they’re contenders.

May 7, 2015 at 1:45 am #24244PA RamParticipantOffensive tackle La’el Collins will be making his first free-agent visit to the Cowboys , according to a league source.
The undrafted free agent is being courted by a large majority of NFL teams. He brings potential first-round production at a bargain price after teams at the draft passed over him because of concerns about his potential connection to the murder of a former female associate who was pregnant when she died.

If the Rams used a 6th/7th rdr for Collins? Chances are the Rams would be watching their 6th/7th round selection enter the 2016 NFL draft after he held out.
If drafted he could re-enter the NFL draft if he didn’t sign. The only way he couldn’t is if he were not drafted hence the UDFA deal made today.
